HELP: has anyone had a car engineered with CB dropped spindles? UPDATE.... still waiting

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/39721/help-has-anyone-had-a-car-engineered-with-cb-dropped-spindles-update-still

Golde60 ·

I am having some difficulty getting cetification of the cast component of my CB dropped spindles.

They are made with a cast component and spindle ('spike') iteself is chromoly, pressed in.
I need to get some strength tests confirming the cast component. I have contacted CB, and I m waiting for a reply.

If anyone has had their car engineered, I would love to hear from you, cos I may need some guidance on how else to satsify the requirements if the test results arent forthcoming.

I hope that CB can give me some after sales service, as they would have had to test the product during development stage.

BTW, I am running the dropped spindles with the wide 5 disc brake system, on a K&L beam.

any advice appreciated!

Some of CBB's customers have had their CBB made spindles engineered. I'm pretty sure they require x-raying as well as strength tests.

I am about to buy a set to replace lowered front beam. Then i shall be getting the car engineered, sounds like it is going to be fun and games. wonder if i should leave the lowered front beam in to get engineered.

I provided the engineer with the specs from the seb site, referred him to Wayne Horsfall in Ulladulla (who knows a fair bit about these things) and satisfied himself that they were a quality product, manufactured for VW. Once he knew all the info the car sailed through engineering. I do not know why any other engineers would do it any other way.

I have also heard if you get them cryogenically treated it helps in the engineering process

Golde60 ·

sorry guys - im not talking about cbb (custom bugs and buses), i have cb (cb performance) dropped spindles.

i do have a cbb narrowed beam, which i thought was gonna be a real problem for the engineer to certify.
he took one look at it however and said it was not a problem. goes to confirm that cbb's work is first class.

anyway, back to the spindles. i looked at cbb's but i could nt get these to work with a set of wide 5 disc brakes. i also looked at vvds disc setup, which werent finished at the time, but these didnt work with dropped spindles. i also looked a shermans, but i was cautious about the inconsistencies and dubious quality (not from personal experience, but i was warned off).

as you can see, i did my homework, as i wanted to spend money with an australian business if possible.

ultimately decided that a cbb narrowed beam and a cb dropped wide 5 setup was the best for my requirements at the time.

sorry to ramble on.

what i m after is data on cb dropped spindles. i know lots of people out there use them, so i d like to hear from them or possibly some engineers about how to satisfy the requirements.

i am hoping that the info from cb will be forthcoming, as i presume they would have done some testing in the product development stage.

Yep...

Brad ·

Contact Dasdubber he is getting them done on his Bug. I have had a few sets go through but that is in sunny qld

kombi_kid ·

simple just ont get m engineered 😉😉😉😉😉 i havent used any of this stuff before so am unsure i just hope you get it on the road soon!
cheers

Well I haven't heard any thing bad about any of the dropped spindles.....
and they seem to be the "proper" way to go......

Would have been better to get it registered with a normal front end..... IMHO

Golde60 ·

sorry guys, but i m a letter of the law kinda guy, especially when i have done it all properly, and i ve got nothing to hide.

not much point doing the right thing if its not insurable.

lets not go there....

barls ·

im the same kim with my bug its all or nothing in my books. good luck with it mate

Golde60 ·

just checked my emails....

...still nothing from CB.

i hope i get a reply soon, at least to confirm if it will be available.
final option will be to get an extra spindle sent out and have it tested by the engineer

i hope i dont have to go down that route, and if i do, i CERTAINLY hope that it passes the tests.

Golde60 ·

still no reply from CB after a week.

sent them off a reminder today.
hopefully that gets things moving.....

BUGBOY ·

I talk to the owner(Rick) a fair bit and will be seeing him next week in LA.
I`ll send him an email and ask for you.

Wish there were more people like you!

Big thumbs up!

57kombi ·

I second that.
Good luck and I hope you get it through.

Cheers

BUGBOY ·

Contacted CB performance and I have your answer.

The answer to your question is as follows,
The Cast part of the Spindle is Ductile Iron, the same used by Chevrolet.
It is then anealed for stress relief and for easier machining.
The Spindle pin is made from 4340 Chromoly and pressed in place using Loctite Stud and Bearing mount.
This has been a very Successful product for Me over the last 10 years and I have sold over. 10 thousand to date.
Rick

Is this what you want KIM

Nathan

Golde60 ·

Nath

YOU DA MAN

can you please forward me the email as confirmation that this is from CB and hopefully I can get it all signed off by Bill.

he will need it in writing from CB no doubt

Golde60 ·

email it to me......

THANKS

BUGBOY ·

😉

Golde60 ·

thanks mate

you got mail back

Do CBB etc., actually have a licence to manufacture or modify beams and spindles. I didn't think general mechanic or rust repair would cover it, especially if the components are not 'new' or 'original' but modified second hand?

maybe not an issue if you hit a cat, but might hit if it was something more serious?

Just a thought, stand by to correct me/

Dasdubber ·

Hey Kim, glad to see you are making some progress hopefully with the engineer. As Brad stated above I have the same spindles (using porsche pcd) but haven't gone through engineering to date. Originally I visited the engineer with my discs, caliper brackets, beam, and spindles - all before assembly. He did not request any strength testing at the time upon initial inspection so I have my fingers crossed I won't have to disassemble everything to get these things checked!

Hopefully I will be able to provide some information to him as you've obtained from CB performance to satisfy any concerns. But I guess I'll find out soon!

Alan

Golde60 ·

hasnt been ok'd as yet, cos, i havent had the chance to talk to the engineer yet.

i will keep you guys all posted.

Golde60 ·

still struggling with this.

have sent another email to CB, and big thanks to Nath who has helped no end to get me this far.

I will be happy to share the info with others who are already/want to run the CB dropped spindles.

once i get the right info from CB things should be rosy

penguin ·

Cool

as I am planning to run a narrowed and adjusted CBB beam with CB drop spindles, I am curious as well Kim. I know I am probably luckier being up here, but I want all my car certified so its covered and legal as well.
I may follow dasdubbers lead and take it all into an engineer before it gets assembled just for checking. (I am just using normal VW disc fronts at the moment but I want wide five somehow 🙂)

CBB have a full-time Fabricator on staff.

All of their parts pass with flying colours when presented to engineers.

One customer took his spindles to BHP to be x-rayed and others have had them done elsewhere and the results show they are probably better than from the factory.

VWCOOL ·

Yeah my mate's brother said he overheard a bloke in the pub say that... but is it possible to get some paperwork/proof?

Golde60 ·

has been no response from CB as yet. a bit disappointing, but hopes are still high at this stage.

Golde60 ·

UPDATE: more information is still required from CB, who have been completely non responsive to my emails up to this point in time.

Thanks to Nath for the info which he forwarded through his contact, but i m still yet to get even a confirmation that my email has been received from CB, as I need more to satisfy the engineering req's

not to pleased at this point, but i hope that CB redeem themselves next week. I will have to call them to remind (politely) them that I m still waiting.

will keep you guys posted.

damn, this is an ordeal.

i can see why people are reluctant to have their car's engineered!!

flashman ·

Kim,

I can really see how frustrating this has been for you - from your experience it is easy to see why people don't get their cars engineered. BUT the consequenses should it go pear shaped are not worth thinking about.

Sorry to state the obvious but your prob with the droped spindles stems from product base and customer support from the manufacturer, NOT THE PRODUCT ITSELF. It may be possible to circumvent the waiting game by having one of your spindles x-rayed and hardness tested. The report generated will more than satisfy ADR's depending on what the hang up is with the engineer. The drama will more than likely be not on the quality of the product but it will centre on whether or not the imported product complys

I know it is a bit different in New South but it may be a starting point if all else fails.

Godd luck with it all and don't give up.

Golde60 ·

I hope you are correct regarding the support, and not the product. I am in trouble if the product is poor too!!

I really only need verification of what materials that have been used in one component of the product, not compliances with various countries rules.

If I was to get the product tested, the x-ray/hardness test which you mentioned would not satisfy the situation, as the spindle is of a different design (ie shape) to the original and whilst it may be crack free, hard/ductile/etc enough, the shape may not satisify the strength req's.

I would need to get the product failure tested to determine it's ultimate strength.

for obvious reasons this is a path that i dont want to tread

VWCOOL ·

I would be VERY VERY suprised if you hear from CB. Many US companies don't give a f((k about some lone Aussie... they are quite happy making their $$ in the US market where the simple line on thier products: 'for off-road use only' covers thier corporate arses...

Golde60 ·

yeah, i m starting to agree. i hope that they come through and help me though.

i suppose it will go to show the difference between a company that is supporting the hobby/culture/scene and one that is primarily interested in making money

btw, the products are not marketed 'for off road use only' they are clearly sold as a roadgoing product.

time will tell with CB.....

VWFOOL ·

sorry but have you phoned them and spoken to anyone? if so, wat was the response? i dont often get emails back from these places but phone calls can make the difference....

Golde60 ·

have sent multiple emails, and i m planning on ringing them next week

i was hoping i could sort it out with emails.

what has your luck been like with them??
i hope its only a phone call away!

VWFOOL ·

im sure a phone call will b very helpful, emails cant be relied upon, i often get emails 2 months after i send them, by that time ive forgotten wat i was enquiring about. just call them b4 u get worried, cheap to call the states these days

HGFS ·

There's other companies in the US that sell CB spindles, like Serrano's, Moore Parts etc check the ads in Hot VW's. Just thought maybe if you emailed one of those guys under the pretence of buying some but ask "first can they give you any info on the construction so you can run it by your engineer to see if they're legal in Aus". I know its kind of misleading but isn't that what retailers are for??😀
I've dealt with Serrano's and he is very quick at returning emails.
Sucks that CB won't respond - you'd think they would have it all on file as a standard response.

BUGBOY ·

I just got back and while I was over I met up with the friend and owner of CB.
In the US they have different rules etc on the engineering things etc.
Also for the last few weeks they have been very busy with all the VW shows going on and this could be the reason to your email have not been reponded to.
As it turns out they are working on it as we speak.
But just to let you know these kits pass TUV in germany which is of a very high standard.

Golde60 ·

thats great news nath - i m really looking forward to getting cruising in my car.

i hope you had an awesome trip - did you get heaps of goodies for your engine?

i bet you came back with a bagfull of stuff and some boxes on the way!!

thanks heaps for following it up while you were on holidays - much appreciated.

Golde60 ·

I received a response from CB tonight, which I have forwarded onto my engineer.

At this stage there response is quite vague and frankly to date their post sales service has been disappointing.

I hope that what I have is enough to get the car through engineering, as I suspect I have got all the information that I am going to get out of CB

ruckus ·

Kim if there's anything I can do to help please let me know as I'll probably have to go through with this at some stage.

Golde60 ·

ruckus u have u2u

Golde60 ·

man i wish this was over.

might have a bit of a lead with TUV approvals done in Germany.

would be nice if I could get more info off CB.

oh well, no-one said that it was going to be easy.

at least there is still i light at the end of the tunnel. i just hope its not a train coming in the other direction.

Adam_C ·

Are the CBB ones rta certified, i thought you needed them X rayed to get them passed and it is upto the customer to do that as cbb has not? is that right matt?........

HotRodMatt ·

Adam_C wrote:Are the CBB ones rta certified, i thought you needed them X rayed to get them passed and it is upto the customer to do that as cbb has not? is that right matt?........
Several customers have had them passed. Their x-rayed ones have come up tops.

I also think there is provision for a fabricator who is certified to weld to a particular Australian Standard.

You are best to talk to them about the details.

VWFOOL ·

so are u saying the CBB spindles AREN'T RTA certified?

HotRodMatt ·

VWFOOL wrote:so are u saying the CBB spindles AREN'T RTA certified?
Like I said, ask them.

I do know that all that have been engineered have been approved.

Golde60 ·

So now i need to get the info from a German site. Anyone know any good German forums?

........or better still, does anyone know any Germans running CB dropped spindles who have the TUV certification

I cant get any joy from CB Perfromance. I have been told by Custom Speed Parts (who re-sell CB Spindles in Germany) that they will only provide a the TUV Certification if I purchase the spindles from them

I already have them here, I just want the details so that I can get the engineering Certificate.

damn this drawn out process.

Anyone know any friendly Germans??

helbus ·

I know a few guys who have gotten Holdens engineered and have had to have axles crack tested. This is on OEM stub axles, so depending on the application some engineers must want this. I would just get a crack test done and present that to the engineer.

Golde60 ·

he wants more than just the crack test

MikeM ·

Golde60 wrote:he wants more than just the crack test

Back and Sack as well? :duh

RENNWAGEN ·

U2U subaruboxer he is in germany and posts in the engine conversion forum he may be able to help.

VWFOOL ·

so hav u called them and spoken to the yet?
