Noisy ring and pinion in a kombi box?

I've got a (recoed) 1800 box in my buggy, and i find the whine on the freeway quite uncomfortable.

does anyone else know what i mean?

Is there a way to damp this at all?
my baby daughter has one good ear, so taking her long distances in the car is not good for her hearing. Probably not all that good for mine either, so I've taken to wearing ear plgs when i have to go some distance.

yeah, pull it out and fix it.
mine was whining too, right before it shit itself.
fix the small prob now before it turns into a big problem. :kiss

it's only been in the car 12 months, and it was recoed before that. 🙁

go back and rip a fart out of the dude who supposedly recoed the thing ,,no way should it be screaming that bad. its not your tyres is it???

before you all get carried away, they guy who rebuilt the box is a very respected VW specialist who'd I'd trust any car I own with. He used to build drag boxes.

Also, my bro said both his kombis had whiney gearboxes on the freeway, as has every other kombi he's ever travelled in.

Added to this, the box is in a buggy, so there is no insulation to damp it down.

So take it back and discuss it with him.

Your bro has had stuffed gearboxes in his Kombi's

The preload has come off the ring&pinion or the pinion bearing is on the way out.

But, I have had them go another 100,000klm in this condition, they are tough boxes!!!

You could put some Morey's gearbox oil thickener in there to quieten it down a bit, but I would only suggest putting it in a worn gearbox.

Cheers

when you had it built did you tell hi, it was going to be for some performance use? he may have set the R&P up for strength not quiet running. being in a buggy gearbox noise would be the least of my concerns! probably best to let the guy who built it have a listen.

Yeah he knew it was going behind a Subie. In fact, he put the motor and gearbox together before we put them in the car.
