Dave Butler Runs 11.690 in All Motor

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/43226/dave-butler-runs-11690-in-all-motor

dangerous ·

Had another 4 runs last night and did a little more fine
tuning and driver practise.
12,467@113.78 bogged start & spuntyres in 1st & 2nd.
12,465@113,95 nearly stalled, then spun tyres & went right. Had to back off for a bit.
11.850@114.50 finally left the line without bogging. Shifted @ 6000 in 1st & 2nd(short).
11.690@114.77. Better 1.65 60' but still short shifted 1st & 2nd.
Still looking for some lost power, and trying to forget that
there is no boost to help, but it is all in one piece for the
Jamboree on 17th & 18th of September.
The air was very good, it got down to 34 ft relative altitude on the last run.
Car weighs 1830 lbs with me aboard (830kg) & all motor
minimum is 1750.

reub ·

Congrats. Will be interesting to see what the n/a engine does.

PS. Like your signature 'Go the Volksies! Whatever the engine!' My thoughts exactly.....

dangerous ·

Thanks Reuben.

Adolph ·

Great!!😵
Would like to see what it does when it is closer to 1750lbs.
Are you going to lighten her up a bit?

Hermann

dangerous ·

I may take some weight out, but only minor things like the standard front windscreen that still has the shattery type glass.
Most of the gains should come from keeping the engine up in the power.
In first and second it doesn't even get to peak power...same in 4th.
More time in the seat will fix that...and maybe a ratio change if funds permit.
Have 1.26 3rd and .89 4th now.
Need a 1.00 4th and possibly a 1.29 to 1.35 3rd. They are 002 style gears.
5.429 diff with 28" tyre.

Craig Paton ·

Congrats Dave

That's about 210 black track Hp.... with that weight!😁

Low 11's must be well in your sights!

dangerous ·

Yes Craig, there is still 50hp missing, but I suppose if everything works out,mid elevens are on the cards...you know I hate to guess or hypothesize!

Craig Paton ·

I'm sure you'll find that 50!!🥷

And according to the slide rule, that should possibly net you a 10.8-10.9@ 122mph.

But then, you already know that!😀

dangerous ·

Thanks Craig!
How about starting a post regarding your engine up-grade...we're all dying to hear!

Craig Paton ·

There's not a lot to tell as yet! Pete's been busy doin other stuff, Stan's finished the machining etc.

Last time I spoke with Pete, he said he's almost finished the case. That was about a month ago, so it'll be a while yet!

Probably won't be ready for another a month or 2. So I'll just polish my Beetle in the meantime! 😀

dragbug ·

What does this car actually use for the power plant?

dragbug ·

THANK CHRIST!
I was really hoping it wasn't some dum jap transplant.
Proves you dont need water to crack the quick times!!!!!!!!

Kepp it up Dave,
See you on the track soon!!

Craig Paton ·

Dragbug

Dave's n/a engine is AutoCraft with mech fuel injection!

Formally out of Stan Burrows VW Midget speedcar!

I'm not sure of the exact size but it's around 2600cc.nn[ Edited on 28-8-2005 by Craig Paton ]

dragbug ·

Now that makes me go all goey.....
Must sound like heaven to hear it on full noise.

Craig Paton ·

I heard the engine when it was raced by Stan a few years ago! Man it was Healthy!!

Im sure when Dave gets it fully sorted, it will be a weapon!!

dangerous ·

Pauter case and heads: 2700cc.
82 stroke.

Craig Paton ·

S*+% I was close! NOT!🤪

My Apologies Dave! Been away from the action for too long!😢nn[ Edited on 29-8-2005 by Craig Paton ]

Doug Sweetman ·

Bloody good Dave, great to see it turning some nice times.

Very consistent on the terminal speed - do you expect much of a change when you stop short shifting it ?

Shame theres no decent drag VW's operating in WA right now..... must be a lovely sound, 2.7L of air cooled nastiness......

dangerous ·

Hey Doug,
I really don't know what to expect except to say
there is probably a couple of tenths left in it.
On the minimum All Motor weight it should run 117mph
with the same power
which is lower than expected.
There are many things to investigate both with tuning and driving.
Also gearing is not ideal....too many excuses I know!

Doug Sweetman ·

hey at least you are out there running it and learning ! they arent excuses, they are just future opportunities.

Any ideas where the missing power has gone ?

hypo-vw ·

Well done Dave , those are excellent times for a naturally aspirated engine . Can't wait to get the opportunity to hear it run at the strip !! Get some pounds out of it and set records mate !!

dangerous ·

Thanks everyone for the positive input. It really spurs on the enthusiasm!
After a couple of days to think about it, I am steering towards fuel system tuning.
I have to get the shift light to come on in the gears other than 3rd, but I don't
really think that the power is hiding there...we'll see I guess.

shiftyvw ·

How much heavier is the pauter compared to a similar autocraft setup?

dangerous ·

would guess about 5kg.
will weigh it when it's appart next.

Craig Paton ·

Dave

What crank and rods do you have in your Pauter?
Do you still have that Billet crank that you manufactured youself? If you do, should post a pic to show your machining skills! 👍

Also what valve size do you run, and I guess they'd be longer than T1 standard length?

dangerous ·

Craig,
The crank is a billet 82mm flanged superlite made in
Australia and finished at Crankshaft Eng. but not by me.
I still have my 90mm crank that will bolt in for 2965cc
and the extra compression that always comes with extra
capacity. A good upgrade for later!
The rods are currently 5.7" eagles to siut 2.1" chev bearings and gudgeon pins.
The 90mm crank has carrillos but they are heavyer.
My spare engine has brand new Pauter billet rods and another 82.5mm stroke billet
crank that I finished last year.
Next time you drop by work you can photo it...you will be amazed how chunky
I made it for blower use!
Current valves are 52.8 inlet and 40.6 exhaust.
Spare engine has 54 and 40.6...Titanium of course!
Lengths are around 5.05"

Craig Paton ·

Geez Dave

I wouldn't mind all of your spare bits and pieces! :duh
That 90mm crank in your pauter block, damn near 3L!!!!!!!

Top it off with those big Titanium valves!!
Love to see that in your tube car!!!!!!:thumb

Pro-Stocker 3Litre n/a 🤪

58bbugger ·

What a beast!

Cant wait to see it at it's full potential.:beer

1303Steve ·

Hi

Well done, Zoom magazine have all the records in each issue, I think the MPH is 121 for that class, hope you can crack that one day.

Steve

dangerous ·

Hi Steve,
I think the current record for All Motor is 12.19@105.77.....unless you have other info?

Alex Holzl ·

hey dave

whats the chances of getting a video of your car running next time ur out?

alex

dangerous ·

Hi Alex,
Last time I saw you , you were about 5 years old....now I feel like an old bloke!
Being that I am an old Bastard, I don't have the knowhow to put video or photos for that matter, on the forum, but I will probably be down there at Easter or when ever the VW nats drags is on.
Hows your brother and Dad going?

Alex Holzl ·

Yeah i was prob still playing with play doe! You cant be that old your still playing with VW's!

Ill prob run my car at the Nats drags, so we will have to have a run together!

Yeah dads good hes slowing getting time to play with his race car and dieter is finishing his hsc so hes been a rude prick for the last couple of weeks! but apart from that we have just been having fun!

Yeah you rude pri..s! what you lost my number!JVLRacing:P

1303Steve ·

Hi Dave

Just went and got Zoom out of the work car, I made a mistake, sorry. Its said
All motor record is ET 12.19 P Page SQ Volkswagen Beetle/VW W/Bank 09/04
MPH 105.77 M Forward Chrysler Galant/ Mazda 13B WSID 03/04
So does this mean that you will have both the ET & MPH record now?

Zoom now have Jason O'Haloran writing a column for them now.

Steve

dangerous ·

Not yet Steve, has to be a National Event...the Jamboree is the next one...but I heard a three rotor Mazda is showing up.

dangerous ·

Actually that record is correct but it is now owned by a gemini. Pete had the old record at 12.25 in Rod's streeter, which also ran an 11.92 the same day but it wasn't within 1% of the 12.25...or something like that.

1303Steve ·

Hi Dave

Reading the All motor rules on the ANDRA site it says "1.1 Engine: 4 cylinder or 2 rotor engine only; all others prohibited." So it looks like the 3 rotor cant run, hopefully you can get the record at Jamboree.

Steve

Adolph ·

Hi Dave

ANDRA site says: Minimum weight, VW air-cooled stock "type 1" case only: 1750 pounds, otherwise 1950 pounds.
Would the Pauter case be a problem, if not, what about a type 4 case.

Hermann.

dangerous ·

Hello Hermann,
as of Sept 1 aftermarket cases and heads have been accepted.
My man inside Andra says Type 4 engines are OK as are WBX cases.
If the engine is all water cooled(ie WRX or WBX incl heads) the car would have to weigh 1900lbs, up from 1750 as air cooled.
Hope you can commit to the class!

humpty ·

Well done Dave, looks like your getting there....Good move on the windows...Loads saved there! But you new that!!! But surely you could save a few lbs in the wheels....Steelys must weigh a bit? Is that body still a double skin job? How about the old 'gasser' trick....A bloody great hole in the roof!! Just jokes! More suggestions as they come to light!!
Keep it up...So envious!

Hey Doug...

Dont worry about the lack of fast street bugs in Perth...Hermann is working on getting my old car finished with his N/A TIV (U should see it!) and he's already on the look out for a car to fit the Turbo donk....My turbo 1915 is in the works as soon as the Ragtop is on the road and my brother is looking to start on his Ragtop also. Bernie has just finished his stroker and Kurt is piecing together a stroker WBX for his supercharged LBug...And appartently theres a hotrod Fasty getting about.... When you gonna buld something? 😉

Doug Sweetman ·

when I win lotto.....

Anyways, isnt my rip snorting 1835 kadron powered beast fast enough ? :P I'm sure it might get down the quarter in a tad less than 17......

Dasdubber ·

Only saw Dave's first pass today at the jamboree - ran a tidy 11.65 into a big headwind. Hopefully ETs continue to drop over the weekend - go Dave!!

dangerous ·

Lost the plot a bit with the tune up, but 11.664@112.64
12.829@106.01 missed third and by the time I found it the race was over,
11.789@112.42 clean run but as I said, lost the plot as far as tune up is concerned.
Weighed in at 1807lbs(820kg) with the plastic windows.
There was a damn Honda that ran a 11.54 so it looks like I will have to try harder!
Best 60 footer was a 1.565 which made me happy considering the weight of the car.nn[ Edited on 18-9-2005 by dangerous ]

Craig Paton ·

Hey Dave

Is that Honda a street car?

dangerous ·

Kind of Craig, What the hell are you doing up at 5am?!
I thought Financial guys sleep in till 9am...even on week days.
Only joking!
It has rego plates, but it looks pretty light...but then so are volksies.
To be fair, he's making alot of power and it is probably heavyer than the volksies.
EDIT!
Car is not a street car but ONLINE PERFORMANCE's new AllMotor Civic. It weighs 803kg and reset the record at
11.54, but ran as quick as 11.3 I think at 116...perhaps some one keen can confirm this as I was going from
memory.nn[ Edited on 18-9-2005 by dangerous ]

Craig Paton ·

Bloody hell! Is it that early?

So the Honda N/A?

dangerous ·

Yes, for AllMotor must be N/A.

Craig Paton ·

You'll just have to Kick it's Ass Dave! Get an angry right foot!!😬

How's Wally goin?

dangerous ·

11.2....not sure why.

dangerous ·

Found a glitch in the fuel system but first round was on .
So I guess I will have to wait till next time tocontinue with the program.
That's 12 runs on the car so far.
MPH:107.04
111.63
112.75
113.09
113.78
113.95
114.5
114.77
112.64
106.0 (missed 3rd!)
112.42
112.33
Aside from the fuel system glitch and missed shifts, the
MPH changed with the air quality.
Last run was at 1099ft rel altitude and
the 114.77 was at 34 ft.

Dasdubber ·

So how did you end up today Dave? Manage to better the 11.66 from yesterday?

Doug Sweetman ·

This is really interesting stuff. What comp ratio does your motor run Dave ? out of curiosity.

Didnt realise the rel elevation would make that much difference to mph.

dangerous ·

12.5:1 Doug.

Doug Sweetman ·

Ta Dave. Is that pushing it for a drag air cooled engine ? or is that on the safe side ?

Is this on pump fuel ?

Sorry for the 20 questions, just curious....

dangerous ·

It is very safe since I run methanol.
For drag racing and with methanol there is
rarely a problem with the heads getting too hot.
I can run 14:1 with just a barrel
change (soon).
Petrol based fuels with good octane, like C14plus
and C16
can run OK on 14:1 but the head temp goes up real fast
and then power goes down.
In general I would suggest the higher octane fuel on air cooled heads than the same
comp ratio with water cooled heads.

Dak-A-Tak ·

pics 1 .Dave we can put you motor in my yellow car ( very fast):thumbnn[ Edited on 19-9-2005 by Dak-A-Tak ]

Dasdubber ·

I love the sound of this beast when you start it up - chug chug chug like a diesel tractor! But then it fires up and whoo-hooo!

Dasdubber ·

just another pic

humpty ·

Speaking of the yellow car...where is it Pete...too many cars to choose from? 😉
So this is the beasty Dave..... Certainly a lot of room in there without the cabin charger!
Your making amazing progress given the laps in competition....Keep it up!
Is that 'red mist' coming over your eye's? Must flatten honda, must flatten honda!
He,he....

Just a tip Dave, keep your fuel wrapped up in ice before filling up the car.Ever heard of this done?JVLRacing
