Hi les05
If Your gauge is working but giving u false readings I would clean all electrical fittings (at the sender) and make sure of a good earth
Still no good rip out the sender unit and check
To test gauge have some one watch the gauge while u take the wires of the sender and hold them together with the igninition on of course
Hope this helps

I have two 72 supers the fuel guage is in the speedo but is seperate. I found on two occasions that it was the vibrator on the back. Bypass this with a test lamp to test guage But only momentarily otherwise youll burn out guage. Guage should go hard to the right instantly. Now test vibrator your test lamp should just light up ie very dim. Its easy. Trev

thanx guys.had guage checked no good.got brand new sender in it.still didn't work.guage started going straight to full then just wouldn't work at all.this happened on the way to auto lekkys.have another on the way.see how this one goes

it could just be the voltage stabilizer in the guage these some times die and are hard to get now but most vdo can do a solid state conversion on it for about $200 other than that try to get a second hand one

be aware that the 72 model guage is ozzy only, the factory used local content on this one...a std german style guage needs tweeking to fit..your 72 should be a flat black face..unless already changed for a german style, good luck with the repairs cheers steve

Yeh thanks guys.instrument guy here showed me they are the same as the ones on the early ford capris, escorts.the stabiliser that is.he also told me they are only equivalent to a 5 watt fuse.told me you can buy the stabiliser new for $50.for another $100 he will fix the guage as well.
