Hi guys, I'm thinking about buying a kombi (probably mid to late 70's) to travel round oz in and wa wondering where i could go to get some tips and info about which models are better than others. I have been told by some people that its not likley that i could find one that would make the distance. I dont believe them and thought i should ask the experts.....
Thanks in advance

Any properly maintained car will travel around Australia. Kombis are no exception, and when they were new or relatively low mileage, thousands did just that, with no problems. But now, because of their age precautions must be taken. Unless you buy a Kombi with a trusted service history, then go nowhere without a thorough going over.
I drive my Kombi Double Cab every day, have been from Brisbane to Sydney twice, and back and forth from Coffs Harbour countless times. Have not quite done the around Australia trip, but there will be plenty on the forum who have, and they'll recommend it highly.
Have fun cruisin'.

I'd say a 2.0ltr for long trips, and low lights are my vote - pre 73. Crew Cabs are obviously the stand outs. Consider that if you have say an 1800 engine on a 1600 box, you'll chew more fuel. I'd be thinking more of things that you'll find of benefit beyond stock - like oil coolers, or if it's a camper that quality of the fit out.
