I am getting a new laptop as this one is a few years old and doesnt even have a cd or dvd burner or player in it.
I want to transfer photos and work files and my MYOB program .
I was advised to buy a flash drive.
Its a 256mb and says it is driverless with XP.
I am using xp.
I put the flash drive into a USB port and I am trying to transfer stuff on it.
when I select things and want to move them it shows "send to"
I select this and the only new thing is" removable disc F".
I click on that and it says insert disc???
What am I doing wrong???
Please help.
Cheers
Dave

Try formatting the flash drive. Sometimes they need to be formatted before 1st use.
It's all I've got. Sorry.
57kombi ·
So how do you format them.
Also I used geeks as a term of respect as they know computers , I dont.

Okay, I got my bro (the software engineer and Harvey norman computer techy) to help me help u.
Ok, to format, go to MY COMPUTER and right click on the icon of the flash drive. A menu should pop up where u click, and click on format. Then follow the steps and there u go.
For ur initial problem, I think i have the key (I THINK I CAN SAVE YOU, SO DON'T FORMAT IT YET). Don't click on send to. When u click on that, its looking for an F:/ Drive (which it says its a cd drive. Cause like u said, its looking for a disk. And cause u probably don't have a disk in there that can be written on, it says that u aint got no disk in there and u need to insert one.)
Instead, click on the file (click once) that u want to transfer. Right click on the mouse and the menu should pop up where u clicked. Click on copy. Now go to C:/ drive (your hard disk) through MY COMPUTER. and double click on the C:/ Drive icon. Right click anywhere in the window (not over another file, but in a white space) and the menu should pop up again. Click "paste" in the menu. and it should transfer.
Goodluck. BUT DON"T FORMAT YET. Most dont need to be before transfering data.

How to format them...Let me think.
Open up windows exploder, so you can see all the drives.
right click on the flash drive (f: you said?)
Choose format.
Agree with whatever it raves on about.
57kombi ·
tried all that , it just keeps coming up with "please insert a disc into drive F"
I bought it from Harvey Norman as well.

Dave
57kombi ·
Also , I dont know what I am doing, but why send it to the hard drive if I want it on the flash drive.
Also nothing is showing anywhere that it is actually inserted???
Cheers
Dave

Clicked on format and guess what.
It says, "please insert a disc into drive F"
Anyone, its driving me mad. I thought they automatically show instructions.

Dam, sorry, read it wrong.
[Heres what my bro has to say. He is literally a computer himself. lol]
But do u have any other USB devices that are working?
90% of people that have issues with USB is because (it depends) that usually their drivers are not installed properly or the USB hasn't been wired up properly with the vcc,d+,d-,ground connectors (for desktop). On some laptops I have known that there are a few usb devices (including mice and pen drives) that do not work with them, usually these issues where inherited by HP/Compaq computers because the engineers were having too many lunch breaks instead of designing "proper" digital logic circuits.
Hope that helps.

I have had a camera download on the same port and also used the same one for my printer so its working O.K.
Only other thing I am using is the internet conection in the other port, I have tried swapping them over and still no change.
Cheers
And thanks for trying to help

Do u have service pack 2 installed?
A corrective patch exists for USB 2.0 mangement under WinXP sp1. It is included in sp2. Friend had the same problem, but now it works fine.
57kombi ·
dont know.
I have checked on the drivr by right clicking on the drive f and then going to properties and it shows that legend flashdrive is enabled.
but nothing is happening.

Here is how u check if you have service pack 2 installed on your laptop:
When your computer starts does it say "Windows XP" only? If so it has sp2.
If however it states "Windows XP Home Edition" or "Windows XP Professional Edition" you DON'T have sp2.
57kombi ·
Yes I have sp2.
Still cant get it to work.
I thought as soon as I pluged it in something would show up on the screen.
Any more help???
Cheers

Dave, it is a little weird that you didn't get a disk with the flash drive for installation. I would take the whole lot back to Harvey and get someone there to sort it out. If all else fails do a search for it on the net and download it. There are heaps of sites and problem shooting forums (just like this one) about computers. If your still haveing problems by mon. let me kow and ill ask my tech in the studio. The only other advise I can give you is next time... by a mac.

warb ·
should not need a driver... id take the whole lot back... but if you want to have a play, try this..
control pannel..
adminisrtative tools..
Computer Management..
you will see this screen..
the flash drive will come up as a removeble disk.. like mine in the above (e🙂 .. right click to get some options and format it... careful, make sure you pick the right one

My bro is away at work at the moment, but when he comes back this arvo, he could help ya.
Why don't you try taking it back to harvey norman and bring ur laptop and they could help ya. Probably something simple that would only take 5 minutes. Take it to the computer customer service desk, and they should be willing to help ya, (if its not too busy). Give it a try.
