I am buying a car which has a brand new case so it has no engine number. VicRoads are getting too worried about it now. Can't do the security register check and don't want to register the car.

Need a receipt too. In Vic you will end up with a VP (Victorian Police). Just had a long talk to VicROadsnn[ Edited on 4-8-2005 by bugDbug ]

Couldn't you just accidentally trip over while carrying a hand full of number stamps very similar to the engine number on the rego papers and try to catch them by hitting them with a hammer:P
If the old engine case was toast and never used again then how would they know?

Adding to above, buy a case which is definitely rubbish from a wrecker so you have a receipt with the engine number, stamp that on the case with 5 or 6 mm stamps and totally trash the old case. Off to Vicroads with the receipt for the "new engine" in your car!

totally agree with the previous two posts.. :thumb
you will save yourself heaps of bother if you acidentally on purpose trip over with a hammer, metal stamps, landing a new case number similar to the old case that your about to fall on and break beyond recognition..
do yourself a favour..
what they dont know wont hurt em.. 🙄

I to totally agree with the above. Much betterway to go.

what you guys are suggesting is illegal, but if you want to do this then do it. there is a right way of doing this and its been given in the form of getting a police number. i remember someone asking for body tags and getting told that he was dodgy when all he wanted was the tags of body production not used in the registration process and all because he wanted his car to be perfect.

^ yeah that was me! And I've been on this forum for about 3 years or so. The production tags dont mean shit in a legal sense. Its the stamped number on the chassis that is counted.
Oh yeah, i'd get some other dodgy case thats stuffed and use the number off that. I'd guess the authorities wouldnt be too worried anyway as they are old vdubs, not late model cars that are rebirthed a lot.

I had a similar issue with using a type 3 case on a type 1, as the fan housing covers the number. I spoke to vicroads, they said they dont stamp numbers and said to call vic police to check if they do, they said no. I rang vicroads back, they said to talk to an automotive engineer. I called an automotive engineer who, 'off the record', said to stamp the number (off the top of the case) onto the bit below the genny stand and vicroads would be none the wiser.

Now this does make sense....

When I took my first kombi to the RTA for inspection the number on the fan housing didnt match the number on the case (type 4) so I took a mirror so the dear lady wouldnt actually have to put her head inside to see the REAL engine number. So I'm holding the mirror and its all quiet. I'm thinking its all quiet because she cant see the number and suggests she hold the mirror to look. She says "nah just tell me the number" and I go "well its the number I wrote on the bit of paper, if you're gonna take my word for it then why do I have to come all the way out here for an inspection" (because my local rta wont do them). I could tell by the look on her face that it was the wrong answer and read the number to her. Stoopid stoopid stoopid government departments.

I actually do have a rooted old case which I can use the number off then tosse it
