DIY-DUB ·

did they ever have one? if so where? and what year did they start from? i was questioned by queensland transport cause mine dosent have one, ive never seen a bug with one, no matter what year it was

barls ·

both my 72s have one

Early sixties to late sixties Beetles (Australian made) should have a small Volkswagen plate behind the spare wheel on the body next to the lower of the two inspection covers. It's known as an Identification Plate, but certain Transport authorities (Qld) refer to it as a compliance plate.

The plates should have the chassis number stamped on it, which must match the number on the gearbox coupling inspection cover on the tunnel. Oddly enough, not all plates had the chassis number stamped, which is handy when swapping bodies and pans. My '64 and '63 have this plate, and a 1960 which I recently used as a parts donor also had this plate. My '64 plate has no chassis number stamped.

If you need one, then find an old early bug and borrow it. Best without a chassis number, just in case you get a transport guru who knows where to cross check on the tunnel.

Yes:o

DIY-DUB ·

like ive seen plates on normal bugs, but not supers, im sayin the plate isnt there, not the whole front bit where the tyre goes, just 2 clear up if anyone is confused, anyone got a pic of where it is on a super?

ClintsBug ·

ive got a 73 super, chop top and it had no plate, in nsw as long as you keep it registered and roadworthy theres no probs ...:jesus

1303Steve ·

Hi

I think they started in 72 when the ADRs came about. Its not a big deal if you dont have one Im told. My new 1303 dosent have one and the engineer said its not anything to worry about.

Steve

DIY-DUB ·

thanks steve & clintsbug, not so worried now

carisma ·

my 71 super has one just beside hole that the bonnet latch goes in at the front.....

Bizarre ·

my 75 didnt have one and its rego was handed in in Canberra and re rego'd in NSW

No real drama but depends on the RTA at the time. I was lucky and breezed through..... but......

bugeyedbabe ·

fcb...

my standard had it behind the wheel..

super (both) at front near hood hinge...

if u dont have them...u apparently can get an engineer to make a report for compliance..and they can obtain the plate for u.

I had it done for my import...it needed to get a plate to be passed here in qld.

u should be ok, if u show them the rego papers from nsw....so it gets treated like a continued rego....

VDU.88A ·

the 71 super bug my dad had from new had a compliance plate behind spare wheel in the front

Che Castro ·

The plate that VWMA described is not the compliance plate. The compliance plate should come on all cars from '72 onwards and lists the ADR's it is meant to comply with.

VWMA Editor ·

Would this be best referred to as identification plate in VW circles?

Qld Transport refer to it as Compliance Plate when requesting identification of early Beetles.

Two years ago when I had rear seat belts fitted to the '64, the additional modification plate for the belts referenced the ID plate for verification. The business installing the belts would not do the modification without the existence of the ID plate, effectively referring to it on the forms as Compliance/Identification Plate.

I am sure and I.D plate is just that an I.D plate, this tells you when it was made and the numbers.
A compliance plate lets you know it complies with the standards.

Not sure on this.

Again, when it comes to older vehicles, I guess it's who you happen to get on the day when dealing with rego, etc.

When I went to register the Kombi in Qld, the inspector got under the car, and fumbled and mumbled for ages. When I asked him what he was looking for, he replied the engine number. I re-directed his attention to the right spot.

I guess he was half close by being at the rear of the car.

You are right, though, it is called an ID Plate.

DIY-DUB ·

thankyou ppl, i ha the rego sorted was just curious 2 know if i just made up some bull story or i was right

That's right - body build plate is simply a record for the manufacturer. The compliance plate is a second, government required plate that is proof the car 'complies' with safety and emissions requirements. Required on all cars from (I think) 1 Jan 1971. Compliance plate has chassis number on it - it is unique to the individual chassis, not just the model of car.
Could cause problems at rego and sale time if either or both aren't there... people get jailed for rebirthing etc etc

57kombi ·

On the swapping tags, I.D. or otherwise you might not get caught but if you have an accident and you are checked, NO insurance, as they didnt insure that vehicle and it is an illegal act to rebirth a vehicle, and you WILL be reported by the insurance company to the police.

I have three ID Plates from three different Beetles, spanning a total of 4 years. The plates are exactly the same. No chassis number (although there is a space for one), correct Type code for all three models, exact same weight, etc. There's no way that you would know which plate came from which car.

I wonder why Volkswagen did not stamp all the plates with the cars chassis number? This would have certainly slowed re-birthing. As it is, ID plates can seemingly be used on many different vehicles.

foxy_fuchsia ·

Once I bought my 1968 bugI realized there was no compliance plate under the spare wheel where it should be...............

MikeM ·

This is extract from the AIS (Approved Inspection Station) Code of Practice available from QLD Transport.

This is AIS info sheet 5. Found in Section 3.

The Full Info sheet can be found here:
http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinfo.nsf/index/vehicles_codeofpractice

So in summary a pre 72 vehicle does not need a compliance plate to be registered in QLD.

[Edited on 25/5/2005 by MikeM]

VWMA Editor ·

But it does need an ID Plate.

I couldn't get the VWDCQinc '64 project beetle registered without one. This was in 2004.

Qld Transport, although happy to concede that pre-72 vehicles do not always carry compliance plates unless modified, did however need an ID plate in lieu of. The info on the ID plate was used in the same way as a compliance plate in identifying the vehicle.
