Well I've just about finished the new 1916.
Just waiting on the fan to come back from balancing and she'll fitted in the Speedster.:bounce
Two things that I hated....
1. Porting is the most boring job on the surface of the earth...followed by..
2. Tig welding up the fan...preheat-weld-preheat-weld etc...followed by 3 hrs in the furnace-up to 650deg and cool down for stress releaving.馃檨 gezzzzz.

Bizarre 路
Whoo Hoo - Looks good
Ummm how come the fan doesnt line up?
speedster356 路
Hehehe, ur not supposed to see that...
it's a combination of camera angle and the fan shroud is not pushed down far enough in the photo. 馃榾
Dasdubber 路
I like the Fram filter - gives it a period performance feel.
Looks great. Was it a nightmare to get the linkage to work from behind the fan shroud?

NigeType3 路
Loks good what carbs you using and what is that big orange thing
speedster356 路
The orange thingy is an original 356 Framm filter (still need to repaint and add the new decals). The linkages in the rear were not a problem, there is a kit available for that. I wanted the filter so the linkages needed to be in the rear as the original 356.
The carbs are 44 IDFs.
Original 356 engines....
Robo 路
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, is the fram an oil or fuel filter?
I know some will go, what a dummy but I have to ask, or I will never know! 馃檨
speedster356 路
It's an oil filter Robo. But they also make fuel filters.
Robo 路
Thanks, looks a bit big for a fuel filter I spose, but then again I have a Racor fuel filter with a water seperator on the Kombi, and it would be close to the size of the fram you have, I have to say it looks pretty dam fine on your engine!
Rob.......
Dasdubber 路
Where abouts can you get the kits for the rear linkage set up?
NigeType3 路
Dose the Framm filter add engine life?
Whats better the Framm or a full flow oil filter on a VW? I asume the framm uses gravity to return to the sump.
Also I love yer carbs supposidly I can get shorty manifolds to fit them into my type 3
what sort of performance are they going to offer you with you engine?
Thanks Nige
speedster356 路
The Fram filter runs in a parallel circuit with the engine lubricating system. There is only a percentage of oil that passes thru the filter. The return is at the inlet pressure less the DP (differental pressure) across the filter cartrage. I will most likely run a consealed oil cooler, I'll wait and see what the temps are like.
Whats the performace I expect....hehehe I don't think I want to go into that one......I've seen the other posts!!!!!
But
The engine is .....
new AS41 case
94 P/C
counterweighted crank
Engle 120 cam
044 heads ported-3 angle valve seats
1.25 ratio rockers
8.5 CR
12.5 lb flywheel
44 IDFs
and other stuff!!!
Yeah you can get short manifolds for the type 3.
[Dasdubber...the kit came from Vintage Vee Dubb Supplies in Campsie, also check with our sponser.
I think they would look a very clean setup on a Beetle.]

Beautiful, you do very nice work Speedster 356,and on a more personal note i think you may be suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(Acute variety),sadly its incurable but on a lighter note not terminable.Mick.馃檪馃檨馃榾馃槈
Craig Torrens 路
speedster356, you certainly have an attention to detail. Job well done:thumb
:thumb
is the filter costly, look good on my retro 36hp?
speedster356 路
The filters I bought on ebay, new decals are available from http://www.klasse356.com , great supplier!
Put a post on the buy and sell I'm sure there are a few about in Oz.
vw54 路
Ive seen this before...
bugmeister 路
Aren't the ramps on the Engle 120 too extreme to use 1:1.25 rockers?
speedster356 路
The next step is the replica Sebring exhaust system.
Same as this......
wibble 路
Yum! can't wait to see the finish product - you do good work, keep it up!!
speedster356 路
And here's the new aluminium engine bay with fuel lines and part oil cooler line installed.
vw54 路
wheres the PIC ???
speedster356 路
Let it load Dave!:beer
OvalGlen 路
Excellent Pete, I especially like the Engine bay.
Did you make a fancy alloy fan or just weld up the steel one for high rev security?
-
yes will be interesting to see how it goes.
I like your engine combination , should get the rear twitching.
KruizinKombi 路
Nice work Pete!!! It's going to look great! :thumb:thumb:thumb
It sounds like you've used some popular items - I'll be interested to hear how it goes on the dyno. It's going to be one speedy speedster! 馃槑馃槑馃槑

Grey 57 路
Looking sweet Pete :thumb:thumb
vw54 路
Dont forget the fuel line
OvalGlen 路
so why weld the fan?
speedster356 路
Oh yeah I forgot to answer that sorry Glen....
It was suggested to weld the crimped fin ends where they meet the side plates of the fan to add strength to the unit. The fan is "over driven" and could see very high speeds with an engine that is capable of RPM over 6K.
Fan go bang......hand in wallet!
I also had it dynamically balanced to less than G1.
OvalGlen 路
yes it has happened, Hell bug could tell you.
speedster356 路
OK so it's new exhaust time......I'm aiming to replicate the Sebring style exhaust as pictured below. I've posted in tech talk looking for some help in the primary and secondary lengths of the headers...need to start this week if I'm to meet the target of the nationals. Might just measure up a merged header and use those sizes I guess!!

Any slip joints....( heres where I worry you by saying - " what happens as the Motor expands ?)馃榾
Looks Great. Look forward to Hearing it on Saturday at Oran Park.
Maybe a recording is in order.:thumb
speedster356 路
There's plenty of length and bends to allow the pipes to expand and contract with the engine I think.
The pipes are pretty flexable when off.
I hope that it is not tooooooo loud though. 馃榾
pyr0 路
hell when ur driveing a car like that theres no such thing as too loud love the ride man
jboy82 路
er, that's a wicked exhaust style.
Where is/are the muffler/s from?
Josh.
speedster356 路
I think the mufflers are from a BMW with 2 in and 2 out 1 5/8" pipes. The single outlet I fabricated with 2 1/2" bends.
Hmmmm, just installed it and it'sLOUD.
I'll need to insert a removable baffle plate in the outlet to make it a bit more road friendly. But dosn't it sound great when it's wound up!
