Does anyone know where you can get roof racks that will fit over the poptop on a 1976 kombi camper? A quick look with a piece of wood and a tape measure makes me think they will by 300mm+ high.

I have two roof racks off Kombi poptop.
Will take photo and post- rainy and dull at moment.

how about bolting through kombi poptop with steel reinforcement beneath?

like mine

Thanks for the replys. I've been off the air for a week with computer problems...

Warrenm: Did you get those photos? Also do you know where the roof racks came from?

Baybuscamperkid: Thanks for the suggestion, but I want to put a canoe up there. Though having just read that story of the roof rack being ripped off maybe it isn't such a good idea!

Brad ·

if you load your pop top then it will not stay up.

Poptops can be ripped UPWARDS when driving in winds (don't ask how I know 😠 ) and a canoe fixed to roofracks fixed to the poptop will make this far more likely. So I think your original idea is the best one: get roofracks with long legs to attach to the gutter in the normal way. You can probably get some custom ones made. I'm interested to hear what you eventually do, as I might do the same on my camper!

Brad ·

I have made some that sit in the gutters and fold forward when empty to allow the roof to pop up.

If you only want a canoe on top then you can probably get away with some simple bars front and rear.

good idea brad, i had also considered makine ones that hinged sideways whed the roof lifted, but for my purposes (only thing that will be on top will be a surfboard) i recon mine will do fine. if you cut hinges onto one side of a long leggec pair of racks, then had a bolt/clip on the opposite side you could hinge it sideways when the roof was up so long as you could support it from fallign too far (easy enough to do without a canoe attached)

Sorry for delay.
Overall width is 1740- 1400 to gutters
Gutter to base of crosspiece is 285mm
