nbturbo ·

For you Dan.Did some rubbing last night so demasked it for a pic this morning.Looks like the others are all gone. And 1 B4 I stripped it ready for paint.

billholmes ·

nice

vwtyp2 ·

looking good Gary.
nice hole in the roof. 🙂

nbturbo ·

The inside and in the sunroof opening has been done and have had the sound deadener sprayed on each wheel well. The outside and small items this weekend.nn[ Edited on 18-7-2005 by nbturbo ]

Dasdubber ·

Nice work Gary - lookin good. Are those Aurora Super Mag Plus spark leads you are using? If so, happy with them (if you have had the engine running that is)? I have just fitted the same to my type IV.

You have so much space in the engine bay - I am jealous that you can actually access your cylinder 1 and 3 plugs without removing the carbs like me!

Keep it up.
Alan

barls ·

looks good mate what size engine is it? what exhaust are you running any chance of some pics.

nbturbo ·

No Alan-just big reds from Repco.Have had motor running quite a few times to sort out the carbs. One was flooding,so fixed that and set them up using a gas analyser.Had the carbies overhauled about 4 years ago when this all began, and was a couple of years B4 I needed them. The Porsche fan makes the engine look so small in the bay, which will allow plenty of room for mounting the breather and accessories.Barls-it's a 2.7lt(82 by 103) and I have made 2 exhausts for it.First one was a Kombi extractor I modified, and was going to mount a hideaway muffler behind the right rear wheel.I didn't have enough room for a decent sized muffler,so made another like an original type. It's still a little loud,so will make some small resonators inside the tailpipes like the originals.I made the muffler from stainless and have had the whole lot ceramic coated in matt black to try and hide it a bit.The muffler hangs a little low under the rear panel and looked like a set of dogs nuts hanging out the back end in shiny stainless.

barls ·

nice mate i bet it will go like the wind. looks nice ill post some pics of my exhaust set up when i finish it but ive got a similar set up to the first at the moment

nbturbo ·

Barls-I thought you had finished your exhaust.Did you get heaters sorted yet? My heaters will be one of the last jobs B4 rego. Will make a shroud around the engine pipes and hook into the body tubes-but haven't figured yet where to get the fresh air from.Could probably hook into the body behind the rear seat and suck cabin air thru the shrouds.Must order another of the bilge pumps.Keep us up to date with progress.I like to see what is happening with all the Type4 conversions.

crewcabconnection ·

spray on sound deadener - what brands that, can I get it from the local paint shop or what? = Panel Vans = NOIZE

barls ·

ive got one set up but am changing it to suit what im doing with the rest of the car. ill be redoing the heater box shrouds to match the changes. ive got the bilge blowers installed but not much more.

nbturbo ·

CCC-I don't know much about the stuff-the painter tells me it's very expensive and they can mix it with the final colour so that it stays on a lot better.Main reason I wanted it used was under the fibreglass guards to stop the stars appearing on the outside from stones flicking up underneath.Painter thought it a good idea to do the body sections as well.

barls ·

it called underbody shotz or something similar ive got the same thing on my guards for the same reason

nbturbo ·

At last it's home again.Just over 4 weeks ago I started helping to get the colour on my Oval and today it was finished.Like so many others on here at the moment-let the assembly begin.Had the trimmer come tonight to plan what he is going to do about the head lining and how we are going to fit it.I want to change it a bit from original with how it fits around the rear window and will change how the hood bows attach to the body.

nbturbo ·

And the first bits to go on-not a good pic

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff - looking superb. I look forward to seeing the progress as it comes back together. You'll be happy once all those parts laying around the garage/house start to disappear - you'll have so much more room! :P

barls ·

keep it coming mate.

Flintstones ·

NB, are all your cars yellow!!
yellow oval
yellow new beetle
yellow xr8
Someone would think it was your favourite colour 😉
Great to see that you've got colour on the oval now.👍

nbturbo ·

Dino-I think you are correct-The Mitsi Van I still have- the yellow Oval I restored in the late 60's, early 70's,and still had it when I bought a nearly new Superbug in the same colour, and the GT I had for about 5 years from 1975.The purple Bug with my Oval was my brothers and in the back of the pic was my Dads 56 Oval in Manly Tan.I had a couple of other yellow ones as well, but only shit and not worthy of a mention.

debiasi4 ·

looking good gary cant wait for ride
adam

Flintstones ·

The XB GT looks niiiice!!!👍👍👍
Cheers

A4Play ·

I bet you love the colour Yellow

The bug's coming alone nicelynn[ Edited on 24-03-2005 by A4Play ]

Doug Sweetman ·

Yeah, go the XB 🙂 would love to do one of those with a strong Lexus v8 in it one day..... just to piss off the purists. But you would have to do a replica GT - the ridgy didge ones are worth MONEY now.

I was also wondering if you could clear up a couple of things...... the body shell is obviously an oval, but from the rear it has a superbug shape engine bay and elephants feet lights on super bug guards...... are you doing two cars at once, or is this a hybrid bug ?

Either way, I reckon the yellow looks great.

nbturbo ·

There were a couple of reasons for the change-firstly needed an engine cover with vents to let some more air in to feed the fan,and also some more room around the exhaust area.I have an Oval cover with vents grafted in,but it rubbed on the Porsche fan,so thought I would use one I had from a late Bug with the four vents. To use that, the rear panel needed to be changed,so got one with the bulge from a late Bug--both issues solved.Bought Aero guards which only take the big tail lights and thought about having them altered to get rid of the big lights-but thought may as well have the whole back end look uniform and late model. Will be using original Oval bumpers though with over riders. If I was to do a replica GT,I would use a motor like in my ute,but a 290 version.I put XA GT 4V heads on my XB,with a 780 double pumper and a got a new genuine cam and new extractors and centre mufflers from a Phase 3 for it.I fitted an FMX auto to it later on,but the cam was that wild, the lack of manifold vaccuum used to make it act up,so had to get a vacuum tank made like the Phase 3 had, which helped the brakes as well.It was a beast to drive and would pull hard to well over 140MPH.

Doug Sweetman ·

Yeah the muscle cars in those days were more like sledghammers than the 'refined' examples we see today....

So is this the body which is going on the Auto pan then ? It will be one of the most unique beetles in Aus....

nbturbo ·

Yes,thats correct.I check out all the sites around the globe, haven't been able to find one any where else thats been converted. If there was one somewhere, would have been good to chat about how it all went.

nbturbo ·

Put a few things on last night.

ruckus ·

Nice work!!!!

Very interested in your headlining ideas as I'll be putting in a steel sliding sunroof at some stage. I'm looking at something similar to Kim's (Golde60) with only the centre section covered, but not sure how well it will work with the sunroof.

Guage cluster looks awesome too btw

nbturbo ·

You can't do it with a steel slider-the side brackets are welded between the sunroof frame and the side frame on the body-head lining has to come from the sunroof opening down those claw like things above the door opening and at the front corners it has to cover the drain tubes.Do you have the sunroof yet? I would like to find some body who has one in original condition. When I cut this one from the donor-I can't remember how the headlining was attached under the rear sunroof frame.I am going to make up some hood bows and lower the whole headlining about 25mm across the whole roof from the opening- back.

nbturbo ·

Finished fitting the drain tubes for the sunroof-running them all out under the mudguards so will have no chance of water getting into the body cavities to start rusting.Colour is a bit daggy at night with flash.

h ·

wow that looks great n the tubes should of been factory yeah..
nice beetles

nbturbo ·

It's booked in tomorrow morning to get the headlining fitted-so had a few things to do first.Pulled the wiring loom and a 3 wire one I made up for the new interior light thru the drivers side, and thru the passenger side I pulled a 7 wire loom as well as another 3 wire for that side interior light.I am fitting an interior light each side from an NB Beetle as well as the sunglass holder and the passenger grab handle. The original drivers side loom took a bit of work to get down the A pillar with the sunroof drain tube in there as well.I have repositioned the hood lining bows a little lowerto make it easier to get the lining tight against the sides so that the interior lights wont make a big depression in the fabric.

nbturbo ·

With the hood lining bows-I drilled new holes into the body 20mm lower than where they fitted originally, and put some heat shrink over the ends and about 120mm long so that they will not rattle once installed.

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff Gary - can't wait to see the headliner pics!

nbturbo ·

Got it back tonight from the trimmer. Put a few pieces on for trial fit.Had him do the B pillars and under the side windows in vinyl like the originals.nn[ Edited on 9-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

barls ·

is that a vinyl or velour head trim mate cause it looks exactly like mine

ruckus ·

Wow thanks for the pics! You're right, I'm going to have to re-think many of the ideas I thought would work...

Ah well.

nbturbo ·

It's a velour-the closest fabric and colour to match my NB.

barls ·

thought it was the same as mine.

nbturbo ·

A bit more today-lengthened all the wires of the LH drive loom that were too short-used wires from a wreck's loom,to keep all the correct colour codes.Heat shrinked every joint to keep moisture out.Had the steering column chromed,so fitted it with my steering wheel.I am using an unusual flasher switch I found in one of my wrecks-it's black and has a head light flash built in-just pull back on the lever.Don't know yet if I will wire it up-probably more trouble than it's worth.Fitted my NB grab handle and sunglass holder.Drilled my first holes-to fit a passenger grab handle.Fitted the CD head unit as well.

nbturbo ·

Made small 3 wire looms up to fit the NB interior lights and cut and glued the headlining to fit them- got one each side, all in and wired ready to go.nn[ Edited on 22-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

nbturbo ·

Bought another CD player yesterday and fitted it.The other one was a Pioneer with a stacker and cassette I bought new some years ago, ready for this car-but decided that I won't drive it enough to need a stacker, and definately won't need a cassette player,so bought a single disc VDO head unit with all the correct wires for running amps etc.Everything on the dash now is VDO.Will be able to fit the amp under the back seat now where the stacker was going.Did some more wiring for the fuel pumps and the neutral start switch and reverse lights. Will have to run a loom in the tunnel to hook up to the trans shift lever. Will put the starter switch on the floor just behind the trans lever.nn[ Edited on 23-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

nbturbo ·

Started fitting the sunroof tonight-got it all in and working-will have to grease the cables and adjust the guides, then pull the slider out, mark where all the seals fit, glue everything on and slide it back in.Will be finished this weekend. Then move onto something else. Was asked today if it will be finished by April next year-it, along with the NB could be doing the wedding car bit.nn[ Edited on 24-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

Flintstones ·

Looking Great Gary :thumb:thumb:thumb

Do you have instructions on how to fit the roof and get it operating correctly or are you just a wiz and have fitted them before?

Cheers

P.S. where did you get the drain tubes from?

vwtyp2 ·

love that sunroof Gary.
do you want to sell it back?
thinking about putting it in my Oval. :P

nbturbo ·

Dino-bit of both I guess. When I was an apprentice mechanic,we sold an XY GT Falcon new with a sunroof, which was giving some trouble. No body wanted to touch it,so guess who got the job of fitting some new cables.I remember spending a lot of time trying to figure it all out and was successful in getting it to close correctly. When I got this one from Dan and I started to strip it out-I thought to myself-seen all this B4 somewhere and realised they are the same set up.It's all piss easy to figure out,but I found a Type 3 workshop manual at a garage sale and it has a section on adjustments in it-some of it's not quite correct, but still a good how to guide.Dan,all I can offer you now is a rectangle shaped piece of an Oval roof-sorry.Dino-drain tubes are just 13mm clear plastic tube.13mm is slightly too big,so smeared some silicone over the steel pipe and used some of those "O" type clamps that you crimp up with pincers.Got them into position then clamped them real hard-didn't look like moving and once the silicone dried-super tight.Where they go thru the body, used grommets with a 13mm hole and some dripper system elbows-pushed the clear tube thru the grommet and then pushed the elbow back thru-so no way any water can ever leak into the car.nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

vw54 ·

Gary

Are you going to put the Type 3 auto under this project ???

nbturbo ·

Yes Dave. The Auto pan will be finished at the blasters and painters tomorrow.Got it done in Graphite Grey the same as the original one I did for this car. It's going to be full on assembly now for some months.nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

vw54 ·

This will B an Auto Crusier then

nbturbo ·

NO-an auto Rocket.

vw54 ·

Dont like some of the things you have done ( but thats only me ) Looks great and heaps of work done lots of mods and with a FULL auto as well
Have you done anything to the auto box ( gee there fun to lift in n out of the chassis arnt they ) F a r k there heavy I did my Auto Type 3 about 7 or so times had a bit of GUNK stuck stuck in the oil pump gallieries n was blocking flow to allow the box to change when it warmed up ( it was a pig to find that problem )

Is that the Porsche Yellow colour you have painted the shell

So do you need an RTA ?? engineers certificate or equivelant in SA to register this car with all the cuts n weld done on the chassis. Was he / she pleased with your work it looked pretty good to me

nbturbo ·

Actually spoke to a bloke in Adelaide today about the Auto-He has done quite a few from Kombis that have had engine changes(Subies etc ) and he modifies the front clutch and mods the valve body for pressure changes. Will take it down in 2 weeks for him to do his stuff. The colour is Double Yellow- exactly the same as my NB.That's the look I am after-a pair of twins but nearly 50 years apart. Was he/she pleased with it-what do you mean???nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

Flintstones ·

Thanks for the info Gary and the useful tips,
When do you expect the body to be mounted on the pan?
Cheers

nbturbo ·

Dino-Think I will wait till the auto comes back and refit that first.I will get all the trans mounts that I made cad plated while it is away,so will be soon after that. Will bolt the motor up as well to get all the pipe work and electrics sorted that will be in the pan.I will need to make a loom to go in the tunnel for the neutral start, reverse lights, starter button and for the high pressure fuel pump mounted near the auto.I think I will make an aluminium panel to mount on the tunnel, behind the shift lever, which will have the starter button and the power window switches. This way can get away with only needing 2 switches. When you get around to doing your roof-take plenty of pics.I didn't take any of where all the seals were mounted, now I am finding it hard to work out where they fit. When I stripped mine,I put everything into boxes and thought I had everything safe.Months later I remember picking up this funny looking plastic thing on the floor, had never seen it B4,so put it in the junk box. When I started to reassemble, the book shows these plastic things that clip into the end of the aluminium rails and lock into a tab way back in the body to give support.I couldn't find them-so thought mine must not have had them.A couple of days ago,was going thru the junk box,and there was one of the plastic things.I now have to make something for the other one.I will bet that there is no way you could get another one anywhere.Found thisnn[ Edited on 26-8-2005 by nbturbo ]

Flintstones ·

Shame your missing the clip, I've got 2 but of course I'll be needing those.
I gather you've tried all the O/S suppliers?

Maybe you could try a Ford GT shop, as they have Goldie roofs fitted back in the day, and as you've got a goldie, well you just never know
Cheers

seagull ·

dont forget to fit two seals to the diff * where the converter fit in *

nbturbo ·

Thanks-I'm on to it.

nbturbo ·

Modified some 66 wiper arms to fit the Oval tonite.(like the shiny stainless look instead of the frosted silver of the originals)Drilled out the rivets to separate the arms.Bent the ends of the arms, where they push on the little rollers,to give more tension for the blades on the screen.Because the Ovals park on the LH side,I bent one arm the opposite way for the drivers side to park properly.I also rivetted the bit the blade attaches to,and will just use a stainless split pin to keep it on. Was going to fit a 2 speed 12volt motor, but it's a bit tight in there with the guages I have fitted.Decided to keep the 6volt single speed.Tried a few different ways to drop the voltage, but couldn't get them to park because they were going too fast. Finally found some ceramic resistors(they are marked 10amp-22 ohms) and settled on using 3 wired together-wipers go at a good speed and still park OK.

Flintstones ·

How'd you go with the sunroof clip NB?
Any luck with the GT restoration shops?

Wipers look great:thumb

Cheers

nbturbo ·

No joy there at all. Will make something for the job. When I put it all back together B4 it went for paint-I didn't have them in,and it worked perfectly-wonder how important they are???.Have got another small delay-wasn't 100% happy with the new headliner-bloke couldn't fix the couple of faults-so have ripped it all out for another go,so won't need the pin for a while I guess. Decided that while it is out, will fit some small speakers into the headliner in each front corner.Made some aluminium brackets last night and will rivet them to the body so I can fit the speakers after the lining goes back in.

Flintstones ·

I'd say that they will be fairly important as this is what will keep the rail in place whilst your driving around, as well as vibration.
The last thing you want is for the rail to move and dislodge your roof panel and for it to rattle and leak.

With the speaker in the top corner, you will find that it will drive you crazy (as well as giving you a headache) as you won't be able to have a decent staging of your stereo.
The higher frequency will overpower all your other speakers almost making them useless.

Hope I haven't ruined your thoughts.....
Cheers

nbturbo ·

No-always on the lookout for info from someone who has tried it B4.I will still fit the brackets B4 the headlining goes in-but will do a dummy test with them up there B4 I cut the headlining. Thanks for that.

nbturbo ·

Got it back with another headlining fitted-got a good job done this time-- and have fitted all the sunroof seals and it's in and working. After I adjusted everything,it was sliding pretty easy with just a small feeling of drag in the guides,so I put some cardboard between the guides and the headlining and sprayed a small amount of silicone spray into the guides, wow, does it glide home easy now.If anybody is playing with one of these and is having any issues with adjustments, contact me and I can help out, have got on top of it now.nn[ Edited on 25-9-2005 by nbturbo ]nn[ Edited on 25-9-2005 by nbturbo ]

Flintstones ·

Looks Sweet NB
Cheers

nbturbo ·

At last-just picked up my pan after it went in on 8th August for a blast and paint. It was ready last Friday, but it looked like it had been painted by a blind bastard,so had it done again. Can get into action again.Picked up some front buckets last week from a Mitsubishi Starion, so won't have to wreck mine now. Will strip them down and get them covered in black leather as well as the back seat.Have ordered the leather with the perforations for the centres and normal stuff on the edges-same as my NB.Looks like this weekend will be for swapping over the front and rear suspensions from the original pan.

nbturbo ·

Swapped the front beam over. Got a new Master Cylinder and made up new steel pipes and reservoir lines-need to keep the brake stuff on the other pan.Pulled out all the bolts I screwed into holes B4 blasting and run a tap thru them all with some some thread compound.Stripped down my Country Buggy front beam and took it in yesterday for blast and paint. Will put it back onto the other pan when done.

[ Edited on 14-10-2005 by nbturbo ]

Turbo54 ·

Pan looks sweet! Are you coming down on the 30th?
T54

pete wood ·

great work on the frame horns. with a lick of paint they almost look factory. :thumb

nbturbo ·

Yes,I will be down. The only day each year where I know exactly where I will be.

nbturbo ·

Just finished my 2 rear trims-made new cards and spacers to get the speakers away from the body. Will fit some dynamat B4 they go in.Used some chrome outside trims from a late Bug-cut them to length and made up some metal threads to attach them.Used some VDO speakers, but paimted the covers grey to match.

[ Edited on 17-10-2005 by nbturbo ]

mscabrio ·

Can't wait to see this finished, it is looking great! Shame you couldn't have used the instruments and steering wheel from a NB, that would have looked wicked! When you finish, are you going to buy the oval window inserts for your NB ??????

nbturbo ·

Yes- thought about the steering wheel.Spotted one at Autopro the other day-looked a like the NB one.And no-like the NB just the way it is.

vwtyp2 ·

hey Gary, where did you get the passenger side sun visor from?
I'm after just the arm without the visor to mount a Tacho on.

nbturbo ·

Vintage Parts California. It's their passenger mounting bracket.I drilled out the rivets and turned the rod over and fitted some new rivets,so it can then go on our passenger side.Made up a small aluminium plate the same shape with the 3 screw holes which goes on first.I got it with a whole heap of stuff-someone here may sell them.I think it was about $8 US.You could probably make something similar out of some 3mm aluminium.

nbturbo ·

Not much progress of late-still waiting for the doors, front and rear lids and the 4 guards to be finished. They are all painted, but have some minor blemishes,so he is redoing them-but starting to wonder which century.Drew this logo up and had a signwriter do a heap for me in yellow and blue.Think it represents what an early one looks like using the NB style logo.

Fossil ·

Sweet 😏

nbturbo ·

Well at last the rest of my bits are finally finished.Got a call this morning to come and pick up the doors and front and rear lids. The guards only need to be polished and should be done by the weekend.Got both lids on tonight and adjusted and all gaps are good.Fitted some of the badges as well.

barls ·

nice mate im going up to play with mine and ill get some pics how the whole heater set up is done cause i remember you asked a while ago

nbturbo ·

Thanks-keen to check it out.

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff Gary - looking absolutely fantastic! Its such a nice feeling reinstalling all the new/renewed components onto a freshly painted body!

nbturbo ·

That's for sure-had forgotten what it felt like.I know one thing for sure-next one I do-I will be doing the body work as well. With this one I thought to save heaps of time,I would have someone else do the body while I did all the mechanical stuff.Well I have done the motor, the pan,all the suspension and stuff, and then did another pan and modified it for the auto, and still finished long B4 the body was done and still run a business to pay for it all.Any way will get into it now and enjoy the refit of everything.

063bug ·

Looks really good..... keep up the hard work

Anirok ·

WOW!!!
looking great!!!
😁

nbturbo ·

Nearly ready to drop the body onto the pan-but had to cut a trap door under the back seat to clear the front of the auto and give access to the front band adjuster. If I turn this panel thru 180 degrees it fits back perfectly-need to weld some sides to it with a flange all around, then can make it removeable.

WABaja ·

.

You're doing a Beautiful job on this car... I've got a lot of respect for someone that puts that much work in...
Whilst I'm not a huge fan of late model panels on an early bug, but I can appreciate the look you're going for and the effort you're putting in...
First time I've seen this thread, but I'll be watching with a smile from now on...
Keep up the good work, really lovely looking car... Well done..

lookin fab Gary...cant wait to see it turn out

foxy_fuchsia ·

love it, very schmick!!

nbturbo ·

Got another instalment of bits last night-both back guards and 1 front-get other guard and mirror heads tonight.Couldn't resist-had to bolt them on.

mscabrio ·

One things for sure noone can say that you have no imagination ........ it's coming together really well now, looking forward to seeing the final project.

You have combined my two favorite bug details ...... oval window and elephant foot taillights !

nbturbo ·

Thanks-I'm a bit like that as well, and I have used the clear ones with the small coloured covers over the globes.I'm also a bit partial to the 4 slot engine cover too(but like the W lids the most).I have a W lid with vents in it that came on the Oval.I might see if I can get a set of clear lights for the back of the NB as well.

Dasdubber ·

Whoo-hoo!! Awesome stuff!

nbturbo ·

Got the front ones as well.Need to make a spreader bar now so I can lift it all onto the pan.

mscabrio ·

nbturbo wrote:.I might see if I can get a set of clear lights for the back of the NB as well.

I have got clear tail lights and changed the rear fog light to a clear reverse light on my Cabrio and it looks a lot cleaner

nbturbo ·

No-I didn't need it to be auto, but thought that almost everything else had been tried on a Beetle except this-so why not.My NB is auto and it's a dream to drive,so the Oval should be the same.It should have plenty of power,so stop light sprints should be fun.

nbturbo ·

mscabrio-did you ever post any pics of the back of yours?I don't think I have seen any on an NB.Have seen plenty on the XR Ford utes and they look good-will have to get a set for that as well-bloody cars-they try their best to keep you poor.

[ Edited on 3-1-2006 by nbturbo ]

blutopless2 ·

here is a pic of the rear.

nbturbo ·

Nice.In that pic,it looks like you have changed your exhaust.

nbturbo ·

Had a day off today and put the body back on the pan.Had a few minor things to tidy up first, then lifted it with one felt sling thru the door openings.Made a small block of wood for each side and covered them with carpet to keep the sling off the headlining and stop it crushing the metal strip that holds the lining. With all the mods to the pan for the auto,I managed to have the motor sitting about 15mm too low at the back-easy enough to fix-just have to modify the bell housing mounts to compensate. It all fits that well,it looks like it came from the factory.

nbturbo ·

1 more

Dasdubber ·

Very tasty indeed - I love it!!

vw54 ·

Gary

The cars looking great is it nearly ready for regristration

Have you thought about widening the bumpers by about 3 or 4 inches or so to match the guards. You have to do this from the center and moove the mount holes as well.

It would look trick but a bit of stuffing around but after all its only money

pete wood ·

Excellent stuff. Can't wait to see it all finished. I'm particularly looking forward to hearing about how the auto goes. You might start a trend of some sort. 😉

nbturbo ·

Thanks Fellas- I'm keen to give it a hiding.I cut and shut a couple of front bumpers to see what it looked like, B4 I had these rechromed.Looked odd to me-too wide and too thin.

vw54 ·

We did some a few years ago.... makes the car look F A T T E R

maybe just the blades on ther own would look better when wider

But its yr choice.

nbturbo ·

Took some of the auto in position and thru the hole in the back seat area-and my guide pegs still in position for locating the body in the right place when I lowered it onto the pan.Can also see the rear bars I made up to stiffen up the frame horns. When I am happy with it all, will send all the bars and brackets away to be cad plated.

barls ·

looks better every-time i look keep up the good work mate

Flintstones ·

Looking Superb NB!!👍👍

nbturbo ·

Dino-whats the go with yours-any progress??

nbturbo ·

Got a couple of hours in last night-been too hot to even go into the shed for the last week.Back on it's wheels now,but think I need to lift it a spline at the back-just a little too low.I have all the VW tools to align the back wheels,so will give it a go after I get it sitting at the correct height. Finally finished the auto dipstick tube.Took ages to decide where to actually put it.I bought it into the engine on the LH side.Had to lengthen it 100mm so it could just come into the engine bay.Had to shorten a dip stick from an auto Kombi and scribe the level marks-all turned out OK.The hardest bit was making sure the tube didn't hit against the body under hard acceleration-made this bracket with a rubber panel to allow for some flex.To prevent any trans fluid being blown into the engine bay under pressure,I have made the dip stick an air tight seal inside the tube, and will weld an 8mm breather pipe high up on the outer tube, and fit a filter and drain tube to vent behind the LH back wheel.Got the hand brake working as well-had to make some extension tubes to go over the original tubes coming from the pan.I had to reposition these during the mods,so didn't know how long to leave them-I was 85mm too short.

Alex Holzl ·

VERY VERY VERY NICE! makes me wanna pull my car apart and start again!

Great work!

Adjusted and aligned all the steering system.Screwed all the fuel fittings into the tank and fitted it.Found a grinding feeling in the steering at the straight ahead postion-searched for ages and couldn't find the cause.Had the tank out again and saw a very small scratch mark in the new paint-just where the column would be.I had fitted a centre shaft from a later Beetle and it was just catching.Moved everything further into the car by about 20mm and it's all OK now.

nbturbo ·

Got it registered last week so I could enter it in a car show here as a daily driver.Have got it and my "64 on Seasonal registration, they can be done for 3 months at a time without having to pay for a reinstatement fee.Still haven't got the doors back together yet.Had 3 of my VW's and my ute in the 'Family group" catagory.Don't know how I went-they were so late doing trophies-had to get all the cars home,so didn't hang around.

Great stuff NB.

So how she drive with the T4 and the auto?

Cheers

That looks great!

Jus love that exhaust...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumb

Absolutely shuperb! Great work! :bounce

Thought I would give an update-It's almost there.Got the auto and motor back in,finished all the wiring, made a switch for the auto's kickdown, drilled and tapped the 4 intake manifolds for a vacuum source for the auto etc.Just finished swapping the CV joints onto the auto axles and have fitted one side(had enough for today) Lifted the rear suspension up about 30mm,was a bit too low and couldn't get rid of the excessive negative camber at the lower setting-all looks good now.Auto gear changer is in and all adjusted and hooked the small selector indicator lights into the dash light system.Only need to bleed the brakes and fill the auto and I can start it and make it move.Still waiting for my doors to come back from the painter-will phone tomorrow to hurry them up.

Dasdubber ·

C'mon Gary - we need some more pics mate! 😀

vw54 ·

Looking great so its up to the Test drive stages ??

nice job... keep the pictures coming. Love the idea of the drains running directly into the wheel well.... very clever 👍

nbturbo ·

Finished everythng in the engine bay(except for chucking away the Webers and fitting the injection)It runs like a bag of shit when cold-but comes to life when it's been running for a couple of minutes.I have tried everything I can think of to make it run smooth when I start it.Been out in the lane along side of my place-Geezus it feels like a rocket.I will have to get used to the auto-with the modified convertor,it seems to be sluggish when I pull away-then it seems to take up and all hell breaks loose. Will get on top of it once I can drive it on the street.

Very nice work!

I have to stop looking at this stuff....getting too many ideas for my Oval. :P

nbturbo ·

Made this to go over the hole to clear the front of the auto. Will use some Nutserts to hold it in place. Will need to tidy up the welds a bit.Can cut and shut the seats now to clear this panel.

tasty, tasty stuff. why does it make me feel like eating cheese? 😏

So is it all regoed or what?

nbturbo ·

Yes-I registered it for 3 months back in February to make sure everything would be OK.Just need to redo it when I have it finished.I have all my old cars on "seasonal rego"-which means if they are expired for more than 90 days-don't have to go thru all the bullshit and pay a reinstatement fee.Oh,and cheese is not healthy according to my wife-but I still love it.

nbturbo ·

A bit of progress-finished all the carpet-ended up doing it all myself.Cut everything out then had it edged same as done for house carpet squares-used a black thread with a siver fleck-turned out really good.A big help was getting some spray glue from a trimmer and used an old spare spray gun I had-saved heaps of time and made the job real easy. Finally decided on how I am doing the belt line seals for the 1 piece windows.Tried heaps of different shape rubbers-settled on using original outer rubbers.Drilled out the rivets from the new kits and used both side rubbers on the 1 door-just glued them straight to the door.So used the LH one on the front part of the right door-cut the length to fit, turned around and joined them with some O ring glue.Have ordered another complete set to do the other door.Just used what came with the kit for the inner scraper.Made up a stainless piece for the outer door edge. These used to available in the early days for an armrest when we were allowed to drive with an arm out the window.Needed a bit more shiny now the original stainless mouldings can't be used.Made up front and rear parcel trays from MDF and trimmed for somewhere to mount the speakers.A while back I stripped out all the original seats and borrowed a glass bead cabinet and did all the frames, then painted everything in satin black.Thay have been in Adelaide for a while now getting the black leather treatment. He is pretty slow but does the best work-will be ready mid November.

Seats are finally finished for it-will try to get to Adelaide next week to pick them up.I bought another set of throttle bodies and they arrived today-will get started tonight fitting it all.

nbturbo ·

Progressing with injection-pulled out all the fuel lines for the Webers and had to make new throttle rods. They supplied some extruded aluminium for the fuel rails, but I cannot find anything to screw into the ends for the barbed fittings to screw into.Had to machine up some aluminium plugs to fit tight in the holes and weld them in.Got one side done-beautiful-even drilled and threaded one end so I can screw in a guage if I need to check fuel pressure.Buggered up the other one-tried to weld on some 10mm flat for the pressure regulator to screw into. Will cut it off and try again.Drilled and threaded one T/B below the butterfly for the air temp sensor to screw into(9/16 UNF)Have got to find a place for the water temp sensor yet. Will be using this dizzy-it's from a 244 Volvo and I've machined it down and fitted the VW drive tang-takes the same cap as a 009,even looks like one.May go with a crank angle sensor down the track.

kroozzn63 ·

oooooooooooo they look nice

nbturbo ·

still fitting stuff for the injection-took a break and started fiting the seats.Had to put the fronts back together and fit the hold back rubber for the rear seat.Had to modify the rear parcel tray/speaker panel. The spots on the seats are the perforations in the leather-must have been caught by the flash.

[ Edited on 29-4-2007 by nbturbo ]

nbturbo ·

Was planning on having the motor going with the injection on today-best laid plans????? The engine bay is all finished though-everything where it's meant to be.Have mounted the ECU under the back seat, but want the relay's to be tidy,so will get 3 of those plastic terminal holders tomorrow and then the relay's just plug into them.Having some trouble trying to find air cleaners for the T/Bodies.Injection Perfection reckon they used to sell them, but are unable to do so anymore.Pisses me off that they can sell the T/B's,but can't supply a fairly important part of the system. They claim that the T/B's are a direct replacement for the Webers and the cleaners should fit-but they go nowhere near fitting.May have to make some top and bottom plates from aluminium that take a common filter.

[ Edited on 27-5-2007 by nbturbo ]

Looking really nice Gary - it would be awesome to leave the TB velocity stacks exposed (looks cool) but I can see why you want to track down the filters. :thumb

nbturbo ·

I can't believe how long this car has taken to get to this stage.Have been fairly short on time to devote to it lately-but progressing with the injection.Trying to get everything close to set up the ECU has been a bit of a headache.Started of with 20.5 lbs/hr injectors and almost no manifold vacuum for the MAP-so couldn't get it lean enough to be any good.I made a small ally manifold and threaded it for the 4 vacuum hoses and one outlet for the MAP and fuel reg.I fitted 4 one way check valves and now have a good/constant vacuum reading at idle.I will mount it under the car out of sight if it all works OK and just run the 4 small hoses out of the engine bay to it.I also changed the injectors to 18.25 lbs/hr and it runs really good thru the whole range and now idles and starts good.I am taking it tomorrow to have the ECU rechipped-so hoping it all goes OK.If he can't get it right,I will then get a Haltec and a laptop and have a go at it myself.Made some new air filter bases from some 6mm ally and used my original Weber filters and tops.I had to offset the bases 4mm so they would clear the fuel rails.

Turbo54 ·

No return lines? I was oing to do it this way but warned off it. It is meant to be great if you are constantly on it but a bit of a pig just idling around. Also the fuel gets hot. Let me know how you go.
T54

nbturbo ·

I have return lines-it's a normal supply/return system with a regulator.

vw54 ·

Gary hows the project going

Have you sorted the auto out

vassy66T1 ·

Great effort!!

If no one sells it just make it...!
It's the persistence despite the constant adversity that makes it a memorable challenge.
I'm sure I won't be that philisophical when nothing has been going right mind you...

Appreciate the photos and detail.

nbturbo ·

There isn't too much about this project that I will ever forget. It's been a full on learning experience.I can now TIG weld aluminium and stainless,do some basic machining on a lathe, basic machining on a milling machine, made all the carpets and door trims and helped with the final headlining to go in and did about 90% of all the mechanicals, all of the elecrical and body assembly.Bonus is that I now have some good machinery that I may have never thought of buying(good lathe, milling machine,TIG welder,MIG welder and a 2 post car hoist) I don't think I would ever do one again with the detail I have put into this one.Might be a different story 12 months down the track. The auto was never a problem-have only driven it once-but it worked OK-did everything it is supposed to do.Still having issues with the injection-trying to get the fuel maps right thru the whole rev range.Have tried 2 different ECU's,Haltech and Kalmaker-runs best on the Kalmaker

vw54 ·

Have you thought about a single throttle body

I think you will find a big difference

We had quads on the drag car and could never get the tune right too many mechanical variations

How come you have only driven it once ???

nbturbo ·

I am finally driving it and it's awesome.Pissed around with the Delco(Kalmaker) for 2 days with no joy,so bought a Haltec and spent 8 hours with that and still no go.Just managed to burn out Auto starters like there was no tomorrow. They are a bit weak in design-the front bush is only 9mm wide and fairly thin and I managed to flog out 3 different starters during this ordeal.I ordered a High Torque starter from CIP1 in the US and it arrived in 6 days(unreal service from these people each time I use them).I had to modify the shock tower bar I made because it was too close to the main terminal. All fitted and it's all good now.Any how I gave up(My knowledge of how this is done is now a big 0)and took the car to Adeaide to a Haltec agent. He had it for a week and got it running like a dream.I learnt a valuable lesson here-save the heartache right from the start and use an expert. The injectors are on their limit, but the motor makes no more power after 6200 because of the crappy muffler and really mild cam,so they will be fine.I have since changed the exhaust to a set of extractors I made some years back and managed to squeeze a muffler behind the drivers rear wheel-it's a little loud at idle but sweet when pushed.I will have to run the motor in a bit,but does it get up and go and the auto is awesome-gear shifts are really tight.Just have a few finishing touches to do- front and rear wheel alignments, fit some inertia reel belts, finish fitting the seats, get some whitewalls done and have it booked in end of October to get any paint blemishes fixed from the respray.

mackaymanx ·

Good to hear the auto is working well, I really wanted to know it could handle to extra power. Did you have any trouble getting a good manifold vacuum signal for the modulator valve?

nbturbo ·

yes and no-had no signal of any value at first-so fitted 4 plastic elbows(4mm) to each manifold, threaded one end on each, screwed in a small plastic screw to each one and cut it off flush. Then drilled each one with a 20thou hole and connected them all to a T piece and then to the modulator and the fuel pressure reg.Have a good stable 12 to 14 at idle and it's all working OK.

debiasi4 ·

good to see you happyand behind the wheel pity i missed you at work the other day i am looking forward to going for a ride
i guess you will have it down for the show in november see you then
adam

nbturbo ·

If it wasn't for you blokes,I would still be dreaming about driving it.Thanks for putting me onto Brian-nothing more to say.

nbturbo ·

Am going to try this for an extra oil cooler.Machined the ally mounting bracket to take a Type4 cooler and OG seals.I have a sandwich plate with thermostat to go under the filter and this will mount on the LH side on the Bus rear traction bar I have fitted.Hoses will only be 400mm long.I have a heater assist fan from a Bus-I have cut one outlet off and blocked it and will mount it up under the LH side alongside the trans. Will mount it on the rear shock tower brace.Made an ally cover to go over the oil cooler with a snorkle the same size as the fan,and use some flexi hose to join them. The fan will be switched from the Haltec ECU.

Flintstones ·

NBT, why didn't you hook up both the outlets from the fan to the cooler?
That setup won't be too effective as the air is only going to pass through the bottom half of the cooler if you know what I mean.

The Oval is looking good by the way.
Cheers

nbturbo ·

With the other outlet still there-it is just too big to fit in there.I hooked it up to a battery on the bench with the hose in place-don't think there will be any trouble with it working-there is a massive amount of air passing thru the cooler.

nbturbo ·

I have put a few miles on it now and it's definately a new experience. It is fairly harsh to ride in with the stiff suspension and the heavy engine mounts as well as the Bus rear bar.I have a little preload on the rear bar to take some strain off the front trans mount during full throttle gear shifts. The 2 to 3 upshift hangs on a bit when pushed hard,so I will re check all the line pressures when I get a bit of spare time.I have to take it back to Adelaide this weekend to get the ECU redone on the Dyno and fix a starting issue.I have blown all the insides from my new High Torque starter from the States. The ECU is giving too much timing advance while cranking and I had a serious backfire which shredded all the reduction gears and the Bendix.CIP1 do not sell parts for them-so I bought another one. After trying many places in the US for parts,I finally found an agent here that sell the starters as well as keeping parts.I finished the extra oil cooler and fitted it along with the sandwich adaptor.Only ended up with the 2 oil lines 200mm long and made a stainless heat sheild to protect them from the exhaust.Still have to mount the cooling fan.I plan on taking it to the VW show in Adelaide 18th Nov and then go to Melbourne the following weekend-if everything goes to plan.

bond ·

have you done any video yet of the 2.7 type 4 hauling on the road?!?!?!?!

im keen!!

nick

nbturbo ·

No vids of it on the road.I have been to Adelaide and Melbourne with it for the VW shows. Can't believe the fantastic cars that turned up at both shows-we have world class stuff being done here in Oz.Was still having trouble starting it and after trashing 2 new Hi Torque starters and flogging out another Auto VW starter, the bloke doing the ECU finally figured what was happening.I took it back last week and he has fitted an ignition module and coil from a VP V8 Holden and timed it differently-the timing stays at 0 until it's running. All is good now.Was too frightened to take it out before, because there was always a chance the starter would shit itself B4 it fired.Took it to a car show here yesterday and drove it around a bit-very impressed.Have had whitewalls grooved into the tyres for something different. Can now spend some time on getting my Drag Car going.

56astro ·

DROP IT

👍

Nice ride.

BTW
What ECU are you using?

vwtyp2 ·

dropped

nbturbo ·

Now that I have all the issues with starting it fixed-I have put a Hi Torque starter back into it,and was wondering what everybody has done for the bottom nut.The original 17mm nut is impossible to get at with a spanner,so I found one from the front trans mount-15mm spanner size with the 10mm thread-but still can't get at it properly.Decided I had to make something-so came up with this.Milled a 13mm hex onto some 16mm stainless, drilled and threaded it and now a piece of piss to tighten.
