My original plan was to drop it, Cal-look it and just have a nice little custom late notch. I have all the time in the world really, so learning to weld can happen... but on the other hand, im struggling to comprehend the amount of work involved, some may be to bad to repair...
So... let me know what you might do in the same situation. Is it repairable or just another VW destined for the heap.....
I didnt pay much for it so that side of things doesnt bother me at all...
Cheers all

Baja the thing....................lol

if you have all the time in the world to repair it, why not keep it then? you'll feel so good when you have fixed it, and be a super-welder as well!
it does look like ALOT of work though.

That is alot of rust for a late type 3, especially in the floor pan and engine bay . The front end stuff is pretty typical. You could quite easily pick up one in much better condition for very little money. The sensible answer is to strip it for every useable part, and scrap the body and pan.
On the other hand, if you want to practice welding and body repairing, why not give it a go on this one. After all, if you bugger it up or find that some areas are unrepairable, what have you lost? At least you will have learned something new. I have a fasty which features very similar ventilation up front, so I would be interested to see your progress.
My vote - at least have a go at repairing it.

Its a goner. Unless ur willing to place the whole bloody body lol. By then when u do fix up all the rust (if you decide to give it a go), there would be hardly any original body left. hmmm.
Look at the price and time consumption of the project, and think of whether it is really worth it.😎

Yep, I think she is a gonna, its a real bummer.
She has just gone too far into retirement.
Thanks all.

serious custom, i say any car that is too far gone for a real resto should (an can without any guilty conscience) be customised to the max.
Gibbo ·
Would love to buy dannys notch, but I dont have the money he wants, let alone the cost of getting it here.
Bugger

We need a drag notch...check out the latest Hot VW's mag.
I'll give you a hand Gibbo
Gibbo ·
Tis a fine idea, but not quite within my budget and certainly not the run-around I had in mind for the wife....
If anyone wants the whole car for anything, please let me know....
Cheers
BiX ·
where are you storing it?
what about a quick fix. get a dodgy road worthy, baja it and then flog it till it dies on the beach?
Hey gibbo i lowered the bug yesterday, but went a little to far, so had to spend today lifting it 🙁
Gibbo ·
hehehe, its in the garage, I did a mad tidy up yesterday, its tucked away nearly touching the oval!
Hmmm, its a real shame, she a 'cute' car as the wife says, but its too much work for me....
WABaja ·
Give us a good side on pic of the whole car with clear background in the shot and we can have a go at photoshopping it to give you some ideas...

It's dead or dying at least. Keep it though and buy type3kids notch he has. I don't think he wants much for it and it is rust free. He is in Sydney.
U2U me if you want his number
Gibbo ·
Again, the cost of getting it up here would kill me....bugger
If anyone has a really cheap late notch going or around brisbane/gold-coast/sunnycoast let me know!!
Cheers

mate I am from the UK thats a rust free solid import ;-)
some of those holes aren't even hole throughs are they
I think I have replaced 5 heater channels on 3 cars.
bottom 12 inches all round is normal ;-)
Gibbo ·
lol, im from West London, I know exactly what you mean!
😉
Brad ·
man that is not bad rust. Put it back on the road and drive it.
Gibbo ·
Its bad rust when its not a complete car.
Its basically a shell, if it was in better nick I would.
If it wasnt in such fiddly places and some structural, hmmmm
If I could find the right pieces to weld in, I might do it....
Anyone want to buy / sell me a cheap welding kit!?!
SKEWtYpe3 ·
if u want to learn how to weld and perfect your craft keep it 🙂
Coxy ·
I back Beerboy on this. I'm from Ireland and that's not rust! They're tiny rust holes so I can't understand anyone saying it's too far gone even though you can get ones with less rust. It's still a viable project.
Your car would be considered immaculate in Europe and such an easy project in comparison to some of our cars. If you want to learn how to weld, then keep it and practice as you go.
Best of luck!

or go the eighties friend in the UK, and use chicken wire, newspaper, wag, fiberglass and have done with it.
