ok shannons told me i need to put an alarm in chaos to get him insure for $12000. this got me thinking what make and model alarm most of you have in your vw and what you would recommend?

Bizarre ·

the Brandt $350 immobiliser one

This is the base one that complies with Shannons requirements.

They are just up at 5 dock shops, but doesnt matter. They come to you

barls ·

cool i was leaning towards them or black widow. the one you mentioned is the transponder version that they mention on their site

Bizarre ·

To be honest i lean towards spending as little as possible to get a good insurance company.

All the alarms are of an OK standard.

I put an immobalizer in my bus along with central locking, Only really wanted the immobalizer so i could get keyless entry. The immobalizer cost me $50 off ebay.... there was plenty of more expensive ones on there. Do a search, www.ebay.com.au

Bizarre ·

trouble is you need to get an "approved" one installed to qualify for Shannons :duh

barls ·

yeah but they dont tell you all of their approved list only the top one

Are they in league with the alarm companies? Ah well, if your wheels are worth that much it's worth it.
My old van has a switch between the horn ant interior light. Guess that isn't a qualifying alarm. But I guess there aren't too many insurance companies that would go near a few hundred dollars worth of van.

im currently looking at a value of about $12000 so he was going to have an alarm anyway.

i will be going through "cyclops" for my next alarm system. they claim to have no false alarms, and a no theft history. they also do the alarms for army and police vehicles.

anyone else?

We needed to get an immobiliser as well to get insurance with Shannons. They didn't specify a brand but there was a list of specifications the immobiliser had to comply with. Biggest seemed to be all black wiring.

We got one put in from Strathfield Car Radio that cost us $169 supplied and installed. It is not an alarm though, just an immobiliser that self arms after 30 seconds.

Hope that helps

Yogie - did they come out or do you have to drop in??

Could be worthwhile checking out some details in this car audio forum which has the following "Alarms, GPS and Tracking" section:

Mongoose immobilizer/alarm in our bus, approved alarms must be self arming no more than 30 seconds and all wires must be black from memory, can't remember the model number, the siren was just an add on to the immobilizer.

akean1 ·

self arming sucks! usualy means locking yourself out of the car. not for me anyway. most alarms give you the option to self arm or not when installed

Not if it is just an immobiliser. You have to have central door locking added and make it an alarm for the locking to take place, otherwise it just immobilises automatically for you.
