does any one know of a rolling bearing crank 4 sale any size
Turbo54 ·
I know of one, maybe for sale but why?
I firend of mine thought he would run one in his awesome 57 street / show car and was always scared to give it heaps incase of breakage, (there so old you dont know what they have been through) and it became a little noisy. He became so paraniod he took it out and now runs a scat crank and rod setup and gives it heaps. Just thought I would let you know and just to try to save you some $$$ in the long run. Unless you want to use it as a wall ornament!

My wife raced a roller crank beetle in 60s-Okrasa and it was very good at throwing pulleys off.nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by Warrenm ]

Roller cranks also suffer regular needle bearing cage failures due to the inability of the roller bearings to cope with impact loads from too low RPM and detonation. This alwys results in the destruction of the main pin and conrod.
Ask and older (bevel drive) ducati or harley mechanics about the story with roller cranks!
The secret to keeping them alive is to keep the revs under load above 3 to 4000 rpm.
Ther are little, if any arguments to suport the use of roller cranks now in pressure fed oiling systems. The last regular users of them in 4 strokes were the jap big bikes and they have universally moved to slipper bearing cranks for reliability and cost effectiveness.
The argument of rotational resistance (friction) is long gone when balanced against structural rigidity and reliability of slipper cranks.
2 strokes still use them only due to lubrication (oil mist only) issues.
Make a nice coffe table stand out of one tho!

Tass I thought it was Hi revs taht killed them.... no low ????
maybe i remember the stories round the other way
yes i hada Harley with roller bearings in the crank wouldnt rev at all but would climb up the side of a mountain on a dirt track heaps of torque

One of the best modified SPG roller crank's I 've seen had it conrods cut off and std slipper bearing conrods fitted...small journal..hey steve you don't need to go old school with the crank!!!! you won't like the ticking sound at idle when the rollers are shitten themselves. cheers

Nah, its the low rev slogging that kills 'em. A roller crank, when its ok will rev to infinity all day.
Usually, the cage breaks allowing the rollers to bunch up together and the rest gets really ugly really quickly.
hehehe harleys are not exactly noted for their state of the art head design and are usually quite reluctant to rev up much! this is particularly so with the stock ignition as they are rev limited at (from memory)5000 or 5500rpm

They don't like Drag Race starts either! THe SPG were not splined like the early Porsche Rollers.
Had a guy in Toowoomba years ago who had a Beetle saloon car. It had a 82mm Spg Roller in it with 48 ida's with home made manifolds!
Took it to Surfers Paradise back in 1970 and ran 13.8 straight off the trailer!! Not bad for a dirt racer!😁

Way back when I was an apprentice (1980), the boss sponsored a speed car that ran a 2180 with a roller crank and fuel injected alcohol. That lasted season after season. So I would have to support the argument that a car that ran around in circles with no gears, that revved it's tits off from the time it started to the time it was turned off is good for a roller crank.
Sounds just like my lawn mover. that has a roller crank and that also revs it's tits of from start up to shutdown!
