couldnt help but get upset seeing that verdict today

VWFOOL ·

20 years jail

byronbus ·

If she is innocent, imagine 20 years in an indo jail...
If she is guilty, she got off light...

But yeah, she was distraught....

byronbus ·

The Bali 9 are going to get the death penalty for sure...

I thought they may set her free and kill the 9

buzzbug ·

she got 20yrs.

the bali bomber got off better than her.

can you believe that we gave 1billion dollars to such a corupt country.

gayanne ·

The Bali judges made ther money $14000!!!!!😠😠JVLRacing

HotRodMatt ·

Was there any other expected outcome?

Indonesia has a system of law where innocence must be proved and guilt is assumed. Australian's cried at the "failure" to take fingerprints, or any onus of proving guilt but that is their system. You have to prove your innocence against any claim.

I have never needed to avoid any desire to visit Bali it simply doesn't appeal to me. Now that Australian's have seen that legal systems where the onus of proof is on the defence rather than the prosecution maybe they will realise that some countries simply shouldn't be supported.

Byron, absolutely right... if she did it she got off bloody lightly.

VWFOOL ·

20 years in jail?? thats lie spending my whole life that i can remember behind bars in a foreign country. fuck that

buzzbug ·

Well said HRMatt,

I went to Bali as a 15yr old.
Had a run in with the local law enforcment and needless to say.
I never want to go back.

Brad ·

I am sure a lot of people will steer clear of Bali as a holdiday location ... Go for a holiday stay for 20 years and pay $14 000 for the plesure .......

In order for them to be corrupt there would need to be non corrupt people to accuse them and that is never going to happen over there. Maybe she can build a bomb and they will let her out after 5..... that is only if shes kills unrelated people and changes religion...

What a crock of ^%&^%&^ at least the judge keeps his track record or no non guilty verdicts in drug cases regardless of the evidence.

bajachris88 ·

20 years, shit. I said a little prayer for her, but i reckon the case isn't over yet. One way or another, she will somehow get out before the 20years.

Anyways, in a 20 year sentence in a crap hole prison, her health will so degrade she would most likely die before the sentence is over. Man, the amount of Tourism and relief and help we provide their country, and this is how they thank us?

They are very corrupt. Who knows? she may be guilty, but from the evidence that has been brought forward (from what the media says), there seems to be insufficient evidence to accuse either way.

My suggestion is that we get the Australian government involved in boycotting tourism to their country and by refusing to give relief work/funds to assist in their country until a real, fair case is brought forward.

I was watching the case on channel 7 during lunch period in the science labs with 3 other blokes, sipping white tea with sugar and eating monte' carlos that my teacher Mr. Little gave us. It was very sad and emotional. Especially when the tears started falling. But the situation is far from over, someone has to jump in and stand up for fairness. With people power and strong opinions, we can put that pressure upon our government to do so. We just need to work as a group and really push them.

There is a lot of talk, and its only talk, about her background and family, it is possible she is guilty...

Hopefully flights will get cheaper to Bali with all you guys boycotting, sweet, cheap surf trip...

I'll go back, great people and great surf...just wont take drugs with me, and will lock my bag...

I thought that they would keep Australia on side by setting her free and issuing the death penalty to the other 9 idiots...they look good and they get justice.

Anyway, lets not be too harsh on the Balinese, its still a beautiful place, and ther are many beautiful people there...

koolkarmakombi ·

did any1 really expect a different outcome?

She is unlucky, but there are many others in countries around the world who dont get the attention she has, and are arguing innocence just as loudly.

Aid does not buy a legal system.

Indo is still pissed about East Timor, what do they care about some aussie tourist. We have dozens of Indo fishermen in jail who leave families unsustained- think those families give a shit about her?

It doesnt just happen in Bali, think our legal system is much better?

I really really feel for her.

Personally, I would top myself.

Well you know the media. They are a buisness, and only do things for money and television dominence.

Hence why all the good news in today's society is hardly reported on, as the bad news gets far more attention and popularity in today's society.

Like on one of the 007 movies with that media guru, "There is no news, like bad news".

Don't traffic Drug's

Dannyboy ·

As it has been said , when in another country it's a different matter. Different laws , lots of backhanders etc. Years ago i got thrown in Jail when i was in Spain after i got pulled into a huge fight.

It was nothing big really and i didnt start anything but try explaining that to someone with a gun and a big stick who doesnt speak English and hates tourists!

They thought nothing of pushing you about and treating you like utter crap , just glad the holiday rep came to to my aid and smoothed it out.

I did 1 night , imagine 20 years OMG!

Guilty or not you wouldnt want to wish that on anyone

Dan:o

i feel for her BUT she did get off lightly its a crock of shit her whole story and with the odds that the judge has had 500 cases for dru trafficing and not ONE person has been let off!!! with odds like that i put a bet on down at the TAB and scored myself a good night out!!!
i dont think it has anything to do with the indonesians suck shit and a lesson learned about trying to make money out of drug trafficing!!

I agree if you knowingly trafic (bali 9) you deserve to rot in hell.

But being an unsuspecting tourist (not saying she was), a victim of some halfwit bagage handler who missed his bag of grass stashed in your bag.
Thats just not right.

lee.

ancientbugger ·

I've got to have my say here. A body board weighs what a kilo? A kilo and half? How do you not know somethings not quite right when with FOUR and a half kilos of drugs in the bag it's around 6 kilos!!! Plus as someone has already said she's pretty, does ugly corner the market on drug smuggling?! I know one thing on my travels around I've been pulled out and searched more so when I've been in suit and tie than when I've been casual and now I've read what I've just written I've no idea what the relevance of the last remark actually is??

Turbo54 ·

The heading of this topic ' tears for schapelle', I think she cried enough in the last 6 months for all of us. Anyone who has been and experienced the Indonesian way would of expected nothing less, it may suck but thats the way it is in there country.

suckes up to them.

emma31 ·

she has been to Bali a number of times she would have known that these things happen. where was the lock on the boogie board? Isn't it common sense when travelling to overseas countries to lock up your bags?
Saying that I do feel sorry for her and that fact that the sentence does not reflect that of there own people who can kill numerous people in a bombing and get the equivilent of a smack on the hand no justice there no matter how much you rationalise it.

frenzix ·

it was pretty conveniant that the person who planted the pot knew to take a bag of pot that could fit into a bodyboard bag... it was the perfect shape for the bb bag .. shitload of stash too.. not just coincidence.. on the other hand i don't think she deserves 20 years, just a couple of months in a bali jail wuold be enough, then send her home.. i bet she wouldn't do it again.

kombi_kid ·

i know from experience (drug dealer) that 4.5kgs of marijuana is a hell of alot and if it was placed in her bag conviently then the guy that put it in there must take a bodyboard to work!! ahahahaha doubt it

waltermitty ·

The judge in her case has had 500 trials ever one with a guilty verdict!!
( true it was mentioned on radio national) What justice is that?
M

bus914 ·

When you’ve traveled a bit, it’s not difficult to imagine yourself in her situation. If she is telling the truth, then it’s a very sad story indeed. I’ve had my baggage tempered with, i.e. the lock ripped off, somewhere between London – Bangkok - Sydney.

How do you know she is innocent??? I'm not suggesting she is guilty as she dosn't look that stupid....but like the judge said...you have not proved that it was not yours. Simple. When the appeal is heard they can add their own evidence to prove it was not her stash then she will be set free. If she can't prove it was not hers then she is in the shit...big time. Why should we stop aid??? I'm sure if the tables were turned and it was a Balinese person caught in Australia you would have no sympathy...and possibly not believe the story they were telling. It's all judgement by media. They found a "poor Aussie girl" and jumped on her side straight away and without knowing all the facts, set out to make her the victim and it worked. Ratings went up. I hope if she didn't do it she gets home quickly. If she did do it she should rot.

sax ·

I accept all major credit cards (and also some of what Schapelle was carrying)

Flying VW ·

I think her Mother needs a good Slapping.
She carries on like the Australian Government put the Drugs in her bag.

The Drugs weighed 3 times more than the Boogie board, so how could she not know they were there?.

bajachris88 ·

Well, when you think about it, if she did really traffic drugs, then she should go to prison for quiet a while. Imagine the number of lives that would be ruined by the marajiuana from the smoker's addictions. Such drugs can easily cause death etc. etc.

Hence why sentences towards these drug dealers are quiet high, cause like the bali bomber, a drug trafficer could kill and destroy many lives from the drug dealing.

Come to think of it, from what we have seen on the news, it has been SUPA DUPALY BIASED. I have not seen any reports at all (from memory) from the prosecution side and their opinion, only from Corby's.

Hence why many are thinking that she is innocent.

hmm, the media is a very powerful buisness. Control the media, control the mind. And control the public's opinions and views. VERY POWERFUL.

[Edited on 27/5/2005 by mynameischris88]

bugeyedbabe ·

ok...if u were listening to much of todays reports, and previous ones, the first thing u would know is todays outcome was expected...a given. the chief justice has never let anyone off, and corbys lawyers based their arguments on emotions, not legal facts. What they presented in most case was hearsay. The pros. team had facts. Her BB bag had drugs. plain and simple.

Having said that, some importnat things that her team shoudl have presented, but didnt were

1. Her father packed the bag and loaded/unloaded it onto the belt. She did not touch it at any point from hom to airport.
2. Her brother picked it up from other end, and put it onto table. Not Corby.

but for some reason they did not ask the father or brother to make statements. I guess they felt that the family woudl be seen to be lying for her, or perhaps it placed them at risk.

Also, no lock was on the bag. i only travel around country, and I always lock my bag. If i were to travel overseas, I's be gladwrapping the damn thing. Maybe it looks silly, but it means its not my bag their tampering with.

As for the size of the bag, heaps of ppl travel with them. I know, I've picked Big A up from the airport enuf (especially with delays) and watched tehm load/unload planes. So it would have been just a matter of waiting for one to come thru.

And, at this point, it was known that the verdict had to be guilty. ALso a given that the high courts, and supreme court will say guilty. Unless new evidence is bought forward.

However, when the appeals process had been exhausted, then she can apply for a presidents pardon.

I bet that is where she will be sent home (if not thru the prisoner exchange) She will most likely be asked to pay a fine, pardoned, and sent home, never to return.

Why, the court system is legally based The president does not need to rely soley of legalities. he can bring into account other matters, such as 'likelyhood'.

And if u think our system is fool proof, compared to theirs......what about lindy chamberlain? Whether u like it or not, when everything was presented, the picture of gulity wasn't as clear cut as originally presented

And I know of other cases where innocent ppl have been accussed wrongly, because corrupt officers have a 'gut instinct' and make statements fit for a guilty verdict.

In fact, I know of a district DOCS office, where the whole a intake team was dismantled, and every case they have handled for 12 months is being reviewed, because they were considered 'gun hoe' Since then 90% of their cases have been overturned, because reviews suggested most parties were innocent. 90% people. That is HUGE problem. The office is considered one of the worst in QLD, and in AUST.

These ppl pushed cases before court.....based on falsified information, and had children removed. Families broken up. Wives leaving husbands. For what?? Because an officer said so

So is our system better???

Might be me, but i learnt aust court system is not always better. Just different.

Grey 57 ·

Matt is sooo right about the media. I feel real sad for her. I think the media have turned the thing into a circus. The live thing today left me really cold. Bit like the new millenuim version of a 16th centry pubic hanging. Bit goulish. They have had the spot light right on her and the verdict was always going to be what it was.
But what about the other approx 150 aussies sitting awaiting trial or worse in Indo jails.

yeah well what can you do

now how am i gunna lock my mal up when i head to the southern swells in june?

Hutcho ·

Bali AND Australia failed Corby, whether she is innocent or guilty. She was either VERY stupid or thought she was VERY smart. I, being an Australian, will give her the benefit of the doubt in this case as the evidence against her was ZERO! I actually feel quite disillusioned now because I thought that we Australians were humane, diplomatic and rational. We embrace all religions without prejudice, we fight to release immigrated detainees, we dont even like to see whales killed for gods sake and we help ANY country that needs it.
I dont remember ever seeing a court case in Australia where we clapped and cheered for someone who is sentenced for life, because thats what 20 years is, to live like an animal when evidence against them was nought. The Balinese authorities handled this situation VERY badly and as such, it should have been thrown out of court. One of the Bali Bombers received 2.5 yrs?? Whats the go with that??
....mental note to self; never go to Bali.......

Boozer ·

I haven't been to Bali since the bombings and all this but I remember it being an awesome place with very friendly people. I can't say whether she is guilty or innocent, and it must be the amateur historian in me but I don't see the point in running around saying "she's innocent! innocent!" or vise versa. This is because none of us have the full story, know all the facts and evidence to make a proper decision/opinion on whether she is or is not guilty. The media won't tell us the truth, just look at my thread about the body in the roof to see that. It is also unfair to expect the government to interfere in another country's affairs and legal system- no matter how corrupt it SEEMS to us. Imagine if it was the US trying to interfere with out legal system, we'd get shitty about it. Sure the govt can help out, but they can't just pluck her out of there, as many would like.

It is a diffucult and problematic issue and I truly feel sorry for her and her family if she is innocent.

I don't give a shit about the media or what anyone else thinks I think she is innocent and I think it is horrible she got a 20 year sentance. She must be thinking her young life is over now, it's very sad. I don't like John Howard very much and he has been sitting on his backside quite a bit but he has to be careful the this situation if you think about it. If he got mad and started slagging off Bali then he would have no 'bargaining power' with the president of Bali.

foxy_fuchsia ·

Just one more thing, I am never ever ever ever going to Bali in my life!! I just feel sorry for the people that live there

[Edited on 27-5-2005 by foxy_fuchsia]

Untermensch ·

As are all Australians, I've been watching the Corby case with great
interest.
I'm unable to come to a conclusive decision, but on the evidence I've
witnessed, mainly from the extreme close ups of her face, there is
irrefutable evidence she plucks her eyebrows.
Perhaps this is because she is a beautician, and just enjoys practicing
her trade on herself. I hope the venerable Indonesian judges have had a
chance to closely examine other evidence as to whether or not, Schapelle
is in fact hairy, or not hairy.

Failing a successful appeal, I urge all Australians to assist in keeping her
well supplied with razors, wax and depilatory creams for the duration of her
incarceration

frenzix ·

"evidence against her was ZERO!"

Yeah no evidence.... just that they found the pot in her bag!!

Who is going to risk 4-5 kg of pot in someone elses bag?! she took it, she'd done it before and not thought of the consequences, i feel sorry for her cause of how silly she was, and now she's gonna rot in prison. I think they should do this prisoner exchange thing, then have a reality TV show based on her life in prison.

HotRodMatt ·

Innocent or not, I have doubts, the evidence has not had to be proven.

With a legal system that at least pretends to be fair it must be proved beyond reasonable doubt that the items were hers. The case would not have lasted in any country with a half reputable legal system.

We miss a lot of guilty people here, but that is the risk with a system that puts the onus on the prosecution to PROVE its allegations. You can prove that something belongs to someone in most cases, but it is impossible to prove it does not belong to you!

bajachris88 ·

By the sound of it, no one really knows what was going on with her and Bali. No one really knows (the public that is) that she is guilty or innocent.

Its going to be a while before the full story flopps its fat ass over the media. We won't really know till some author publishes a book or something about the incident. You can't trust the media to provide 'full coverage' and the complete story.

Dam if we know. But it is sad to see a 27 year old get 20yrs in prison. I haven't even lived that long and i see that as quite a while. She won't get out till she is 47!!!! By then, her life would be starting to deteriorate with old age, and her mental state would be so degraded.

Yeah, the bali 9 are dick heads, corby? well i dunno. And the bali bomber getting only 2.5 yrs, well thats rediculous. If thats the case, corby should try to escape and blow up the prison, cause if she gets caught again for killing all the guards and running, it would only be around 2.5 years extra (like the bomber). But it would be pretty hard with prison security and all. oh well.

Life sux.

But i have a question for all of you. Do you really believe a 20 year sentence would be a decent length sentence for her to learn her lesson? Don't you think its a bit excessive? 2 to 3 years would be enough hardship in their crap hole prisons to learn a lesson, but 20, Shit.

waltermitty ·

If Scapel was a 20 year old Aussie of midle eastern decent would anyone be interested? I think not, call me cynical but all this attension is largely due to the fact thet she is attractive young and femle. Mitchell

The whole thing has been blown out of proportion by the press, If she wasnt so photogenic we would have had a few lines about it in a Sunday paper and thet would have been all we heard.
Do you think this phone bloke, Crazy John would have offered his help if she didnt make good press, I doubt it.
I dont see him trying to help the Bali 9's lezzer.

Do the crime, pay the time.
I know this has been mentioned before and I dont really believe the press but a fact that is true is that her father has 2 convictions for drug dealing,
I will leave you with that thought.

Cheers

not visiting bali will make shit all difference, it is even more ridiculous when it is for one person (of about 100 australians who are detained overseas for drug charges) who hasn't even proven her innocence.

A couple of things... Bali is not a Muslim country, but most of the rest of Indonesia is. I've been there 4 times (and just 6 months ago) and the people are beautiful loving people when you get to know them, but I was offered dope by a cop in uniform. It's corrupt, and their justice system is corrupt... hang on, so is ours... But you would have to be cautious going into a country where you are assumed guilty until proven innocent. Whether she is guilty or not isn't known (I don't think she is), but being locked upfor 20 years in ANY country for having 4kgs of a relatively harmless plant is ludicrous, and I've never smoked the stuff so I'm not exactly pro dope. I feel as though I would be playing Russian Roulette if i keep going there. It now seems too risky. Then again, maybe it's just fear hyped up from all the media coverage. My2c worth. Also as an aside, i realise that many here bag the shit out of mynameischris, but he's just a kid... give him a break for God's sake.

I reckon no one in the public at all would be able to fully justify her guilt or innocence. Who are we to judge? We have never met her, never seen her, never talked to her, never met her, never heard the decent full story on the news. (well, there may be atleast one lucky person who may have)

The thing that bloody annoys me the most is that the bali bommers get sooo little time, and she got 20 bloody years,, where's the justice??

Starbug ·

its a well known fact in todays litiginous society, its the criminals who get the least time...
this is because they know their 'rights' and the little loopholes in their countries outdated laws...

yes, it pisses me off that someone who may or may not have knowingly carried a large amount of a pretty harmless plant into another country gets 20 years, and some people who blew up a building as a terrorist maneouvre get 2.5 years... but thats because the bad guys know the law and how to make it work for them, and the little guys get screwed.

I'm sorry if I sound rude, but that is a very childish and close-minded view of the situation and Bali as a country. Do some research.

77bay ·

Why would you try and take something in to their country which is so readily available there anyway? Last time I was there I could have bought from nearly every 5th or 6th hawker in Kuta. Either way the should give her the drugs now because she's going to need them to make the 20 years go easier. Unfortunate for her that 20 years over there MEANS 20 years, not like the spineless jellyback system over here. What if the appeal goes the other way and she gets life or even the death penalty? As far as I'm concerned, all traffickers/pedophilles/murderers deserve death, not a warm room and 3 hot meals a day at my expense. If she's innocent karma will come around, it will just take time.

Untermensch ·

77 bay, I asked this question myself. It's like bringing oil to Arabia right?

Wrong. Apparently quality aussie dope is highly prized over there and is better than the shit hash the balinese locals are flogging.
Also, it's hard for westerners to score a smoke over there without fear of a setup or even being sold gear by dodgy cops.

There is an amount of aussie gear getting smuggled in for westerners in bali who want a decent chuff without the massive risks. Would you not trust a fellow aussie more over there?

Quite correct and most of it is sold out of tourist resorts. And guess who's sister works in one?

yours?

After reading everyone's posts - here's my 2 cents.....

Firstly I have no idea if she is innocent or guilty. i believe she is innocent for the most part - but have a niggling doubt that makes me not sure....

Anyway, I too thought it was strange that the bag of dope fitted perfectly inside a boogie board bag - but after more thought, realise that it is also "suitcase" size - so perhaps Mr baggage handler (??) was waiting for an unlocked suitcase to come along but boogey board bag came first?? Lot's of people take half empty suitcases over. (Still doesn't account for how mr baggage handler carried it to work and stashed it waiting for the right bag!!)

I always lock my bags when travelling, but I stupidly thought it was to avoid things being stolen - not so people could plant shit in your bags. So I never would have locked my boogey board bag coz I would have thought that if it was to be stolen, they would just take the whole thing. (Who locked their bags in fear of things put in as opposed to coming out?)

And finally, does her sister work over there, coz I am hearing conflicting evidence that her sister does not live over there at all so am interested to know about that.

I don't think you can ask for aid back or stop giving aid - they are too different things - aid is humanitarian, for the people (not for the government). People in power in Indonesia may well be corrupt - the lot of 'em - but the people are lovely (and don't feel sorry for them living here - they probably feel sorry for us living here under Howards regime - lol). But they mostly struggle to earn every $$, and for the most part it will be the people that you are hurting if you boycott Bali, you would have to hurt a lot of people before it started affecting the government.

CB Hotdog ·

oops - a long one, sorry....

Southern Van ·

legalize everything then you dont have to kill anyone or lock anyone away.If you want heroin go to the doctor and get it.Cheaper for the taxpayer.Next to no crime in the suburbs, and you can monitor the dope heads. (just a thought)

frenzix ·

i agree

Starbug ·

southern van is totally right... decriminalise everything and you wont need to worry about this sort of stuff.

after all, in the end its your choice what you put in your body.

frenzix ·

oh! i was thinking along the lines of, the govt. providing legal hard drugs/party drugs and craftily overdosing the users.

frenzix ·

problem solved

bajachris88 ·

actually, if you let drugs be legally distributed in Australia, it would be more benefitable to those who take em'. Cause then the drug trafficers don't have to worry about putting dangerous chemicals and God knows what into it to try to hide it from sniffer dogs and crap. That won't have to worry, therefore the customers who use it aren't poisoned by those chemicals.

I think i read somewhere or heard somewhere that it is rarely the drug that kills the person who takes it, rather, its the chemicals inside that the drug dealers put in that screws u up.

And its more money and jobs, lol. The farmers would be clearing their fields in way for the drug crops, and would make a fortune out of it. Only trouble is exports, cause not many countries would have it legalised (i would think).

Your right, its the persons responsibility what they take and put into their bodies. As long as the smokers aren't around for me to smell it and cop with their secondary smoke everywhere, i have no problem with it.

Alcohol is a drug, and its widely used all over australia. It can kill in harmful doses and can screw u up a bit (drunk and all). Whats the difference between that and these other smokable and injectible drugs? (Addiction i spose, but yeah)

You have to honestly say, this is quiet a good debate. Its very informative and interesting.🙂

Boozer you are entitle to your opinion just as I am but am not being immature. I have no interest in going Bali and deffinately not now! My sister went over and loved it even though she had people coming up to her trying to sell her pot (and they could see cops waiting around the corner to bust them!!) Such a set up and quite a corrupt country I think. But that is no reflection on the people that live there, everyone I have talked to including my sis said what lovely people they are. So, Boozer, it's not immature of me that is just what I think, and I still don't want to go to Bali!! And just because I don't want to go there doesn't make me close minded at all. Maybe you should open your mind and realise people can have different opinions! Sorry if I sound rude at all 😉

Also, just wanted to say that I think it's great that on avd we can now have civil discussions without being horrible to each other!

That toast would be all mouldy by the time anyone buys it. I wonder what the judges would say if the persecutors did present that up as evidence. lol

allowed to do what they like!

stick what you like into your body but then be responsable for your actions-to many claim it as an excuse and expect sympathy .
The people who abuse other people's right's to live without harrassment or death by those who expect sympathy deserve all they get

But foxy you are immature! only 21 yo, how can you expect to have and or make mature comments,
Bali is great! they put drug dealers in jail, wheres the problem with that?

fetid_swamp ·

the balinese aint the issue. its the javanese. any bali boycott will mainly hurt the balinese. the guy offering green on the streets in bali most likley aint a rounder faced balinese & nor is the cop waiting round the corner.

the prob with aussie & indo is in the minds of the hardcore javanese and the right wing aussies. ask the east timorese or the sulowaseans or the west papuans what they think.

who was responsible for creating indo by amalgamating army ants with tweedle bugs?? this was a bad move.

I realise you have your own opinion and that's fine with me, it's just that it came across as if you had made your mind up on the place/situation without much information. Australia is quite a corrupt country, it's just not a open and visable as others. Just like the gun control issue, if they want it they can get it. I don't think you should just write off bali as a holiday destination, it's a really awesome place- but I want to go to Singapore before Bali again.

Marrs_7 ·

If she didnt do it, man that would make you want to top yourself huh? Could you imagine how that would feel! you'd be so damn pissed!

If she did do it. Well what can I say... she knew the concequences, she took that risk.

foxy_fuchsia ·

I am actually 22 silver, and I am very mature for age. I never said Bali wasn't great I am sure it is! And I have no problem with them putting drug dealers in jail, they know the laws over there (or they are just stupid if they don't). But I am saying I don't believe Shapelle Corby is guilty, that's just my opinion though. And I think every country is quite corrupt in there own way.

I might go to Bali once day, like I said my sister loved it. I really had no interest in it before and the main reason I have been thrown off going there now is because I would be freaked if someone planted drugs on me. I do however think it's immature to say let's not give the Bali people aid anymore.

~air fooled~ ·

drugs... my problem with legalising these substances is the increased availability...prescribed or not...

you can argue all you want about the user being responsible for their own actions, however what happens when they get behind the wheel? when the tripper ploughs into the oncoming sedan full of happy happy joy joy family singing 'wheels on the bus' with little jimmy leading the chorus? how do you justify the legality of it all then? what about if the family tarago manages to avoid the head on and a few days later at school little jimmy buys some coke off his school friend who snuck a bit from his dads stash? is it ok to have children o.ding? i could go on and on, its a myriad of facts and what ifs and my opposition could always got on about alcohol or whatever, but the fact is not everyone is responsible with drugs. legalising it will only make it more accessible...

how many people pro drugs legilisation here have experienced the bad side of drugs? who have friends and family addicted to drugs and seen them run their life into the ground? see babies being born with addictions? seen the way they live amongst filth and squalor?

maybe you wouldnt be so keen to legalise it all if you saw how it affects everyone, not just yourself.... im not saying there isnt responsible users here, im sayin look at the broader picture...

sorry for the hijack...

bajachris88 ·

i reckon foxy is cool.

DOUBLECAB ·

Hi Guys........... just a thought but have U noticed that whenever a aussie is intercepted for a breach of the law in a foreign country they always claim innocence and that the law in that country is corrupt.............even the 9 caught in Bali with the drugs strapped to their bodies claimed they were not aware of the consequences.... and were "conned/coerced" into it by "the mastermind" even though their passports show they were not once a year tourists.

Have U also noticed that we in this country have been bitching that OUR legal system is too lenient on the law breakers yet when one of "our" is dealt with more than local leniency some people find it hard to stomach!

DOUBLECAB:duh

bajachris88 ·

yes, indupitably good fellow. (in a very 1920s high pitch man English accent)

On a serious note, I agree. But we need a mix of inbetween high penalties and low penalties. They are a bit extreme over there, and we are quite lenient over here. We need a middle standard. In otherwords, Australia needs to become more strict, but not up to the level of the Indonesian government.

Really, who am i to say, among the rest of us. I don't think there are many people here in legal occupational positions that would have the honest, up-front experience and true perspective of the international justice systems without relying on the media to say there side of the story.

Who here from a legal background can comment here from there up front experiences and observations? Just be interesting to see their position in this debate.😉

its not theoretical its every day

i have kids you have kids or one day you will
my kids are safe & well i believe they will grow up happy & healthy
ive seen addiction so have some of you drugs alcohol what ever (think)

rustybug ·

GOOD, i say..... if only Australian laws were as tough! there would be alot less bottom dwelling scum sucker drugo`s hanging about, stealing from us, our homes, our vw`s i think we should all be disgusted that a herion importer in our country only gets 5 years. a child molesterer gets a suspended sentence and a murderer only gets a few years!
Death to all Drug trafickers, rapists murderers and kiddy fiddlers i say.
We need more hard justice!

foxy_fuchsia ·

Thanks Chris! 😉

foxy_fuchsia ·

I don't think it's right to give the death penalty, only because it means they are getting off too easy!

pete wood ·

The problem is this....

If we are wronged by someone else, we want hard justice for the criminal.

However, if we wrong someone ourselves, we expect that the courts should be merciful and let us off.

You can't have it both ways. The Indos are keen to prove this. They are sending a message, 'If you are caught bringing drugs into our country you will be punished, and punished harshly'.

Now, how would you feel if you found out that some indonesian woman brought 4kgs of Heroin into OZ to get 16 yo girls addicted to the point that they sell their bodies to get a hit? Coz that's what happens. You'd be mighty peeved I'm guessing. The woman's right to a fair trial would be dubious based on your thoughts.

You're gonna say, "Heroin is different to Grass". Well the indos say, 'drugs are drugs, screw with us and we'll give you what you deserve'. You have to hand it to them, they're good to their word. And at one level I agree with them, I think Australia doesn't take drugs seriously enough. I have a daughter and I don't want her to ever have to deal with filfthy pushers or desperate junkies.

As to whether Schapell is innocent, we will never really know.....
