basically they are a straight thru exhaust so little back pressure but a lot of noise. had one on the bug im driving now but took it off as i was nearly deaf after 4 hours of highway driving. the only hot dog i would even consider using is the rapid exhaust baffled hot dog as they are the only one to my knowledge that are rated street legal cause of their lower noise level.nn[ Edited on 8-8-05 by barls ]

I'm currently running a pair of hotdogs and I get a lot of complaints about the noise, it's probably a matter of time before I get a sticker for it so they will be coming off my car soon.
I reckon a good 4 into 1 system sounds the best.

my car does all come into one pipe... then has a Hot dog???? fairly loud is it legal though.....
barls ·
probably not it has to be under 92 decibels to be legal. you could get it tested to find out how loud it is. all i did cause mine had one as i said. i cut it off and wielded a muffler on much quieter
byronbus ·
Neighbours musnt like mine at 5.30 when i get up to go for a surf...
markbailey ·
yeah mine is really loud... i like it though.... my neighbours arnt that impressed at 2.00 at night????
Anthiron ·
yeah ive got twins. bloody loud. no way they are legal. and i drive home from work every nite late lol. about 3am usually on weekends. wakes up the neighbours and the other house members when i drive into the garage. ill be going 4 into 1 soon.

I bet the neighbours love that.

I run a 2 inch straight through sports muffler and i think it may louder than a hot dog. Yep the neigbours are not very happy, but they have learnt to live with it. That said i think a new system will go on soon.

isnt the legal limit 96db for older cars, or is that only the case in ACT? we have it so easy here 🙂
pete wood ·
nope that's right for NSW too. the exception is if you have a later than 80 something (?) motor then it has to be under 92db.
And I agree with Barls, Hotdogs are bloody awful on the highway. Used to have one on a 1640 and it droned terribly. Changed it to a bypass muffler. Go a nice turbo muffler with some decent extractors.nn[ Edited on 9-8-2005 by pete wood ]

i might have been confused last nite due to the :beer. but i was fairly sure it was 92 for cars and 96 for bikes
bus914 ·
is a hot dog the same thing as a glass pack muffler?
Vw nutter ·
ive got extractors and a hot dog muff on me 74 bay it sounds wicked as! alomost like one of those really loud harleys! hot dog is very different to a glass pack, hot dog is very loud and glass pack is quite, i think
barls ·
hey vw nutter it was you i recommended rapid to wasnt it.
VWCOOL ·
Hot Dog was a trademark or brand name for a small-dianeter, glass-packed resonator/muffler sold in the groovy 1970s. It was called Hot Dog because it was painted red and had rounded ends, like the ends of a hot dog sausage...
They are almost usesless for cutting down noise... a larger straight-through glass-pack muffler is much better at absorbing sound to make your car quiet

Hey Barls, that was me you recommended Rapid to..
barls ·
ok i know that ive reccomended them to a few people now but im fairly sure that vw nutter actually has one of their systems on his kombi
Vw nutter ·
yeah thats right barls you were the one who pointed me in the right direction, and helped me heaps. and i am now very pleased with my rapid setup thanks to barls tho!
thanks Barls!
