Explanation of Karmann Ghia\'s VIN #

I always thought that the first 3 digits (141 or 142) referred to LHD or RHD then followed by the chassis number. Looking at the Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdatingkg.php , the 141 or 142 does not seem to reflect LHD/RHD but it reflects the production year. Can someone confirm please? How would you tell if the car was original LHD or RHD then?
Thanks

With Type 3 Ghias the number represents the model style.
eg
341 = LHD hard top non sunroof
343 = LHD sunroof
344 = RHD hard top non sun roof
345 = RHD sunroof

I thought that was the case with T1s as well. Four different sets of digits represented LHD, RHD, hardtop or cabrio but I am confused now
