Thanks Flying VW for the advice cos I was about to part with some cash. What about the emergancy channel 9? Supose it is just the same. What should I get? UHF as suggested.

Nobody uses 27mhz anymore. It has some advantages over UHF but if no one is at the other end why bother. I went to UHF in my caravanning trips many years ago and there is always someone to talk to.
Really any good quality brand set will do (Sawtron, Uniden, GME Electrophone, Philips) and get yourself a really good ground independent aerial set up with say a little unity gain aerial for ther burbs and say a 6db gain or a 9db gain for the open wide. The 6 or 9 doesnt work as well as say a 4.5db gain aerial in the built up areas and the longer whips can be a bloody pain. But on the open road if you need to reach out for a repeater etc, the higher the gain the better.
This advice is rule of thumb only. There are plenty of radio tech heads out there willing to give advice.
Good Luck

yep as old hutcho says go uhf ,have both in homebase as well as mobile and the old 27mhz is just a waste of space unless you use the sideband channels in a ssb set, you will find the uniden or the gme easier to find whist looking for one, phillips are an old radio now(have one for my base )they are now known by the simoco brand name. the emergency channel on uhf is channel 5 ,truckies is 40 🙂

Yeah as the others say but if travelling in a convoy the AM set is good for undulating country up to say 5ks whereas UHF is pretty much line of site, but longer distance. I use a cheap Dick Smith $69 unit which has worked quite good out in the dunes where the UHF was useless.
