Have a new 1600 TP with a porsche style cam, and after i got it tuned it runs quite rough below 2000rpm until the cam comes on. Is ther any way to make it a tad more driveable in the lower end of the rev range? My mechanic (who is a highly regarded VW/porcshe mech.) says there isnt much you can do? It does run hella good above 2-2500rpm though....
Oh, and it periodically misses for a split second on the highway, like one cylinder doesnt fire. This happens every 5 mins or so. Am i expecting to much, or is this easily fixed? I bought a new coil, but that hasnt done anything. nn[ Edited on 12-7-2005 by 72FASTY ]

Some more details my help people to give you more info, new as in Brazilian or re-built original? If re-built what is standard, what is aftermarket? Obviously cam is not standard, what grind is it?
Anything else non stock, carbs, air cleaner, dissy (points or electronis) exhaust, any head work, oversize pistons/crank, spark plugs, etc?
It all affects what your asking.
:blah

Brazilian (engine, not my waxing regime)
rebuilt original 32's
009 dizzy
dont know excact details of the cam, but the my mechanic picked it straight away without me telling him it had a non standard cam in it.
Everything else is stocko, except for EMPI exhaust system

Not that I know much about aftermarket stuff, but given it's winter, is it more pronounced when the motors cold? Does the aftermarket exhaust have the heat riser connections? Inlet manifold may be too cold. (Oh, unless it's a type 3 with dual carbs??)
If a knowledgabe mechanic says there's not much you can do, that may just be the case. All you can do is try changing some parts one at a time and see if it improves.
things to try:
Check plug colour, you may be able to try different main jets.
As you have a 009, try varying the timing a little (or fit a stock dissy).

Not saying you mech doesnt know his stuff but i know several 1600's, 1776's and 1916's with "Porsche style cams" that run smooth at 800 rpm - mine included.
Never had twin 32's but i i cant accept that the miss is something you have to live with.
It may take a while to tune it out but it should not be there.
I would start with a full tune up - new leads, points, condenser, coil (done??) rotor, points and cap. Then set points timing and valves. Then retune carbs

Sounds like an electrical fault. Especially the misfiring every 5 minutes or so. Or maybe the fuel filter is chockers.
