Man, they are nice!

Hi
They look a lot like watercooled Kombi heads, only meaner.

"The 25 horsepower robbing cooling fan and shroud is completely eliminated"
Dunno anout 25 ponies but yes - a few
But waht about the cooling of the cylinders????
Dount you still need a fan for that ???

Why off road only?
HGFS ·
If the fan robs 25hp then I guess split beetles are only for looking at, they would have 0hp left for travelling along the road, minus drivetrain losses as well. They are meant to be slow but not that slow.
Nice looking heads though, seem to have some good features, just a bit of an over-sell:blah.
Only thing is you've got issues of radiator placement, fan, water pump etc etc. You'd get some funny looks if you went up to the counter & asked for a water pump for your early beetle/bus❗

I'm guessing they havent been approved by the California Smog Board.Chewy wrote:Why off road only?

Oh come now dude..its not quite that cut and dried. The power losses from the fan increase with rpm. Whether its proportional or not I dont know/care. It all depends on the rpm of the fan. otherwise there would be no market fro "Power Pulleys"SVW-054 wrote:If the fan robs 25hp then I guess split beetles are only for looking at, they would have 0hp left for travelling along the road, minus drivetrain losses as well. Baja-Wes did studies on this very subject some time back and im sure he would have the data somewhere. Wes?
As a matter of interest, on the F-Vee's we run the fanbelt as loose as we can adjust it. Just so it wont flick off. This ensures that the belt slips as the fan load increases and the improvement in power is considerable. Its remarkable how well the engines perform at high revs when the fanbelt breaks, (not long before the engine seizes)! remember tho, we are revving our 1200's to around 6300 to 6500rpm for a really good engine.
Short answer, No! Not necessaryBut what about the cooling of the cylinders????

Ready for Twin plugs................interesting.

So all those people who get upset at breaking a fin or 2 are worrying too much???[Short answer, No! Not necessary

Yeah I figured its not that cut & dried, just pointing out their one size fits all statement. They said it not me. It was intended as a bit tongue in cheek but I guess I should have included a LOL or something..damn internet language. Its similar when you put a motor that is good for 200 Flywheel Hp on a chassis dyno & it pulls 175Hp or so after drivetrain losses. Does that mean if you put a 25Hp motor in that drivetrain you get 0 Hp?? No its all relative.tassupervee wrote:Oh come now dude..its not quite that cut and dried. I know a bit about power losses from fans as I used to sell commercial/industrial fans in the air conditioning industry so I'm aware of things like fan laws etc which will tell u how much more power a fan will draw at a certain rpm.
25Hp sounds like a lot for such a small fan but that's their claim so who am I to dispute it.
I did say the heads looked ok though, just think its a bit of over the top advertising but you get that.

The inlet ports look a bit spaced out, more like a type 4 than a type 1?? Anyways very cool looking heads!

However, Wes did do studies on the fans some time back and has some hard figures. I cannot for the life of me remember what the outcome was but the power soak was pretty significant.
Wes? help me here!

Yeah they look great, but I wonder why both combustion chambers are different?
pete wood ·
I think tas might have a point. All the serious drag racers go without fans, and a lot of them don't even seem to have fins on their barrells, so for short periods it can't be that much of an issue. A vw mech mate of mine used to cut his belt off between round 1 and 2 of sprints if he needed an edge. One porsche owner couldn't believe the difference in between rounds and accused him of rigging the car. Imagine how much more HP a porsche would make without a belt... 😀

That is a very valid question!Gracey wrote:Yeah they look great, but I wonder why both combustion chambers are different?

Both combustion chambers are different so that when you drill
and tap for the dual plugs, you don't end up with a sharp point or edge in the chamber.
The dual plugs come in parallel while the originals are at an
angle to each other.
I think that there is enough meat in there to even things up if
you don't want the dual plugs.

Possibly, they are a poor-quality product designed to lighten wanna-be racers' wallets...nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by VWCOOL ]tassupervee wrote:That is a very valid question!Gracey wrote:Yeah they look great, but I wonder why both combustion chambers are different?
