I would base it on the following

Does the car have Klack Klack door locks.

Does it have a Bat Wing ( pommy term ) steering
wheel

Does it have the SQUARE fuel tank ??


If u have these major items the Hearts would have to be fitted.

Did the heart tailights come standard? I thought that they were just a desirable accessory (but then what do I know ..... not much really!). I think that they look really cool, I want some for my 57.

BTW. What is a bat wing steering wheel? Is it the same / similar to a Petri wheel?

Yeah I did Dave. Some 55's had the one year only heart style lights with out the heart bit. Looked like smaller versions of the tail lights off the 56 on model ovals.

but they looked so small compared to the lights i have on the oval... or was it just me?

A friend of mine who was one of the first VW service stations here in SA told me that when the later ovl models came out they were swapping the heart lights for the later looking oval lights to make the car look more current. They did a huge cleanup in the 60's and found a box of heart lights, about 15 sets and thought no oone wants these so thay smashed them with sledge hammers and incinerated them. Also updated a set of ribbed split beetle bumpers and crushed them and threw them into the dam. I couldn't believe it...
Oh well, makes them more rare now.
I have 1 mint set and are looking for another so if anyone knows of any...
