The Golf Country is a 4WD Golf. These were not popular, don't know why? They were never sold here and i predict it would have been a great seller.

Yeah, Australian's love 4WD's, even if they don't need it. Why do you think subi's are so popular...
restowagenuk ·
stonor was a great show, theres a few more pics on restowagen.
The 4WD golf is a Golf Syncro - I thought they were only ever sold on the continent but Im sure this was RHD - which blows my theory out the water somewhat!
Thats the only one Ive ever seen in the flesh I think, Id imagine theyre quite rare, and that alone makes them pretty cool 🙂

LoL there are always some crack pots sorry encentrics (sp) there. One year I went there was a guy there who had filled his car with rubbish and painted in with old engine oil to keep rust away. I think it was serious too. That one always threw me out but then I was a little altered myself that day LOL

That short split I believe was built by a father and son duo when they owned a small shop called Empress autos in Empress street off the Walworth Road 'round the corner from where I lived. It was the same colour scheme 25 years ago! From what I recall they sold it to someone who used it for tricks such as rolling over under braking (at this stage it had been fitted with an all over roll cage -literally)and lifting the front wheels on accellerating. I know it needed a 1cwt of concrete inside to stop it rolling over forwards in case of emergency stops. The father also made a trike that he used to go to the Isle of Man TT race.

I'm not splitting hairs here but I'm 99% sure that the shortie split was built in the late eights by Derrick Day a young police man from solihull. (Thats where I'm from) , I used to see it parked on his drive way it was originally converted/shortened by kingfisher customs in Smethwick Birmingham. It was originaly painted a light blue and sported jelly baby graphics. I don't know what happened to it from then but it turned up again after 10+ years and was properly restored and painted the colour you see it now.
Funny how much some cars just follow you around for life. I think the reason it was shortened in the first place was it was hit in the middle. The best thing I always remembered was that it would pull wheelies with the standard 1600 engine and box.
Ancientbugger I'm sureover the years there might of been a few of these bonkers buses build, its funny how there never forgotten eh
cheers

Mr Bubblehead that is freaky! I'm from Shirley , Solihull. I know Derek and his freaky vw's. Always had heaps on his drive. If you knew him you would have known "Bears VW" just around the corner.maybe? I was good friends with Phil etc at the shop and they did alot on my SWB GP Buggy and other dubs. Small world!
