Hi,

My 71 beetle needs the front wheel bearings replacing - I noise has developed in the front and I disassembled the front wheels inspected the bearings and repacked them on the weekend. The outside front right bearing is stuffed (pitted, filings everywhere etc). Qustion is - can anyone recommend a place to have these replaced in Melbourne?

Theres a place in Mitcham that I've been going to for a few years - they even had NOS ball bearings in the box if you so desire to keep it all stock... They're on Rooks Rd right near the railway crossing - opposite the Daewoo dealer.. AA bearings- I think they're callednn[ Edited on 15-8-2005 by oval TOFU ]

if your confident enough to pull them out and re-pack them, replacing them is just as easy:thumb

Taking out the outer race can be a biach though!

But try things at least once! I do! Then I curse and swear and try again!

If I didn't have to replace the races I'd do it myself - from what I understand, this is not an easy thing to do

Not easy, not too hard though. I used either a cold chisel or a big old flat head screw driver to hammer out the race bit by bit - have to do it concentrically so you don't screw up the drum (though they are very tough) grease where te race slides out helps a bit too. It's very doable by yourself - nbot really worth paying someone else to do it IMO.

After you take it out, take it to the bearing shop so he can match up the numbers. Would be a good idea to replace the inner grease seal too as you'll probably warp it when you're removing it... $7 from memory... where abouts do you live?

hmmm, that might be a bit far to travel to Mitcham, there should be plenty of bearing places around there though... let your fingers do the walking.. good luck!
