Another take on Shapelle Corby

The Corby Case

A differing point of view ...

Corby and the mob
Andrew Bolt (Opinion, Herald Sun)
01jun05

AND now to the verdict on the Schapelle Corby case. I find the defendant guilty of xenophobia, spite, boorishness and a self-righteous tribal hysteria.

No, I don't mean Corby. I'm referring to the weeping and bellowing mob that is demanding we do all it takes -- even starve the poorest Indonesians - to free this convicted drug trafficker. "Our" Schapelle.

What a shock to see the beast of mob rule roar like this, and in support of a woman who seems on the evidence more likely to be guilty than she's painted.

Yes, Corby may be as innocent as she says. But picture how she must look, and how we all now look, to an Indonesian, whether a judge or a citizen.

Here is a surfer girl who worked as a bar hostess in Tokyo's nightclub area, flying into Bali for reportedly the fifth time in six years.

(Corby, a student beautician who'd scraped up cash from working at a fish-and-chip shop, told 60 Minutes she'd been to Bali "five or six times since I was 16".)

Customs officials screen her bags and detect something suspicious. They watch her, and later tell a court she seems nervous. Her bodyboard bag is more than twice its usual weight, bulging with an extra something the size of a stuffed pillow.

Actually, she says later, she'd only dragged her bag, and had so much other luggage she couldn't tell its weight was unusual, or that there was anything inside but a bodyboard and flippers. Yes, well.

Two police and two customs officials agree on what happened next. They say Corby's brother James carried the bag for her to the customs area, where officer I Gusti Nyoman Winata asked her to open it.

Corby zipped open the front pocket. Now the main zip, demanded Winata.

"The suspect (seemed) to panic," he later testified.

"When I opened the bag a little bit, she stopped me and said, 'No!'

"I asked why. She answered, 'I have some . . .' She looked confused."

ABC's Lateline showed Winata re-enacting Corby's lunge to stop him opening her bag. He seemed as honest as Corby does, and said he had no doubt of her guilt.

Winata looked inside and found 4.1kg of top-quality marijuana, stowed in two airlock plastic bags, one tucked inside the other.

What is it, he asked?

"It's marijuana," the officials heard Corby reply.

Keep thinking how this all must look to an Indonesian. Who would you believe?

Think how it seems when the marijuana turns out to be hydroponically grown, and worth anywhere up to $80,000 in Bali, where it is prized by expatriates who are sick of the weak local weed and feel safer buying from a tourist. Big profits.

Keep picturing. The Indonesians learn that Corby, although having no criminal record, comes from a wild and woolly family.

One of her brothers is in jail for burglary and stealing, her mother is on to her fourth partner after having six children by three men. Her father had a minor conviction some 30 years ago for possessing marijuana.

Sure, none of that makes her guilty, but how would all this make Corby seem to an Indonesian? Here's a tip: Not like she came from the responsible land of the straight-and-narrow.

It gets worse. Corby's defence team is soon headed by a salesman who looks like a spiv and is a former bankrupt who still owes creditors plenty.

Her main defence witness becomes an alleged rapist flown in from a Melbourne jail to tell how he heard some crook who'd heard some other crook say Corby was unwittingly carrying drugs for crooks operating at the Brisbane and Sydney airport terminals.

With Australians like this behind Corby, it's a wonder the whole country wasn't tossed into the cell with her.

The judges are then asked to believe these unknown smugglers took the marijuana into a high-security area at Brisbane in easy-to-see-through plastic and popped it into a random bag to be flown to another high-security area in Sydney.

Why the smugglers would do that, rather than simply drive the drugs down to Sydney by car, all safe, no one can say. That they then let their valuable drugs fly off to Bali is another mystery.

No wonder our own Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty dismissed Corby's theory as "flimsy". Corby's judges must have thought her team took them for idiots.

Idiots? They soon learned plenty of Australians took them for far worse. And now it was not Corby on trial, and losing, but Australia.

In one heady spasm, hundreds of thousands of Australians became certain that Corby the beautiful battler was in fact innocent.

Suddenly she was the star of a reality-TV Perils of Pauline -- complete with cartoon-like big breasts, every-woman prettiness and more tears than a soapie. It helped the plot that she was repeatedly filmed hands bound and besieged, pale in a jabbering, jostling crowd of brown foreigners.

Damn those natives. "The judges don't even speak English, mate, they're straight out of the trees, if you excuse my expression," raged 2GB Sydney fill-in host Malcolm T. Elliott.

"Whoa, give them a banana and away they go."

Others screamed that the judges were lying Muslims out for revenge (in fact, the chief judge was a Christian, and the other two Hindus).

Newspapers attacked Indonesia's courts as corrupt and their jails as temples of "gloating sadism" where there was "little sympathy of foreigners, for which you may perhaps read Christians". Save "our" Schapelle from the demon heathen!

No surprise, then, that Indonesian officials here were bombarded with so many threats and insults that Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer had to plead for them to be left alone. What would we say of Indonesians if our own diplomats were monstered like this?

Now Corby's defenders demand we boycott struggling Bali. Actor Russell Crowe, among others, even warned Indonesia to remember we gave money for its tsunami victims -- as if we only gave charity in exchange for passes out of jail.

Sick, but the feeling has grown. The Salvation Army, out on its Red Shield appeal, had to promise not to send donations to Indonesia. Let their poor suffer for "our" Schapelle.

Meanwhile, radio hosts insisted the Prime Minister call the Indonesian President to fix things in court for Corby, as if such interference wasn't plainly corrupt.

Worryingly, even senior politicians lost their heads in the hysteria, with Justice Minister Chris Ellison vowing to try bringing Corby home in a "one-off" prisoner exchange. The other 150 Australians in jail overseas should get breast implants.

HAVE we lost our heads? Are we really such a vile rabble?

What must Indonesians make of this hissing mob that threatens their diplomats, vilifies their country, blackmails them with aid and treats their judges as the corrupt playthings of our politicians? And all this for the sake of a convicted drug smuggler who seems quite probably guilty, and only possibly innocent.

Even our whinges about their drug laws must seem bizarre. Guess who truly has the worst laws -- Indonesia, which gave Corby 20 years' jail for having 4.1kg of marijuana; or Victoria, which meanwhile gave a mere 12-month community service order to a teacher found with 29kg -- and let her keep her teaching licence?

So how must we seem to Indonesians? Like barbarians, or even terrorists, and it's hard at the moment to think them very wrong.

Yeah, it bordered on embarassing some of the crap coming out of our media. Miss Corby is the only one who knows the truth. It wouldn't stop me from going to Bali for a holiday ( I'd personally rather go to mexico ). Are we going to also help the other 150 come home?

Whooo Hooo We are going to Mexico in a couple of months 🙂

HotRodMatt ·

I agree with most of the article.

However, I would always avoid Indonesia. Same as any other country where the burden of proof is not on the prosecution.

Personally I doubt her innocence, but in a legal system that even approaches being fair even someone who pleads guilty must still have the facts of the case proven. Possession is not sufficient proof. Finger-printing, airline records etc should all have been reviewed.

The case would not have proceeded in Australia with the major evidence tainted as it was in this case.

Is that a good reason to "boycott" and even "hurt" a country. Hell yes.
We "hurt" South Africa much worse in an attempt to change their legal system and end apartied. What's the difference?

Most of those saying we shouldn't boycott Bali as a tourist destination are they same one who make return journeys doing more damage by exploiting their poverty for their cheap entertainment, clothing etc.

this case makes me sick.:pukei cant understand why she is recieving so much media coverage in the first place as she would be found more then guilty in aus in my opinion???2 friends of the family(husband and wife) went to india(supposidly currupt legal system) 9 years ago and they sent us a post card from over there saying how cheap everything was there......ended up getting busted with over 3kg of hash worth probably $50-$100us back then(but it was deffinatly not for importing,i know for a fact it was for personal use)and they had to sit in an indian jail for about 4 years with absolutly no help from the aus government????they were big time activists in the aus scene trying to get it decrimmilized back then and they had a red mark on thier name......so it is very unfair how the government chooses who to help at thier disscresion???when you go to a country you have to adhear to thier laws....ie,if you decied to smuggle a kg of H into aus from thailand and get caught then you get the death penalty but if you make it back then youve got over half a million in your pocket...if you do the crime be prepared to do the time......

Dub-Buggier ·

The bleeding hearts of Australia unite, poor pretty girl got caught, if it was a ugly girl or a fella you would not have herd anything. aren’t there 2 aussie boys on the death sentence in Tibet or something i don’t see the best Australian defence lawyers going over to bribe their judge.

if the media beat-up wasn’t so bad maybe a deal could have been brokered but seeing that its was so public how could they not make an example.

A person can be smart but "people" (1+ persons) are usually more stupid then not (Mob hysteria.)

amazer ·

I only rate her as having a 50% chance of being guilty. But if she is ever going to get out of there she had better tell her family to shut the hell up. Some pretty low intelligence scores there, im certain of that. I'm pretty sure they could fit right in around my suburb. ie low class filth. Obviously she is appealing to other low class filth as well. As if sending hoax letters is going to do anything but harm her chances. morons.

err disclaimer is that I am not saying that to believe she is innocent means you are a moron, just that she has attracted some... I am undecided.

Thats a bit simple isnt it Matt, you usually have more intelligent responses.

I contribute to the economy of Bali, I spend money on accomodation, food, services, etc

And i promote the country as a place with beautiful people and pristine surf conditions...

meh, who's to know besides schappelle anyways? how can we judge when the only thing fed to us is what the media tells us, which is more often than not bias, opinionated crap.
Personally, i've never been to bali, and i wont be going there anytime soon. there's no snow there.

Julie-Anne ·

Andrew Bolt writes some pretty controversial articles - if anyone cares to read much of the Melbourne papers....

Schapelle would not be the only person from Australia that makes an annual pilgramage to Bali - I have dozens of friends who do it. Why wouldn't you when more often than not, it's cheaper for 10 days in Bali than 7 on the Gold Coast?

Personally I don't think she's guilty - there are couple of things that don't make sense - now I'm not saying that drug traffickers make sense whatsoever but think about this -

1) 4 kgs of dope is worth approx $24000 in AUS - not exactly talking sheep stations here are we - if she's a Bali frequent flyer she'd know the punishment for drug importation and I don't know who'd bet their life on half the average years salary

2) Who says it's worth $80 grand in Bali ? How does Andrew Bolt know ? Are we all so stupid that we'd believe that they don't have high quality marijuana in Indonesia ?

3) If you were a drug smuggler, would you put your cargo in the most accessible bag you were carrying ? I bloody wouldn't.

4) Coppers say that there is no such thing as a coincidence - things happen for a reason - and it's a mighty big coincidence that there were the 'bad baggage handlers' on duty the day this girl left AUS

5) What does her family's situation have to do with her ? I know of plenty of drug addicts that have come from perfectly good families, as well as good kids that have come out of scum families....that's a very long bow to draw. And to mention that her mum's had different kids to different dads - wtf has that got to do with the price of fish ?

I certainly don't agree with the powder in the envelope crap but I would not go to Bali before this (I work in International trade and let me tell you - I have never dealt with a more corrupt system in my life than the Balinese Customs) and I definetly won't go now.

But off course you wouldn't....as U state below speaking from higher moral ground or what??:duh

Your entitled to your opinion....like all of us!😉

How do U know its worth approx $24k in AUS??:duh

Yes well how does Andrew Bolt know..??? $80K and how do U know $24K ???:duh

3) If you were a drug smuggler, would you put your cargo in the most accessible bag you were carrying ? I bloody wouldn't.

Maybe she had a theory that by placing it right in front of them, they would not check there as it was too obvious...reverse psychology.....she did try to prevent the customs from opening the bag.....did she not??

Just because U wouldn't do something does not mean somebody else wont......maybe she's just not too smart??:duh

4) Coppers say that there is no such thing as a coincidence - things happen for a reason - and it's a mighty big coincidence that there were the 'bad baggage handlers' on duty the day this girl left AUS

Which "coppers" would that be??...another proven scientific FACT or is this folk lore we are talking about? Is there any evidence to say there were none of the "bad baggage" handlers on duty the previous day or the day after or the week before and if there were, what would that prove without any factual proof??:duh

5) What does her family's situation have to do with her ? I know of plenty of drug addicts that have come from perfectly good families, as well as good kids that have come out of scum families....that's a very long bow to draw.

On a point of statistical numbers I would beg to differ with U and would say you are the one drawing a long bow by trying to imply that ones family background and enviroment plays no part in how one leads ones life.

And to mention that her mum's had different kids to different dads - wtf has that got to do with the price of fish ?

I agree its got nothing to do with the price of fish ......however if a psychological analysis were to be done in relation to her mental stability/outlook due to her "interesting" upbringing/home life.....who knows where that might lead??

I certainly don't agree with the powder in the envelope crap but I would not go to Bali before this (I work in International trade and let me tell you - I have never dealt with a more corrupt system in my life than the Balinese Customs)

So tells us....if U haven't been to Bali, how have U had any firsthand dealings with Balinese customs and could U please enlighten us as to what these first hand corrupt practices entailed??:duh

Oh...would it be imprudent to ask as to what "link" U perform by working in International trade........not a baggage handler perchance???:duh

and I definetly won't go now.
I dont have a prob with that !:kiss

Let me put 3 things forward here.

1)She was tried with due process of law & found guilty.

2) Anyone who thinks the result would have been different (other than the length of the sentence) had this happened in Australia is having themselves on.
If someone got pulled up at Sydney or Brisbane airport today with 4kg of drugs in their baggage, they'd be ratshit too.
No one honestly believes if you told the court here that some one must have tampered with your gear, the judge would send you home & apologise for the inconvenience.
You'd have to be able to prove it. The authorities have got you red handed, they don't need to prove a thing.

And lastly, from personal experience, 90% of the NSW prison population was set up. You ask them, they'll tell you.

Absolutely... you fraud. :P

andytlr ·

I couldn't be bothered reading everyone's comments. But what I find so stupid about this is that it is a total trial by media. Some of the stuff in this article could be bullshit but you would never know because its just taking one reporters word over another. I saw a thing on telly talking about all the crap that had come out in the media. Like how she had only been to bali twice in 5 years not 6 times and her sister lives in QLD not in Bali.

Whether she is guilty or not is hard to tell, everyone has their own opinion. But if the indonesian police did a little bit better job in the first place, by fingerprinting the bag etc it may have been a little more clear cut.

In regards to her opening the bag and looking nervous. Wouldn't you if you were asked to open your bag then saw a massive bag of weed in there... Who doesn't know what it looks like, of course you would know what it was straight away.

The other thing that shits me is judging her on her family. Oh my god, her mum has been married 3 or 4 times, shit she must be guilty.

The argument of her taking 'quality stuff' to Bali to sell it to tourists is a little flawed. It would still be far less risk to buy it there and then sell it off to tourists. Who cares if you are giving them good shit or not. That would be higher profit because you can buy it for less in indonesia than you can in Australia. Why would anyone buy that much weed in Australia if you could get it for less in Indonesia...

No one can be certain whether she is guilty or not, all we can do I guess is wait and see what happens with appeals. But what shits me is the trial by media, especially from tabloid newspapers like the herald sun that only seem to put forward one point of view without even contemplating the other.

Over and out

KDFking ·

just a few quick points...
1.she had possesion and secondly she said that it was "marijuana" which means guilty in any court in aus(possesion +knowledge)...
2.the weed over there is ditch weed..(absolute crap)ive been there a few times.....(never been stupid enough to buy)
3.with thousands of surfers and tourists flying in there every few days how could there not be a market for "high grade" weed?????:duh

in my opinion it was a harsh sentence for weed but as mentioned before if you go to a country you have to adhear to thier laws........:kiss

I don't disagree with adhearing to their laws... Knowing that it was weed means nothing. Everyone knows what it looks like, if you opened your bag and saw a whole lot of green shit in air tight bags what would you instantly think it was.

Andytrl,i dont think that you know to much about law mate.....but if you get busted with weed and you say that you found it and think its something like parsley then they have to let you off because in the eyes of the law you have to know that something is illegal to be charged for it..ie.possesion is not sufficient(possesion +knowledge is...) i know a few people that got off just like that.....thats why cops will always ask you "whats this" when they find something.......as they have to hear it from your mouth....GET IT???????????????

Yeah, I understand that. Just that the reports are usually so emotion based often disregarding facts. I didn't mean this to get into a full on debate, I just put forward an opinion then got a whole lot of questions to answer.

But yes I understand posession and knowledge. But it is a bit like opening a bag with a dog bowl in it and you knowing it is a dog bowl. Just because you knew it was a dog bowl doesn't mean you put it in there. Logicially, not necessiarly by law.

DOUBLECAB: What about Kylies but... Could look good airbrushed onto the back of a bug. The fenders could help for a starting shape. Actually that could work for her tits too.

Yep ......why not, if Sam Newman can have Pamela Anderson on the front of his townhouse........actually Kylie's butt would look good on your bonnet with the chrome strip down the middle forming a thong.....and then you could say :kiss Kylie's butt.

Why don't you just post the artwork for all our discerning intellectual intercourse....:duh

Whats the story with the legal team. Sack them all, and then replace them all apart from 2. But now the case is in the hands of a lawyer who thinks he's a comedian! Isnt he lapping up the spotlight.

I sure as hell hope she is guilty, because she wont be getting out of indonesia without large sums of money being exchanged. I'd hate to see that happen with a not guilty person.
