Asked before and ended up getting the 15meg iPod for #1 son about 18mths ago.
MORE than happy with it. Not cheap but a REALLY nice piece of electronics.
Now it is #2s turn.
Went and had a look and saw the 20meg version but also saw
* Creative 20meg
* Samsung 20meg
Both about the same price but basically have extra features over the iPod
* longer lasting battery
* FM radio
* standard case
On the down side you loose
* VAST range of add ons (yeah at extra $$$)
* Street cred
Anyone have one of those 2??
Had a look at heaps but basically i want 20meg. I have filled 3meg REALLY easy here at work with just the stuff i listen to.

gig,..not meg.
i 'meg' is about the size of a floppy disk. (1.44mb)
1gb - or gig, is 1000mb (approx).

Its interesting how technology gets so advanced so quickly. U won't believe it, but new technology is coming out, and those MP3s are getting out of date. (Believe it or not).
New things coming out (some already) include MP4 players, where it plays the music, along with the music clip, and u can store photos and movie clips on em and everything, AND WATCH THESE MOVIES FROM THE HANDSET! Incredible stuff. There is the IPOD photo, but that doesn't play animation. But anyways, lots of new toys to come out for all of yas, enjoy.
Dam i babble on crap so badly...🤪

I've got an iRiver H340 - a bit like the iPod photo..
40Gb
has radio (can record stuff off it as an mp3)
spare batt pack for on the road rechargin and use when the internal abtt dies
headfone remote
mic
desktop dock
The only reason I would get an iPod foto is coz of that sexual touchie wheel nav key. I reckon the iPod has the better interface.. it displays the fotos faster as well.. On some Dick Smith catalogues, it says that the H300 series can play vids, but I think that's a typo. Even with the firmware updates, I cant play no vids...

hard 2 say what 2 get ipods have a ggod rap
but the ipod shuffle are shite
fm radio who cares?
btw 1 mg is 1024 bytes

Get the ipod photo!!!! It's faaaabulous!!!! :thumb
Bizarre ·
Why???
Just interested WHY you think it is.
As i said the iPod 15 is brilliant. The feel the control the software just makes it so good to use.
I am a little wary about moving away from the iPod ❓

Why??!!?? Because I said so 😉

Have an older creative mp3 player and it has been good 🙂 software is fairly easy to use (file transfer can be a bit slow compared to ipod) and I guess ipod does still win for its user-friendlyness ....but creative is known for good sound and I think the qaulity of build of the player was better than the ipods available at that time.. I'm not sure with the model you are interested in but mine inlcuded a mic as well which is fairly handy...I actually think my player looks better than an ipod ...
For the price I thought the other brands were a better deal than ipod...since you got all of the accessories and more GIG and didn't have to pay extra for them..

did i mention ipod?
i bought mine (40gb ipod photo) a few months ago to take to sydney with me with my lecture notes on it so i could study while we were driving, as a backup drive for my ibook, a recorder for when i fall asleep in lectures, a periodic table for when i need to do chem without a textbook, somewhere to store my HUGE amount of photos (kinda like a wallet you can drag out to show friends cute pictures...), a formula 1 encyclopaedia, alarm clock, solitaire for when im bored and...
something to listen to when im commuting the 20-odd kms on my bicycle every day!!
it hasnt left my side since!

doh, one of the recent computer mags had a big comparo test of mp3 players, and tested dozens of them. I bought it but cant find it now. Would have been APC, pc world... one of the common ones. I am almost certain that something called iRiver won it though.

I bought an iPod photo - 60Gb ...
..and while I am a Apple fan, and have owned them for years, I was not so impressed with the iPod ... I did no research, and it was a last minute purchase...
Reasons for Looooving the iPod... sexy interface, with great scroll wheel, the photos are quick to load and scoll through...
The reason to hate this product is mainly due to the level of circumvention apple has tried to place on the product...
Firstly with the photos, you can't just drag and drop photos onto the device (so as to be viewed on the Ipod) you have to select folders on your PC that will automatically sync when you hook up the device. Very annoying when you want only a few photos from each of your folders...
Secondly, regarding music, you again can't just drag and drop, you have to use iTunes, which you should download, trial and check out the interface, as it is not the coolest player on the block... I have downloaded iPod plugins for winamp and using that ... or use ephod....
To view photos within windows from your iPod (for free) you again need to download a thrid party product, XPlay photo browser...
Don't get me wrong, I love the look the feel, and the fact that I can say I have an iPod, its just that because of their licensing agreements etc. They have to try and circumvent their products, which proves very annoying (and illegal for the consumer!) I would seriously look at the iRiver... I don't really care about viewing photos on the device, would much rather vids...
My gripes could just be because I am an IT nerd/geek and was expecting(wanting) so much more...
All the very best with the purchase!
Good luck!nn[ Edited on 25-8-2005 by Da Wiz ]

^^ you're making me feel better for buying a iRiver H340 in the first place now! Yeh, the drag and drop function when I'm hooked up to the computer is a real good feature - nice'n'easy.
One more thing that's a little annoying, which I'm sure anyone else with a H300 eries will agree, is that it takes over 30 secs for it to boot on start-up. And when you're listening to music and you want to change the track/rewind/stop, you have to hit the button twice: once to turn on the screen, then to actually perform the function...It's a little gripe, but it's still there

I found the mag, if you like I can send you the articale. U2U me if you wish. its august issue of aust pc authority.
iriver iFP 900 series won the flash players. Rio Carbon won the hard disk variety though iriver H300 series, ipod mini and ipod photo were all recommended.

i was thinnking about getting an mp3 player for my birthday. My main purpose would be to play my music in the car with the fm transmitter thing. do other brands apart from ipod have that? I just cant be bothered burning cd's. Anyway I think ive changed my mind. The $400 needed would by me a lot of blank cd's even if it does take me ages to burn them all... and now i am earning money again I dont want to spend so much of it... :P
What would be great is an in car cd player with a USB port to take a memory stick. Do they exist?
Bizarre ·
The purists say the sound aint as good - but the fact you dont have to search, carry, store CDs everywhere (and cd's do stuff up) i reckon that the FM transmitter thng is the go!
It is good enough for me
Andf thanks for the mag review :kiss (:puke)

Just rig up a amp system, with a small headfone jack running from the amp to the dash, simply put the jack into your Mp3 player and you got purfect sound, all controls are on the player, vol etc, when you leave the car simplt thae the player wid you, too easy

they make head units now that have hard drives.... the music can be loaded in by putting the cd in and copying it or direct link to your computer via a usb cable....
the hard drive is built into the face so when you want to load songs in via your computer you just take the face of the stereo off and hook it up... last time i looked into it(bout 12 months ago) they could hold roughly 2500 songs. sure by now they would have bigger hard drives...
steff.........................

Belkin make FM transmitters - they just plug into the jack that the earphone normally do (line out would also suffice). The transmitter also plugs into your ciggie lighter so it doesn't drain the player's batteries.:thumb You'll find em on eFlay for about $50..

Bought the 20 GB for my wife when she went into hospital last year. She loves it. now she has the FM transmitter and uses it every day in the car.😵💫😵💫

BUY A CASE FOR UR MP3 PLAYER!!!!!!!! one of my friends just dropped my ipod onto like gravel (the stuff roads are made of) and coz it was in the leather case is seems to have survived (the silver and white bits had come apart a little at the top but I just pushed them back together and it seems to be cool :thumb), she dropped it from a pretty decent height too (she was holding it under her arm). I will always keep it in the case from now on...

I always keep im iRiver in it's case... it CAME in the pack.. Apple dont do that now do they? :P

are these the same purists that say ovals should only have period blaupunkt am radios, that vinyl records are far superior to CDs, that VWs shouldn't be watercooled and that real aussies drive utes?
:vader
When I find these purists I'm gonna...I'm gonna...I'm gonna give up, coz it's all way too complicated for me. My daughter is chucking Lego round the floor at the mo. I'm gonna go join in. That's where my brain is at. :duh
Get the one that you can work, that actually works and that has a good waranty.
And always ask for a discount. 😉

Creative Zen.. Now it was starting to play up a bit, like not powering up, I reformatted the drive as Creative said. re uploaded my sounds, only it to happen again, now very frustrated I returned to DSE, they were very helpful and offered a replacement, I refused the Zen, the fella agreed and said he had 3 returned in the last week, it is a known issue with the Zen!
so no I eat my words don't get a Zen
I now have a I-River 320, was a bit more cash but the features are great, only thing is you need a scholarship to work out how to use the bloody thing, I am sure it will come in time.
will keep you updated..
Andy

That happened with my brand new Apple too... Can I just say you only get the very bare essentials with the iPod whereas the Creative apparently comes with a whole heap of accessories!
VolksFolks ·
same as iriver, everything apart from the desktop cradle..

If I go the mp3 cd burning route I discussed earlier then there is the pITA of doing it, plus I need to buy another cd player that will play mp3. apparently CD players with USB ports dont exist. There is one out there with an SD card reader though...errr... So theres a good patent for ya. CD players iwth a USB port would selll.
So I am back to mp3 players with an fm transmitter but the guy at the stereo shop says that the sound through them isnt good. Is this true or was he trying to sell me an another cd player?
Bizarre ·
I read the article Amazer sent me and have ended up with the iPod 20 Gig photo.
The HIGHLY recomended ones were only 5 meg and i want a bit more than that.
The next recomended were the little iPod mini and the 60 Gig Photo.
they didnt recomend the 20GB as it did not have the photo features.
Now the new one is out and it does.
Wasnt happy with the controls of some of the others, the Creative didnt have photo and for the same $$$ i went Apple over Samsung
Anyway.... that is what i did.
Thanks for all the feed back.
I can sleep happily I have made an informed decision for once 🤓
