Im trying to pick a colour for my car, has to be an original colour for a 56. I am able to have a look at paint chips and paint formulas thanks to mr birchall, but it all leaves me feeling uneasy.
What we need is a spray painter to make up NEW paint chips. You know like how colorbond has their chips? Probably wouldnt be a gold mine moneywise, but sure as hell would be helpful.
The original chips have no doubt changed colour. Have they faded, yellowed or gotten dirty? The original formulas are the only hope, and that is only assuming that the tinters havent changed in the last 50 years. The only other option if I cant get samples is to paint each panel a different colour and choose from there.
I cant buy the same taubmans (house) paint I had 10 years ago. The paint I bought was blue, but the same colour name is now pink!!! Its all a bit of a bother to me.

the paint codes for different paint systems are all different
there would be no uniform colour mixing a colour in glasurit, then is spies hecker
best way to get an original colour it to find a sample of original paint on the inside of a car
then mix the paint by it's formula, and match it further to the original, unaltered sample

all paint systems have colour chips that are current and upto date. most of the vw colours can be found in them and are correct they are not faded and can be repoduced with ease in any of the colour systems out there.
i am guessing your looking at original cards from vw? the chances are they have aged but not much ... goto any bodyshop and ask to look at the colours u are intrested in, all u need is the colour codes for the ones you are chasing.
there are plenty of sites and books that will list all the codes for anyyear you want if you dont know already..

forgot to say in referance to the house paint ... car paints dont change, u will find that there mite be more than one colour to a code nowadays but you will still be able to get the original and vw dont double up on ther codes so its highly unlightly it will give you the wrong colour from the code......

The original paints (that I have the formulas for) are dulux. So you think that if I go to any paint shop they will have all the original vw colours? even pidgeon blue, manly tan etc from 1956?

I've got the same sort of problem as you, although just to see some original colour chips from 56-57 would be a great help for me. Thinking about going with Commercial blue atm.

If you're in SinCity, im sure dave will take his chips along to clubvw meeting again, just dont expect to be let out of his sight with them. Its a very extensive collection he has, only the oval ones are photocopied. On the upside, some of the oval colours continued into the 60's so you can have a look and get the basic idea of what they are.
Thats how I am semi decided on the pidgeon blue, if I can bear not doing original manly tan. Although I am a dreamer and I wont be doing this anytime soon.

A good paint shop can mix from code and then adjust to match.

Yeah dave gave me a copy of those photocopied oval colours. Someone else must have some oval colour samlpes on this forum. Even a photo will help.

I have a friend who works at PPG (Dulux) in Clayton. She said there are vaults with original spray out cards from when the colours were first incepted. As Volkswagen used Dulux paint at their Clayton Factory, their original paint cards would be kept there, as clear as the day they were invented. Unfortunatley they cannot leave the building. They are used by the lab to make sure that formula are able to cope with the change in tinters.

ok ignore the formulas u have, they will be for a dulux system that will have more than lightly been superceded ....
What you need is the colour code not the formula eg...L90D then with that code you can goto any bodyshop that has any form of paint mixing system and they will be able to bring it up on there computer to get there formula and they will have colour swatch's (cards) that will have most of the colours on them.
Now not all paint systems have the a huge range of colour swatch;s but the main ones do e.g. ppg, sikkens etc.
If you dont have the code for the colour u want then there will be a bucket load of websites and books that will give you the codes to the colours u want.
With the code u will get a match colour so there would be NO need for any paint shop to have to tint the colour to match ... if you weren't doing a full repaint then the chances are they would have to tint the colour to match as years of sun, repairs etc etc will have had an affect on the colour....
hope this makes things a little easier for ya....

When VW did deal with Nissan they continued with some VW colours.
For example VW Mellow Yellow on Kombis is same as Gympie Gold on Datsun/Nissan. I think a Beetle tan colour was also used on Datsun 1600.

We have the PPG paint formula thingy at TAFE. You can put in old VW colours and it will print out a formulation in the PPG paints to match it. Although it doesn't have all the colours though. They didn't have the aussie only colours either. You can actually call PPG on 13 24 24 to get the formula, they can fax it to you if you have the name and code of the paint
