This is just a little question about the idle speed screw on the type4 left carb.
I know from a recent thread that it should be about 1-1/2 turns from closed.
Here's the question(s):
The further closed it goes the slower the idle, right?
Will opening it too far make the motor idle too quick or not at all?
I ask these because I checked the idle speed screw and it was about 3-1/2 turns open. And yet the motor still does not idle. I set it back to 1-1/2. I messed with it after the motor stuffed up to try and make it idle. Not sure if it was correctly set in the first place.
As you may or may not know my van's motor is stuffed because of a nasty compression leak. Before I pull the motor out I just want it to idle a little so I can finish up my diagnostics. Ie run a more thorough compression test. And I want to fix the nuts on the back bumper before taking everything out, which involves moving the van so the extension cord reaches.
Thanks.

I had the same trouible Car would not idle and the idle screw was over 3 turns out. It turned out to be the main trouble with it was that the valves were in bad need of adjusting. When I did this it idle a lot better.
I hiope this helps in your case.

That is a big help. thankyou.
I know the engine is wrecked and hopefully soon will be fixing it. I was wondering how much the idle screw helped.

Is it the small mixture screw or the larger air screw you are turning out. If the air screw is not out, it will idle slow.

the big air screw.

Oh. Maybe the idle jet is blocked?

possibly. shouldnt be though. after the motor stuffed up i cleaned out the carbs and jets to see if that was the prob. it wasn't but there was soooo much crud in the bowls. it prompted me to fit an inline fuel filter. before i pull out the motor i'm going to do one last check of the carbs to see if anything is amiss. In all honesty I have no faith in the top gasket in the left carb. Even though it turned out I drove for over a year with it misfitted, and the top of the right carb flapping. I didn't do the carb work. not my fault.
