O.K no messing about this time
This is for real.
The kombi has to go, it is in this months Just Cars Magazine as I need the cash.
I tried to juggle some finances around so that I could keep it, but cant manage it as we are having a baby in 7 weeks and need the cash so the missus can have some time off.
I AM selling .
It is advertised at offers around $25K, But if you are interested u2u me I am going to be VERY flexible.
You have all seen the pics and you know what went into the rebuild, I spent over $20K in parts, panels, chroming, suspension, paint ect and that doesnt include 4 years labour so someone is going to get a bargain.
I would like to see it go interstate so I wont see it but whoever makes the best offer gets it.
I have had offers from overseas but it is too much trouble trying to sort out shippers and transfers, All I want to do is hand over the keys and wave it goodbye
I am not sure about putting it on E-Bay yet, I will have to see if there are any offers?
I have deleted my pictures as I have transfered them onto my new laptop and so I can only post an old one that doesnt show the new deluxe trim.
If anyone has any pics please post them here.
Details.

See how many believe that
57kombi ·
The amount of work that went into it , it feels like it was the one above.
Forgot to add that it comes with some goodies, like a new never used Justkampers drive away tent/awning that attaches to the side, also a set of rock and roll hinges as I didnt manage to finish the rear,
A helphos spotlight(rare as f@#k in the light blue colour) and the roof rack.

Hey Davey where's all the pics you've posted before? I've looked for 'em, can't find 'em?🙂
57kombi ·
I dont know??
I wont be able to post some till after the weekend as I havent had time to set up the new laptop and I have already transfered the pics onto it.
I somehow think that most members know what it looks like, but after the weekend I think I might add a few more pics.
Also I can post pics taken from any angle or of any part, I have nothing to hide.
It is a solid rust FREE bus.
I have spent over $600 on stainless nuts and bolts alone, never mind all the money Creative had of me.
Cheers
Dave

Just thought I would do a bit of a run down on what was done.
Might not have time to finish it tonight so bear with me.
REPLACED WITH NEW
both sills inner and outer on both sides
both rear wheel arches
all outriggers
both center chassis sections
Front nose section had been replaced before I bought it
all solid brake lines
all rubber brake hoses
all slave cylinders
master cylinder
all grommets for brake lines and clips
dropped spindles by RobK
all wheel bearings
shockers(KYB)
tie rods
all gear rod buses
all gearbox mounts
all seals and all rubbers(everything rubber, windows, door seals, lenses, etc)
NOS tail light glass
center brake light glass
headlights
12 volt wiper armature
Stainless mirror arms and mirrors
door handles(rear hatch is the original and in good condition keyed to the rest)
Creative jail bars
Creative deluxe trim
Creative polished pop-outs
westy ally roof rack
hub caps
interior rear view mirror
locks for petrol flap and engine lid
jacking point covers
new side window slide plates
All chrome work was redone including
New nose badge
rear tail light surrounds
center brake light surround
radio blanking plate
rear hatch stay
wiper blades
ash tray
Stainless steel nuts and bots used throughout
All underneath and inside shot blasted after rust was cut out, then painted in POR15, American rust proof paint( this stuff is bloody hard, you can hit it with a hammer and it wont crack)
Top painted in Glassurit 2 pac after using an epoxy 2 pac under coat.
Engine
1600 tp
new coil
009
fuel pump
extractors
tinwear powdercoated
polished alternator
new clutch, bearing and pressure plate
all engine rubber seals and flywheel seal
All wiring replaced and changed to 12 volts and a new fuse box fitted
Also fitted a KMH speedo with internal fuel guage.
New tyres
new battery
later (larger) fuel tank
Internal top seatbelt mounts fitted to inside of B pillar,(covered at the moment with the roof lining)
The rear has a beetle box straight axle fitted and this gets rid of the reduction hubs and allows you to drive at and above the speed limits, and lowers the bus 3 inches, it sits nice with the dropped spindles up front and still has full suspension travel.
The dropped spindles give a better ride than a cut and turned bay front beam.
I will also supply the spare paint , Just incase.
I have 4 litres of weis, top colour and 4 litres of basaltblau, the bottom colour, these are old BMW colours that I thought would suit the period of the bus and still make it a bit differant from the usual blue/white, red/white buses.
Also, I keep remembering things.
When I first started the bus, some 4 years ago, the semaphore sections had been welded over, I didnt want to cut these out again as they have a nice rolled edge and if I just cut them out this would leave a sharp edge.
So they were left welded up, I have since found some sections from another bus and will give them to the buyer just incase they want to weld them in.
I bought most of the parts from A, Schofield and made 2 trips to the U.K to get them.
Cheers

who ever buys this gets themselves in my opinion the best restod splitty in aust
murray
57kombi ·
Thank you .
As I said, it must go so make an offer,I have had a few calls from the ad in Just cars and am telling them to come on this site to see more pics.
We might get some new members out of it.
Also as I intend to get another splitty when I am more cashed up and start again.
I am making one condition on the sale.
The prospective buyer must come or send someone they trust to check the bus over first.
I wouldnt buy anything like this just from photos so I wouldnt want anyone else to
Cheers

its been used off road. Its not worth the money now. :P
kombibob wrote:someone in qld buy it so i can perve on it
i wish i could fulfil that wish for all the qlders about
but i wanna finish my oval first..
but i may have a lapse in sanity and go mad
then i'll be a happy 'lonely' man wif a split to live in as i'd probably lose da house, mrs and dog..
tempting ..😉
57kombi ·
Its far from the best in Aus, but it is restored and an honest bus that has been done properly at great expense.
I have had people tell me that they have been quoted $20 K plus to do the body work and paint on a split and if you then add the $20k I have spent on parts , you get over $40k,
Thats if you cant do the work yourself.
So come on wheres the offers.
Or I start posting pictures????

The stains on the inside of the engine lid is from fish oil, I havent cleaned the excess off yet, I would rather it stayed there for a while.

Heres one of after the welding had been done and before the paint was stripped off.
Well the roof had been stripped and primered.
All the underneath had been done and the new sills, rear guards etc had been fitted and painted in POR15 and the body straightened. I then painted it the first time with 2 pac epoxy primer, them sanded after using a guide coat, them more primer.
And then left it while I went to England on holiday and also to visit Mr Schofield for more parts.

57kombi ·
Are we there yet??
This is one of the outriggers(all were replaced) the brown in the pic is dirt
57kombi ·
And here it was in 2 pac epoxy primer, the original paint had been removed by using a flapper wheel and sanding discs and this was the first of many coats of paint, the 2 pac epoxy is actually an american paint called Ameron and was designed for use on North Sea oil rigs, it is used on the steel and concrete legs in salt water, not like normal primer which actually atracts water.

Dave, keep the pics coming...
Can you post pics of the rear inside, and the rear floor? Is the checker covering just a mat? What is the inside of the floor like? Any pics?
Cheers
byronbus ·
Did you do the welding dave?
57kombi ·
The inside of the rear is perfect, there was two small rust holes over the outriggers, these were patched with a floor section from another bus so that the floor matches, they were only about 2 inches square. It was them sprayed with POR 15, I made sure the thing will never rust again.
I did this bus to keep so it was done right.
The check flooring is vinyl and is glued to a 4 mm thick MDF, this is screwwed to the floor.
I will go and take a pic now.
Cheers
Dave

Cheers dave...
57kombi ·
The welding was the only thing I didnt do, this was done by PMGBUS .
Heres some shots I just took of the inside. I did use a flash so the red looks a bit bright.
The seat belts were fitted so I could carry my daughter in her baby seat( when I had a bay rear seat in it) we actually carried 2 babbies.
57kombi ·
another
57kombi ·
In the first pic it looks like a stain on the rear wheel arch, this is the old fish oil again, EVERY seam was treated, over the POR15, I did mention I didnt want it to rust again didnt I.
57kombi ·
The top of the engine bay is flat, it is just the carpet that I put on it that has a wavey edge

Last one.
The headlining is actually Ford falcon material I glued to a wooden camper headlining from another splitty.
57kombi ·
And just for the record, Bay middle and rear seats WILL fit in a splitty.
I borrowed some for a while but had to give them back so if anyone buys it and need seats they can easily find bay ones.
Cheers

Very nice indeed. Incredible how that whole resto took only 6 months (saw but the date of the start and finish photo). Congrats mate. I'm sure there is someone who wants to buy it. Well, I think everyone would want it. Just depends if they got the dough. hmmm, money sux.
[Edited on 17/6/2005 by mynameischris88]
57kombi ·
Sorry Chris but you have the dates wrong.
It was still in primer in July 2004, I then went to England for 6 weeks and brought back a load of bits and then spent 40 hours a week for 3 months from August to the show in November just to finish it.
I bought it on the 21st of April 2001 and it took 3 years to cut the rust out, weld it, do the body work and primer it and then flat it ready for paint.
The last 3 months were the easy part of painting it and putting all the new bits on.
4 years of love and hate and I dont regret doing it, as I have said, I spent $20k on bits and the buyer is getting 4 years of labour for nothing, But I have to sell.
Cheers
Dave
bajachris88 ·
Holy crap mate. Just proves, ur bus is going really cheap for all the slaving and work you have done for it. Dam.
Yeah, it seems i do have the date really wrong then by the sound of it. That bus looks so much happier than what it did before the resto. Good on ya mate, very nice bus.
57kombi ·
Its funny but the pic you are talking about where it is blue and shitty, you would never believe that I had been working on it for 3 years when that was taken.
As some who have done the work will confirm, splits are a lot of work to get right, that is why there are a lot of people doing rats, they know what is involved.

Disappointing mate, but all the best.
I like the door screws. That was exactly what I was after, but got phillips heads. Might still get allen key ones.. They look heaps neater too..
57kombi ·
Hi Jim.
Dont worry I will be back with another once we are settled with the new baby in the new house. Just need the cash to settle some debts so the missus can have more maternity leave.
I tried to juggle the finances around but the only way was to sell the bus, as long as it goes to a good home.
I think the stainless allen ones look the business, I have used them on everything, even the tail lights and number plates, Have a look at the pic with the drivers door open you can see them all along the edge,I think I ended up spending over $600 on them.
Hows yours coming along, any recent pics.
Cheers

Starting to get some interest.
I will tell you something, someone will get an absolute bargain even if I say so myself.
Its funny , the interest is coming from people who have done buses or have a bus and are about to start a resto.
I think they know how much it costs to do one.

That's a fact!!!
57kombi ·
If anyone wants any specific pics of any parts or from any angles, just let me know.
I am not shy with the camera.
Also I forgot to mention.
The bus was built in June 1957 and I have a genuine instruction manual printed July 1957, one of these would have come with the bus when purchased new.
It took me 3 years to find this and it will go with the bus to the new owner.
Cheers

sold?
sad day for you, but what a ripper car
i would have bought this if only it was for sale in a year or 2 when i had means and opportunity (read: money and garage)
if you sold it for $30k it would have been a bargain.
i hope to see it in melbourne....
what are my chances? or is it staying in SA?
57kombi ·
Not staying in S.A., but not going to the U.K. either.
You will have to wait and see if the new owner wants to show it off.
