The Value of a VW

Which VW, do you think, has held it's value and appeal over the years and why?

Octa ·

Thing, because of its simplicity and unique look.

Purple Martin ·

I voted early bus because it is a well-known symbol of an entire era of history, not just amongst serious dubbers: EVERYONE instantly recognises the hippy surf bus!

KG comes a close second in my book, and any beetle is a classic.

jenz58 ·

...OK the pre 57 beetle were the start of it all....split windows and ovals

I was so tempted to go for 58-67 but so biased there 😉 🙂

I guess it all boils down to how you interpret value as well??? Value for money....value in consistant performance....value as in cost to buy, or selling price, due to rarity?

ancientbugger ·

Has got to be the Ghia. It a classic right from the start, never built in such huge numbers as the beetle and was always more expensive to buy. Wish I still had one!

Starbug ·

definitely the ghia...even when people dont know it, they see one and instantly remember it forever.
the lines are sleek and retro, perfect for a cruiser or a show car, and they are only appreciating in value...

naturally, the oldskool bus comes next... everyone loves an oldskool bus.
and the beetle is just an icon. an icon of our times, an icon of design and an icon of a troubled generation, has been since the 40's. the world knows what a beetle looks like, and no doubt they will still know what one looks like in 2045..

Dasdubber ·

I felt bad for the type 4 - someone had to vote for it 😀

Seriously though I think split bus, then beetles (esp ovals), then kgs....but as stated how one interprets value and appeal will vary from individual to individual.

Obviously OFFROAD wheres all the dirt loving boys off to???

good on the road but better off!!
cheers.

Fossil ·

Would have to agree Splitty then beetle, Bay then KG

squizy ·

What a good question. I think from an appeal perspective, the 58-67 Beetle, purely from what it did for VW overall, based on how popular it became.

From a value perpective, I believe the Karmann Ghia, as they have continually pulled higher prices over a longer period. Whilst Splits are now catching up in prices, KG's over 10 years ago where still going for $15k.

VWENVY ·

I prefer the split busses myself, but Ghias have really set the standard in terms of reaching and maintaining a solid $ value! :blah

Andy ·

As far as value is concerned, for long periods not long after each group was new, their value has dropped considerably. Only those who's numbers have become low has the value risen again.
Purely on a value basis I guess T3 bus's have held their value from new till now the best I guess.
As for appeal, it would have to be the bug due to shear numbers.
BUT I love them all (air cooled that is) 😀

mscabrio ·

I would have to say the KG. To buy one even in poor condition is still a lot of money. I would love to own one but to get it to the standard which I would want would cost me far more than buying my new cabrio

Che Castro ·

I would also say KG, they never been cheap. Even if most people dont know what they are.

vw54 ·

Its Value for what you like..... as long as its a Volkswagen

I luv eum all.😎

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

im here its just the looks you get when you just whooped a 4wd's a$$ pricless

phatrat ·

splitbus...seems to be clear fav...so far

Che Castro ·

Yeah i voted split, although thinking about it. it is only in recent years that they have jumped in price. They haven't been as consistently valuable as Karmann Ghias or Karmann Kabriolet Beetles.

All dubs are valuable to me though 🙂

zac_smits ·

priceless...

PrettyBlueBug ·

I had to say KG, but there should be an 'all of the above' section! 😉
