should I? Is it worth it?

Thinking of selling my fasty as I am struggling with scraping together extra cash for a first housing deposit.

Dont want to get rid of the fasty, but I feel that it is kinda a selfish little hobby that I keep driving two cars. (while my wife uses PT)

I have had the fasty in the members ride section, but I will attach a pic to jog peoples memories.

I have not posted in the for sale section yet, as I am looking for some feedback as to what I may be able to recuperate on her and I dont want to piss off the mods.

I have spent well over 9 grand on her, though I know I will probably never see that fully recouped. She is a fine, registered and rwc'd daily.

If it was me I'd keep the fasty, she looks like a sweet ride. Sell the wifes PT instead and let her drive the other car. You'll get more for the PT anyway, as silly as it is people think they're cute.😏

killakornkobb ·

i think PT in this case is public transport...

twoguns ·

sorry i wouldnt sell it, but i know someone i think who would buy it and love it and cherish it.

Paddo ·

yeah PT aint no cruiser....its the train:cry

well Ryan and i had this delema recently, but a bit different as ryan has 5 cars and 2 car loans, and i have 2 cars a rolling shell and a car loan but we decided that ryan was going to sell 2 cars, the ones he didnt really care about as much as the others and im trying to get rid of my rolling shell, but it wont cover our loans whish was the only thing stopping us getting a house, but the car with the big loan we decided not to sell because it was the only new car we had and we will have it for years, and he is keeping 2 hobby cars.

i guess wehat im trying to get at is, keep the car, its your baby hang in there and you will get the deposit eventually.

Good luck
Danielle

I was faced with the same dilemma last year and kept my ultra rare GTI. I reckon keep it, cos if you feel the way I do about my car, it will kill you to sell it on while thinking what potential buyers might do to it. Besides, in the big scheme of things, the money you would get for your car would be an insult to its condition, and wouldnt contribute that much to your deposit anyway. With house prices so high, that extra cash wont go too far.

Any help?

Nice car. My favourite fastie to date!!!

pete wood ·

goodbye PT, you'll get most of ya deposit just by selling that.

Paddo ·

mmm it is a tough one, its also because if I do keep it, I just know that I wont be able to stop buying things for it like steering wheels and new carpets and wheels etc which I dont need but just have to have if u know what I mean.

Having a car you love is just an excuse to spend money on it, cuz there is always ways to improve it in your eyes.

I feel that the only way to get the money together will be to sell. Its bloody hard this saving caper! and two reg's and 2 insurances is just not smart when u only need one car.nn[ Edited on 11-7-2005 by Paddo ]

akean1 ·

that looks like one of those cars that people say "yeah i used to have a beautifull one of those, wish i never sold it"
you'll spew if you do, but someone else will be happy

How much enjoyment will you get from the house? I had a house on 3/4 acre once, spent all my extra time working to pay for this and that for it, like carpets etc. I was working myself into the ground wondering how I was going to make ends meet. In the end it didn't matter because the bank took it when the ex and I separated. Now I just rent, finally have my kombi and the only stress I have is who to get parts from. I get a smile every time I walk out the front and see her, andI still drive her everyday to and from work, 150km round trip. The best stress relief ever. It will be your biggest regret if you sell her to buy the house and something goes wrong. I'd wait to save the money, there's always a nice house around the corner.👍

On the 2 rego and insurance thing, have you considered putting it on club plates and driving it less every year? Makes for some cheap motoring by comparison. That way you could just drive it weekends, and the money you save could go into mods or savings...nn[ Edited on 11-7-2005 by SteveMk2 ]

oval TOFU ·

I'd say sell PT - you'll make millions on the initial purchase, but then you'll lose money as ppl keep on evading fares...:P

Ona more constructive note, I think the club rego is the way to go.. or let your wife drive one of the cars and let her pay for the running costs....

winerot ·

i dont envy your pending decision, thats a nice very nice fasty
hope something else pops up that will negate the selling of your
pride & joy, whats the other car a vw too must be if you drive both.
cheers wally

splittychick ·

Don't sell it,you'll totally regret it.House prices are going to stay the same for a while so just save for a little longer for the deposit & you can have both.Shes such a beauty how could you part with her??Is it not an option to sell the other vechicle??(if its not a vw!!!!!!)

mscabrio ·

KEEP THE FASTY !!

Hubby and I have 4 cars between the 2 of us (Oval bug, new bug cabrio, a daewoo and a forrester) and we are happy !

That is one mighty fine fasty you have there !

Purple Martin ·

So you have two cars... one is the fasty (sweet ride!), what is the other one???

robnjo ·

if it has to go, put it on eBay with a reserve (what you think you need for the deposit or as close to the amount)
I had to sell one of my boats and am still sad about it(7 years latter) but cars and boats Don't make money like a House does.
...and when your all sorted get a new project👍:beer

field ·

I had to do the same thing a couple years back, i sold my 75 bay (my pride and joy)
i'm stoked that i bought a house in a place were i grew up and know my kids can have
the same lifestyle as i did... but on the other hand i bloody miss that bus...and having
finally brought another nothing (to me) comes close to that one i let go.😢

stephenianjames ·

Pat..dont sell the black, chalky one (esp after all the hard slog to get her going). It's far too nice a car to lose money on and you'll kick yourself like I did when I sold 'hearsey'.

For those wondering, Pat's other car is a 1993 Daihatsu Charade (which pick-a-part wouldn't even take off his hands for $50) so there's no point selling that.

Stick it out mate, and just start saving extra hard and try and keep the beast.

rose ·

Sell it, we had to sell a car to get the deposit for our first house. Now we are in our second house great house with everything and also 8 cars now 5 have rego and insurance and there's just me and hubby. You can always use the equity in your house later on to buy more cars. we are crazy 6 vw's 1 bmw and 1 toyota.

Paddo ·

MMMMmmm lots of great advice guys, I really appreciate it.

Oh and Steve I dont own a 93 daihatsu charade.

Its a '94' and I cant get rid of it because when my wife does drive its the only car she will use (says she couldn't handle me if she crashed the fasty! so refuses to drive it).

Steve I recon u should just worry about hanging on to a vw full stop!:P

mmmm I have not made up my mind yet....decision pending.

Paddo ·

Oh Steve, bought and sold any cars lately?:kiss

Am thinking of the same thing up here. Money for land and a building... or pay the rego on the square, the subie, the motorbike and continue with the rebuilding of the oval......................................

I think I will have to get a bigger loan and bite the bullet. My suggestion is you won't get back anywhere near what you have invested in the fasty and to get another car and then put the same effort in is wasteing money that you have already spent. maybe the club rego and using PT a bit might help, but I know what I would be doing, thats why I am looking for a big garage when I buy/build.

oval TOFU ·

Keep the fasty.
Buy a (cheap) push-bike.
Take PT.
Sell ya spare parts.
?

winerot ·

paddo
i mentioned before if pos keep the fasty & hope something else happens(nice fasty)
but as rose above said a house is in the long run more important & as hard as it is,
sometimes to make a sacrifice to gain security has to be the only way.
cheers wally (buy a scratchie you never know)

sell sell sell... i sold an old ute to help get my 1st deposit and never regretted it cause the place i brought had a big shed on it,
that gave me the incentive to fill it up wif VWs..
unfortunately it worked and i have a few sweet rides over the years..
but have always (so far) kept the oval n when i get into the poorhouse (come to think of it i've never escaped) i sell all the cars but the reliable old oval to get me around..
you have to unfortunately start somewhere..
n its a bit hard to live in a fasty..
