Thoughts on airbag suspension for KG

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/43040/thoughts-on-airbag-suspension-for-kg

I've seen an add in an American VW mag for airbag suspension. Has anyone experienced this type of system?

Would ride quality/handling be compromised compared to regular suspension (all other factors being equal).

I especially like the idea of height adjustability at the flick of a switch.

Any thoughts or opinions would be welcomed. BTW my KG will be IRS as I've put a deposit on a rust free IRS pan.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
There has been a lt of discussion about this on the Samba site, go to:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=122490&highlight=air+bag

or do a title search on 'air bag' under the Ghia forum.

Good luck
John

I thought they were illegal in Australia now? Except if it's for wheelchair access, or something like that.

thanks guys..read the samba thread and it generally seemed positive (except for the cost etc) however the real concern is the whole legality issue as raised by Purple Martin.

My plans for the KG are basically full resto with Subaru EJ22 (later EJ20T perhaps) and the airbag suspension etc etc, so I will obviously need it engineered anyway. I'm hoping the engineer can accomodate the airbags into the certification.

i think you will find that its only illegal if not engineered and adjustable while the car is in motion. but you will still be limited to 100mm or 1/3 of the original height minimum. but this is something you will have to talk to your engineer about cause this is one of those gray areas in the adrs.
