Hi all, I found this today sitting on the dump. I couldn't get close to it to have a proper look but it's obviously a barn door, and didn't appear to have any windows in the back. Is it rare?

when you say barn door, if you mean a real big engine lid and when you say no back windor you mean no window at the back of the bus opposite the wind screen(s) as opposed to no side windows toward the back of the bus . then yes it would be very very rare

no dime a dozen
sshhhh where is it😀

Sorry guys I'll try and get a better pick, I couldn't get any closer because of a fence. I found it on the dump between Saphire and Rubyvale central QLD. I saw the sign for the dump as I was driving through and thought I'd have a look for any old cars.

Go the dump! Get down there man and rescue that split, not everyday you find a split at the local dump.
Sandy ·
Damn fence. The poor bus is probably shagged anyway, but I was just interested to know if I'd found anything special. What's left of the tailgate appears to have a window, but there doesn't seem to be any in the sides from what I could see. I wish the dump was open. I saw a few other splitties sitting around in peoples yards too, but they had windows.

looks like the roof has been peeled back. probably an old panel. they still had hte rar window.
kombibob ·
its not a barn door ,has overhang on front.
Sandy ·
Well it's got barn doors on the side isn't that what people are referring to when they call them barn doors?
57kombi ·
No.
Barn doors were made from 50 to 55 and had no peak over the nose, they also had a large engine lid door , that is why they are called barndoor buses, the size of the engine lid was like a barn door.
All splits had side opening doors, some had a set on both sides and a few were made with sliding doors.
It looks like a standard panel van and are not rare. This might upset people but there were tens of thousands made, they are called rare because you dont see them on the roads because they cost a hell of a lot to do up.
Most people on this site know where there are splits sitting in fields ect, but they cannot afford to restore them.
Again, standard splits are not rare.
Cheers
Dave

See, shows what I know, thanks.

Heres a pic of the engine lid of a barny, you can see that the top bit with the window in does not open.
It was available as an option(the opening rear top section), but these are quite rare
And heres the side , you can see no peak.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

if it's a barn door panel, then it's rare, but it is unlikely. Panels. being commercial in nature, have been used for commercial purposes, so live a harder life and so more died young. If it's not a barn door, it would still be 'rare' when you ar thinking numbers around. Sambas (v rare), Double Cabs ( v rare), then Panels, then Single Cabs then Microbus/Real Camper, then Windowed Vans, I'd say is the 'rare' running order.
However, there are a lot of panels out there, but most are very roooooooted and remain in fields, tips etc - as they often make good sheds. Fixing 'em is expensiveish, and often people want windowed vans for people moving, so they tend to get fixed.
Me I love Panels, but having been through, and going through the process of fixing them, they are not simple creatures, and repairs require some skill to do very well.
Fixable panels - I'd say you be looking at $3-$4k, Original ones with little rust (ie nothing to do in the floor), $4-6k, and finished and painted twice that at least. They do cost a lot to paint well, as the original spot welding and commercial nature makes the body line hard to get 'straight', and in reality, they we're not that 'straight' in the first place compaired to their non-commercial cousins. I'd say that a rust repaired one would still cost at least $7k to paint, maybe $10.
From those pics, I'd allow at least $20k to fix it, so while rare, will not be a viable proposition unless you really couldn't find a better one anywhere - like Europe maybe.
I don't think it's a barnie, and if the roofs gone - keep driving....

Look at the pics it is obviously not a barny.
And how can you call a vehicle that was made in the tens of thousands rare?
they are around but cost too much to get on the road.

Rare, in the context of remaining numbers, geographical location (AU), and ownership potential. This in comparison to later bay windowed 'kombis'.
I know they made a few ... But in proportion to those made, verses AU survivors I think the term 'rare' is not being used as a literal.
Going to the Nats and finding a real Split Ambo - now that would be rare, but if you just call it a split, then no, not rare.
