Hello guys,

just a quick question, what is the best oil to use in a stock 62 bug ?

Anthiron ·

do a search. been done a million times.

i use castrol gtx2 as do a lot of others but then a lot of others dont.

im thinking about switching to magnatec.

i've heard bad things about Magnatec, but i havent been able to find any articles on it.. anyone else?

VWCOOL ·

Go to Supercheap Auto and buy Castrol GTX for $10 or $12. It's fine for a stocker..
Do you know about cleaning the oil strainer etc when you change the oil every 3000 miles?

Soup_A_Star ·

know i didnt know about the oil thing every 3000 k's

i just like beeltes but i know nothing about them 🙁

i best take it to a mechanic to do it lol

thats 5000kms... 3000mi. Stock bugs dont have a 'filter' only a strainer - which is only good for catching flys or chucks of piston that may break off.. yeh. Not very effective at anything concerning filtering. So we have to change the oil more frequently than normal cars. It's like not washing your undies and just throwing them out when they get dirty - you have to do it a whole lot more if you don't wash em...

um... a friend told me...

nah you not allowed to pay for oil changes. Put on dirty clothes, undo 6 little nuts under engine, all oil falls out into the pan you bought from supercheap, wash out the strainer just as you would a tea strainer cept not in the sink, put it back on with new gaskets, tighten the nuts with one finger, put new oil in.

even if you take it for a service every 6 months you can change the oil every 3 months in between services. If you're nervous ask someone to show you how the first time.

The only thing I'd add to that is it helps the oil to flow out if the engine is warm - though it's harder on your fingers if it's too warm!

Yikes...where is the strainer, it comes off with the nuts, etc? Never knew this one.

It sits on - therefore above - the circular plate on the bottom of the engine. As mentioned, looks like a gauze wire tea-strainer!

Magnatec is friction-modified, which some peolpe don't like, for older engines anyway. Also Castrol is now owned by BP, I think. So maybe "Castrol Ain't Castrol".

The "mechanic" I took my first VW to sealed up the strainer plate with silicone or gasket sealant! If you go to a mechanic, they should be familiar with the VW setup. If you do it yourself, always use kero. to clean the strainer & plate (not petrol). A new gasket set should be obtained first. Do NOT overtighten the 6 small capnuts when replacing them!
