Finally, I own my obsession!
Since having first laid eyes on this 1970 Auto Beetle a few months ago, I have wanted it. I sold my 2003 Honda CR-V Sport for this Bug, and now it's mine!
I'm soooooo happy, and it's so fun to drive! 😀

I have only been driving her for 3 days..... but if you're in sth eastern suburbs of Melb, you may have seen her!
It's been nice (but I get so embarrassed!) having people stare at it when I drive past or stop at lights. Guess I'll have to get used to it! But I'm so proud to own a bug that looks so good. I think that she was at the 2004 VWCV Day of the Volkswagen. I think that she was for sale then, I remember wanting to buy her and my spoil sport man said NO !!!!! NOT another VW!!!!! ( he is a Subaru man).

ovalTOFU: The front was as low as the back.... but the wheels rubbed on the guards so it had to be raised. 🙁 When it settles a bit, I'll see where it's sitting and hopefully (probably!) lower it again.
foxy_fuschia: What kind of Bug do you have? That paint would look really nice! I've seen a Beetle in Ringwood East area that is white, with a lilac/blue looking pearl.... definitely different! I'm not sure where the polished steel sideskirts I have came from.... but I could find out for you! 😀

My Beetle had her first service yesterday (since she's been mine, not her first service EVER!) and she is even better now! The mechanics thought she was very pretty, and engine is beautiful too..... only thing is the heater cable is broken, and I'm freeeeezing whenever I drive! LOL
How easy/hard is this to fix?? :P

I haven't had the VW wave yet. In my other car, 1974 Merc, I've just had spastic people. I've only seen 4 people with exactially the same car and they have all gone absolutely crazy, hanging out the window and the like.
I haven't got anything from them yet but I've made a couple of enquiries for parts and Volkspower seems to be a good one in Melbourne. www.volkspower.com.au you can fill in a enquiry form and both times I have they have got back to me very quickly.
Will look out for you driving around SEsubs.

they are still trading but i think they might be under BME now but they still answer the phone mr bug when i call. wonder if they still have the same staff. my old man still uses them for some of his parts

Well... I have done my first bit of work to my Bug today!
The windscreen wipers had a fair bit of surface rust on them..... so I sanded it all off, etch primed, and they'll get a nice coat of Star Silver Metallic. I'd love to know why it is that one wiper always comes off so nice and friendly-like, yet the other one is a right pain in the @#$$! 😀

I thought of the storage box for that very reason: wasted space otherwise. So I get to keep a street directory, jumper leads, etc in it. It's actually quite a decent size, and solid as! And I just HAD to have it furry..... my kicker things to put front speakers in are getting the fur treatment too. Lucky my headliner isn't too bad, else that would be furrified as well! Hahaha 😉

I am so jealous of people with pink bugs ! I so desperatly want to respray my oval HOT PINK but the boy refuses to allow that sort of thing happen to such a regal old lady. Mind you, she is currently a shocking shade of bright yellow, is low as and is so loud that you can hear her way before you can see her !
BTW. I love your parcel shelf ! Have seen a bug with a furry headliner once and it looked awesome !

4 or so weeks ago had problems with my 'lil Bug..... and to cut a long story short: engine is not reco like I was told when I bought her. Today/tomorrow she is having the other head recoed/replaced (one was done 4-5 weeks ago), and since a cylinder is cracked and leaking oil BIG time, she'll end up with new 1600 pistons and cylinders.
I can't thank my amazing bf Egeworks enough, for his help, knowledge and patience with me and my Bug when we've needed it... and his mechanic is proving to be awesome too.... so long as Gem doesn't have any other problems! j/k 😉

And my stereo is FINALLY back in the car. It stopped working all of a sudden after 2 months, so had to send it back to Kenwood. A chip was replaced, I put it back in and it still didn't work! So Eden re-did the wires nicely, and it liked that and is now working. It's soooo good to have music in my Beetle again! 😉

I haven't got around to getting an alternator as yet. I only wanted it so my stereo wouldn't die on me at traffic lights, but since having a new coil it hasn't died once! Go figure..... :P Did you just need the alternator for yours? I read somewhere about a regulator thing too, and then it just all confused me. I'd still like to get one though, but I keep finding shiny bits instead! 😁

I'm actually wanting to polish the rims she has on now. Want to get them sandblasted, then I'll make 'em shiny..... but I need a set of wheels for the interim.

I've decided against polishing my wheels, as much as I'd love to have them done. Seems either way that if they're scrubbed to buggery with thinners and wet-sanded, or if they've been sandblasted, there's just too much time involved. D'oh! 😢
So....
I have 5 days to re-paint them and make them shiny. More than enough time me thinks. 😎

I'm a bit achey now..... 4 hours of thorough wheel cleaning, scouring off grease, paint removing and then primer-ing the wheel faces.... 🥲 I ended up saturated from the hose but it was all worth it!

Yeah, not polishing anymore. I still wish I could, but it would take weeks even using all my spare time. I'll see how the new paint turns out. 🙂
Had no probs getting the dull old paint off, except my arm's sore as! :P

i bought a dremel like tool the other week from bunnings.. to polish my oil filler and alternator.. tiny little wire brush is awesome 😀

Painted them all tonight, metallic silver! I must say it's very GGRRRRR when bits of miniscule stuff land on my freshly painted wheels! Makes me wish I had a vaccuum sealed shed or something for painting.... not that I do this often enough...... but still. They're not perfect, but better than they were. 🙁

My wheels and centre caps are now all painted and clear-coated. 🙂
They get put back on my car on Saturday morning with some new front tyres.
Still not happy with how they turned out.... makes me wish I had a proper paint gun.
But oh well, they look fine from a distance and are much better than they were before!

Wow... I didn't think there'd be much of a difference with the clear coat on the wheels, but there actually is! I haven't polished them up yet, but here's a couple of pics:

I have front speaker kick panels to put in which will be done as soon as the weather is fine enough to do it.
I've got a shmick new glovebox to replace my old cardboard-looking one, which is going in this weekend.
My seats are perfect, so is all the carpet.... but PBB needs more Bling or something inside!! :P

Haven't as yet tested the cup holders..... I just liked it 'cos it filled in a rather large gap, and I have somewhere to put my mobile phone other than the ashtray. :P The console screws into the tunnel.

yes yes yes, I know semiauto's have IRS, but I realised that after I did the camber.. believe me, it would've been easier to NOT put in the camber...
Well PPB, I think you should take this path. I've taken the leberty to give you shorter 36HP rear axels and narrowed your front beam by 4.5" or so...

Not sure I like those wheels though... but they'd grow on me.
My next thing to get will be a 75amp alternator, then I'd like a narrowed adjustable front beam. Next service I'm going to get the rear lowered a tad more to even it up with the front. The torsion bars I got a while ago are so good, they didn't settle down hardly any! 😉
Then when I get the narrowed front beam, I'll get some slightly thinner tyres for the back, and she'll be lowered all round a bit more! 😀
I like the teledials too ! What about empi's ?????? Have a set of 5's for my oval and they look sweet, especially when mounted on thin rimmed whitewalls ........

the dials suit your bug perfectly anyways:P u thought about getting then shadow chromed?
a lot of new rims come out in "shadow chrome" but it's paintable.. my boss' uncle does it as he runs a custom paint buisness "racepaint" where he just finished a beetle for his daughter🙂
it looks like a brillian silver on the face of the spokes, and then a dark silver almost getting to black in the sides/shadows
would suit the dials no end 😀

i thought shadow chrome was just an darker shade of chrome, sorta like a 'iron' colour..l but yes, I agree, the Dials WOULD look good in Shadow.. do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it !

Sorry no new pics as promised, PBB decided she hadn't seen the mechanic for a while and was due for a visit... just when I wanted a pic or two of her new chromey bits!! 😂
Had to have the gear change bushing replaced, as trying to put her in reverse really tested my muscles.... I'm so glad it was something that could be fixed! My mechanic rocks. 😀

Well here's a bit more chrome on my PBB...
She loves it all!
She had to visit the mechanic on Thursday. The past few weeks I've been building my arm muscles just trying to get her into reverse gear. Not a lot of fun! It was crunchy as getting it in, so she needed to have the gear shift bush replaced as the old one was screwed.
I still can't get over how short it is to shift into gears now, and there's no huge 'jolt' when she goes into L gear. It'll take me a while to get used to I think! Shows too that it was pretty stuffed all along, but now she's perfect!! 😁

ctefeh, the 'Automatic Stickshift' badge has been on my wanted list for aaaaages, and I found a NOS one a while back. I got the measurements for it instead of being impulsive and just buying it, and I'm glad I did because it won't fit on my Bug since she has the chrome decklid vent thingies! :P

Those chomed fuel flap guards were on ebay {AUST} all the time a few months ago....
I don't know if they would fit Your fuel filler though,
as I have a 1971 fuel flap and it doesn't fit the 68 fuel flap
why VW changed the shape??? they look the same....
but don't fit... slightly different shape....
although the chrome bit may also fit Yours....
as they only go along the bottom and Up....
not all the way round.... maybe thats why....
I have got those shades over the top of the door glass but haven't fitted them yet....
I've never seen those ones near Your 1/4 windows...

So long since I've updated PBB! So long since I've actually done anything to her though... :P
Anyway, I had major probs with my old stereo, sent it back to Kenwood 3 times and finally got an answer to my non-musicness: water had got onto the motherboard and screwed it big time. I haven't had music in my car for I don't know how many months, probably close to a year 😢 but today I finally have tunes! I made a cd cover so if any yukky water decides to get inside the bonnet it will run off down the back and not get onto the motherboard of this one. I didn't even have to rewire it all as this unit uses the same connections as the old one. YAY!
Might not look too pretty but it's waterproof and should do the job! 😉

How did water get into Your stereo ??
I have collected a few of those steering wheel centres but chromed horn rings are getting rare...
but then I used a late model Beetle/type 3 steering wheel
as I've always liked them..
What do the 1/4 window chromed things do??
I have new mirrors both sides...
fitting the LH Side one was a pain though...
I have just fitted a two piece bonnet bib to My beetle...
was difficult to fit the first time...
but gives a beetle a different look....

I'm still not 100% sure where the water got into my stereo. My guess is that the black air vent/water catch-thing under the bonnet vent was the culprit. A while ago Eden and I pulled it off and apart and the 30+ year old foam had deteriorated and disintegrated, blocking the drainage holes... so water was sitting in there and sloshing around. some of it must have gotten into the stereo's motherboard. Bye bye $400! 🙁

Yep, I've found the breezies do actually serve a purpose (though I did want them 'cos I think they look cool :P). They let air in without it blasting in and without the wind noise too. I love 'em! 😁
Oh, PBB now has her little eyelids back on. Just wasn't the same without them... 😵

I'd say the water entered thru the vent in your bonnet. That's the usual culprit... ouch lesson learned there.

and the type 3 fastback....
they will be collectors items soon... maybe already...
bad luck with the air box blocking up...
I have a spare and checked them both out... and put a new hose that actually goes thru the chassis under the car, so all the water ends up under the car and not onto the front of the chassis...
the air box and all the air hoses make it difficult to get at the speedo now,,, plus all the wires etc...
My Speedo works but the kms don't go round...
so i want to pull it apart.... once i get it out of the dash...
and see whats wrong... maybe a gear from a MPH speedo will fix it....
I knew that the 1/4 window breezies would do something but never knew what....
I've still never seen them for sale anywhere...

Thanks for that Laura, I might have to look out for a pair for my beetle.
Check all the seals & stuff where the windscreen wiper shafts pass through the bodywork. These could be letting water in which will run down the mechanisms and drip onto the radion/cd player in the dash.
Pretty sure thats how water got into my CD player & trashed it.

Yes, PBB is driven EVERY day... until Retro is happening then they'll take it in turns. I doubt it if I could only drive PBB on weekends, I love her too much and she runs awesome at the moment. Not too slow either! 😉
The breezies are great... am so glad I got them as I know they're hard to come by.
And my stereo is all good now. Am pretty sure it was the airbox-thing that was the culprit when it was blocked up with 35 year old foam and the water had nowhere to go. Anyway, I covered my new stereo in waterproof stuff so it's all good. 😀
Am still in need of a job so I can spend some $$ on my two babies now.... :sandrine

Jamboree was heaps of fun on Sunday. PBB didn't win anything as there many, many cars SO much prettier than her.... but it was a great day. I loved seeing some of the cars again, and many for the first time. It's so inspiring seeing the lengths some people will go to with their cars (and displays!) and I only with PBB was more unique in that respect.
I so have to thank the dudes who organised it, you guys rock and the VeeDubs love you for it. 😁
I did snap a couple of pics of PBB, she was nice and shiny...

Please cross fingers that she's not as bad as I think she might be, and that on my weekend off some changes can take place!!

I am the proud owner of one sick PBB. 🙁
Two bearings almost gone in gearbox; leaks from push rod tubes or something (can't remember, kinda sad and worried atm); bit leaky too at rear main engine seal... plus yukky loud knocking from suspension or lack thereof without going over big bumps.
Can I cry now? 😢

My gearbox has been noisy for two years...
VERY noisy....
I do have a replacement gearbox to go in soon...
I'm just hoping the replacement gearbox is OK....
I have added a lot of Molybond type additive to My gearbox...
My engine is also leaking oil from the LHS...
I'm hoping its just an oil cooler seal...

Well, I picked up PBB today and what a difference! She feels soooo much better, and the gearbox feels so tight to change now compared to what it was. A lot quieter too! :P
Only thing is, as soon as I got home and checked the driveway underneath the engine there's a puddle of red fluid already on the ground. She's bleeding! 🙁 And there's a not-normal amount of smoke from exhaust too. Would that just be from having had major surgery? Or should I trek back to the mechanic if he's not already sick of my Bug?
***.... got off phone to mechanic, will drop by on Monday to have things checked again and also pick up the oil breather hose that was forgotten and is sitting in their workshop on the bench. No wonder my engine bay looked kind of spacious! :P
With a bit of luck PBB's mini-maybe-major transformation can begin next week! 😉

How slack am I?
PBB hasn't had her mini-transformation and due to water restrictions she is looking like a dirty little sl*t. 😂
I did manage to get some itty bitty wicked new bling for her though, which I'll put on today once I pick her up from mechanic. She'll have new gas shocks and a new steering dampener too! Can't wait to feel the difference.

Great to hear the gearbox and engine are OK again..
there's not much that cannot be fixed...
If You want your gearbox to last forever...
Synthetic oil will do the job...
its expensive , but so is a new gearbox....
I've just filled My replacement gearbox with Castrol
Syntrax 75/90 ..... its recommended for Porsches...
I've just added an electronic high energy ignition to My beetle and the difference is amazing..

so You like the gas shocks Laura...
I tried them a while back
but I had the front of My beetle adjusted too low
and the ride was hard as....
so I used oil shocks...
then when I adjusted My front end where it is now
I had to fit longer oil shocks..
and ride is great.... not too hard...

PS: Some cars have a rubber seal that sits behind the wiper arm.... not sure whether beetles had them??
anyway I have them on My 68 beetle wipers..
which have the same size shafts and nuts as the early 6 volt beetles, but the wiper arms are held on with grub screws...

they May be like the Fuel flap chrome bit...
its made small [IMHO] to fit all fuel flaps....
Yes, One thing they did do, was change the sizes of the defroster vents...
back in the 60s & 70s Laura, VW used to sell a chromed looking plastic piece that used to fit
onto the roof channel /gutter ... from one end to the other
It was a VW accessory, and the one I bought was like a checkered flag
black and chrome... many peoiple used to ask Me where I bought it from..
Never seen it again, anywhere... ever...
I should have bought boxes of the stuff....

Good shocks make a difference.
I put Type 3 torsion bars in my beetle with the Cofap shocks and things improved.
I was sceptical about putting harder shocks in cause the ride was "firm" with the new torsions.
Anyways.... i put KYB gas shocks in and what a difference.
The ride is "stiffer" but smoother. Can only say the KYBs worked really well with the upgraded shocks.
Otherwise the Cofaps were that soft they just didnt work
EIther way - driving your car with and upgraded hadling for the first couple of times is like a new toy.......enjoy

Automatic Transmission Fluid is red...
could just be a leak...
OR
in the Dual ATF engine oil pump Laura
there are two small seals that seperate the ATF
from the engine oil...
maybe these are leaking allowing ATF into your engine oil which isn;'t good...
check the engine oil dipstick..
to make sure
If the engine has been out You need to replace the Torque converter seal.... [every time IS recommended]
otherwise ATF can leak out the bottom...
