OK some facts for those like me that don't know a lot about them
A dynamometer or "dyno" for short is a device used to measure power and torque produced by an engine.
The concept is to use a dyno to measure and compare power transfer at different points on a vehicle, thus allowing the engine or drivetrain to be modified to get more efficient power transfer.
The dynamometer applies various loads on the engine and measures the engine's ability to move the load. The dynamometer is connected to a computer which uses math to calculate the output of the engine. The engine is run from idle to its maximum RPM and the output is measured and plotted on a graph. Nearly all aspects of engine operation are measured during a dyno run.
The type of Dyno we are using is a chassis dynamometer measuring power from the engine through the wheels. The vehicle is parked on rollers which the car then turns and the output is measured.

jenz58 ·
....cool guys...
Kim I hope you can be there...and at the drive-in as well 😎
Flying VW ·
Yeah I might go, I want to see if I wasted a weekend rebuilding my Engine.
jenz58 ·
....bump :bounce
Golde60 ·
drive in looks to late for me to make it, even if the car is ready.
i m having some dilema's getting info i require from cb so that i can get my car through engineering.
if at all possible, i will be there.
but still alot to sort out
:duh
Golde60 ·
what numbers are you expecting from germany's finest six cylinders dean?
have you got it tuned yet?
kustomkool ·
cool would be great to see some big motors on the dyno ,kim it sounds like your ride is nearly ready,,,cant wait to see it.
Cam ·
sounds good! Whats the policy on non VW's having a go tho?

What's the trophies for? Those who can blow their engine up in the quickest time ???????

mscabrio wrote:What's the trophies for? Those who can blow their engine up in the quickest time ???????
I think "Cruising topless" sounds like a good trophy :P
If i can pry the golf from the hands of my parents..i'll be there.
vwfastback ·
How many runs at the dyno do you get for $35
Grey 57 ·
dunno Kim, its going to be interesting thats for sure. I havent had it professionally tuned yet. Just been replacing various worn out buts and pieces. So getting incrementaly better slowly.
So I reckon it will pull about 80 to 90 hp at the wheels.
See how close I get!!!
Flying VW ·
vwfastback wrote:How many runs at the dyno do you get for $35
last time it was one go each. ?????
It gets a bit busy down there.
jenz58 ·
bump....we've had a change of date so that it doesn't clash with the new date for the VWCV Herbie Fully Loaded cruise to Dromana Drive-In
jenz58 ·
...just bumping so that people can see the date change
jenz58 ·
Sorry people.... with all the date changes due to the problem with the Herbie Fully Loaded screening the VWCV has not had time to get the updated Dyno Day time out to members
I will let you know as soon as we know the new date...it may be July or August now...
At least it will give a couple of you time to get your rides ready for the day so you don't miss out 😎
barls ·
please let it be when im down there
Grey 57 ·
Any news on the new date Jen?
jenz58 ·
...no Mick is looking at his calendar to find one that he can fit in...why does everything happen at the one time.... isn't it always the way? :jesus
jenz58 ·
...I will let you know as soon as I do though
Golde60 ·
jenz58 wrote:At least it will give a couple of you time to get your rides ready for the day so you don't miss out 😎
thanks jen - i presume you were talking about me
the longer the better the way im going - damn these overseas manufacturers. the engineering paperwork is turning into a nightmare!!
i really want to be there!!!
Golde60 ·
Grey 57 wrote:I reckon it will pull about 80 to 90 hp at the wheels.
thats a good starting point dean, but you want to get it up to three figures just for the poser value!!
haha, sorry, couldnt resist.
i m really looking forward to seeing it, and i d love a ride ... (hint 😉 )
seriously though, 80 - 90 at the wheels is pretty good, thats what i m hoping from mine after a dyno run. i reckon your six pot is gonna make more than that!!
vwfastback ·
Am glad that it has been delayed. Mine should now be ready as well.
I will be curious to find out where it is at.

Sounds good. Just a question, do we get to run our cars on the dyno or do the guys at VW Performance run them?
jenz58 ·
Don't forget this one...the club is putting on the BBQ yummmmm...and more trophies to be won :thumb
Grey 57 ·
Is this still on Jen?
And whos going???????
I am!!😀

EgeWorks wrote:Sounds good. Just a question, do we get to run our cars on the dyno or do the guys at VW Performance run them?
good question
Grey 57 ·
The VW performance guys do. For safety reasons.
EgeWorks ·
I figured that. Not that I mind at all, never driven anything on a dyno before. I'll be there I might get a prize for the lowest HP🙂
Grey 57 ·
Not much to it Ege, into 2nd gear and floor it!! whoo hoo
helbus ·
Why second gear?
Grey 57 ·
Dunno Pete.Thats what they were doing last time?
EgeWorks ·
Bumping this one last time. Just shined up the car so see you all tomorrow hopefully.
blutopless2 ·
yep... will be there *crossing fingers* or i'll just bring the cabrio... :duh
Grey 57 ·
Was a great Dyno day with a good turn out. Heres a few pics. Jen will be posting the results.
My T34 was not the biggest HP for the day. That prize went to a very nice Beetle with 2.4ltr Type 1 motor. Man that engine could crank. Last pic this post was the winner. ( I think, was the best reading before I left anyway)
Grey 57 ·
shot of the line up.
My T34 in the blocks. 104hp and 640 ft pounds torque. Happy with that!!!:thumbnn[ Edited on 30-7-2005 by Grey 57 ]

some nice Beetles here today
Grey 57 ·
last one for now
Golde60 ·
sorry guys
wish i could have been there
got some good news about mine this morning from CB performance.... but no guarantees yet. 😠
tell us more..
what are the specs on that 2.4? what sort of numbers did it make?

Looks like you guys had an awesome day. Sorry that I couldn't be there. Was ill and had to stay in bed for the morning!:cry
Shame u didn't have ur videocamera blutopless, I would loved to have seen a video of you driving all the way from Croydon to Werribee changing gears without a clutch ....
U would have looked like this :bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
EgeWorks ·
My poor little car was an embarassment! I'm off to work on him today. Dean, your car is awesome! Thanks for organising anopther great event to all the people that helped! I hope it's on again next year so I can make my triumphant return:P
A pic of my car vs. a stock 71 Super. Check the height difference! He got just over 50HP out of it on the dyno though. Put me to shame.
nn[ Edited on 30-7-05 by EgeWorks ]
jenz58 ·
hehehe Bel got to 24.9 hp with the oil bath air filter off 😂
Why did very one laugh?? :jesus
The red Porsche got to 170hp
Did DKP get up too...was 119? Rob said it did 132 hp a couple of weeks ago
jenz58 ·
Poor Lello....hope she's better soon...must have been a bugger driving home
AVWPC gave two trophies...Best on the Dyno and Peoples Choice
Who got them as I left a bit before the finish?
Grey 57 ·
Jen & the VW club Vic get all the gongs for organising this Dyno Day. Was a great turn out.
Can some one post the results for the day. Mick was writing them all down by rego number.
The DKP Beetle got 110HP from memory. Was running outta fuel from either pump or too small a fuel lines. So I reckon shes got quiet a few more horses waiting to get out. Very nice engine.👍
zac_smits ·
good to see bel in there jen 😀
disappointed that i could make it..i'd like to know what the golf has..it'd be quite interesting i think.
and what'd herbie put out? (or is that a secret :P)
jenz58 ·
I'll try and get someone to email me the results...
Zac has your dad done anything on the notch?? 🙂

jenz58 wrote:Poor Lello....hope she's better soon...must have been a bugger driving home
thanks... wasn't a bad trip home..didn't take long to get the hang of driving without the clutch... thank god i got all the lights green from the city end of the eastern freeway to near the bolte bridge!! couldn't believe it.
She'll be alright though... i will pull the engine out next week and look at the clutch... might put a newbie in anyway whilst i have the engine out to do the thrust bearing. Then i can also fix the head and do all the other million and one things for roadworthy!! hahaha.. we wont know her in a few weeks... be a totally different car.
I will have to post pics of the progress as i go.
Thanks for a great day (besides my bad luck). good to see a good turn up and some high numbers posted on the dyno.
Lello will be all better for the next time.
PrettyBlueBug ·
It was a really great morning, seeing cute 'lil veedubs on the dyno! Hahaha
The cutest sight though would have to have been the pale yellow Beetle getting 50hp. Good on it! I can't remember the lovely old guy's name who owned it, but he was awesome and right into it!
It sucked that Eden's orange Bug didn't perform as he hoped, but that dyno is such a good way of finding out exactly what engines are doing. And it sucked even more that I couldn't debut my Gem, she's a bit too sick to have her guts revved out. 🙁
Anyway, pats on the back to all who organised this event, there should be more! 😀
jenz58 ·
Yes we should have more....to dyno the rides after everyones gone home and tweak the engines.. just to see if it's all OK and what extra power we all get (well you all get 🙂 )
I think the old guy was Jeff....he was a sweety...it's so nice to see new faces at each event we have 👍
helbus ·
If I had the Suby motor all finished in the bus I would have taken that along.
I had to work on Sat though, first time in about 6 months.

Bizarre ·
Nice day and nice cars guys!
Now.... how about a few more facts and figures??
Was this a Dyno Dynamics dyno run in Shootout mode???
EgeWorks ·
It was a Dyno Dynamics dyno. I think it was just a series of power runs. Each person getting their own printout, and the results being written down on a list. I don't know much about the software they use to know if it saves all the figures for each run...
hipichic ·
:cry I forgot :cry
But on the brighter side, we took the kids to the movies to see Herbie again...in more comfortable seats this time lol!
