U could have cleaned ur garage before u took shots of it! Looks like u live in a squalor!
ruckus ·
Nice. Where'd you get the alternator from?
blutopless2 ·
alternator from classic vee dub sydney... 55 amp
blutopless2 ·
am doing the king and link pins at the moment and the tie rod ends are next.
Grey 57 ·
Looking good Rod, that will keep you outta trouble. :thumb
blutopless2 ·
your not wrong... lots to do so little time... cant wait to have it back on the road next week or two.
inthebuckethenry ·
good stuff - keep the piccies coming please 😁
Midlife crisis ·
Very nice engine looks good now. are you painting it if so what colour.
Keep up the good work
Marc
mscabrio ·
Color is still undecided. I have been appointed as the creative genius behind this project while Rod is the technical officer / dogs body. I am quite keen on mint green, but have to admit my attention was caught by the new aqua blue on the Holden Commodores.
What I do know is that the interior will be a beige / cream color. Would love to trim the seats in leather, however don't think that budget will allow for that
For update, last night we picked up a smashing set of popouts and a Petri steering wheel
nbturbo ·
It won't matter what colour you choose-it's an Oval-enough said.

thanks... i think it looks much better in black.. and the powdercoat came up nice...
as mscabrio said we are a lilttle undecided on colour... can't decide on a late model colour from any car maker or whether to go to some original colour.
we also cant decide on the stainless trim. at present it has none... but dont know if we want to put it all back on.
decisions.......:o

My father used to own this car, Its come a long way since then. Not to mention the distance it has gone and how many owners it has had.
I wish dad still kept it, such a cool little car.
cheers steve
mscabrio ·
Thats cool ! Andy did tell us that someone from the forum had a history with this car. Do you know much about it?
It is a great little car and we can't wait for it to be all fixed and shiny and back on the roadnn[ Edited on 7-9-2005 by mscabrio ]
blutopless2 ·
well finally got the king pin bushes reamed today. new king pins, link pin bushes, link pins and shims etc etc... all assembled, greased up and ready to go back onto car..
also had the fuel tank adaptor plate welded on to fit the new fuel sender. Tank has to be sandblasted in the morning for powdercoating, also sandblasting the steering arms as the paint is flaking, will also get them powdercoated before fitting the new tie rod ends.
blutopless2 ·
engine bay wiring is complete. firewall now back in and all tinware on the motor. motor will be going in tomorrow. will get some pics.
blutopless2 ·
latest updates....
the engine is now in and wired up.
blutopless2 ·
front hubs are back in after new king/link pins installed.
new front brake lines are in.
blutopless2 ·
new steering coupling fitted.
blutopless2 ·
new exhaust system fitted including new heat exchangers.
blutopless2 ·
tomorrow at work i will fit the new tie rod ends to the steering arms and install and set up the new fuel sender into the tank.
today is too nice to work on it so we are off for a cruise.. topless of course! :thumb
blutopless2 ·
tie rod ends on and fuel sender now mounted into tank and calibrated to the gauge.
Just have to fit it all back in the car. 👍
blutopless2 ·
ok..latest update....
have put EVERYTHING back into the car... all wired up and working.. new alternator working beautifully... got the engine running after a little stuffing around... could turn her over but no go... thought that coz i had removed the fuel tank that of course it would take a while to suck the fuel into the carby etc... so cranking cranking... hmmm.. could smell the fuel by now... so plenty going into engine... oh THAT wire!!! haha... forgot to put the negative wire on the coil.... Do'h!!!!! cranked over and she fired up.. running really rough so its off to get her tuned properly on tuesday.
Fuel gauge works well and all electrics are working *sigh of relief*.
new ride height is good too, good guess on the rear torsion bar setting.
am glad its over for the time being... till Feb anyway... then start the full rebuild. :o
VWFOOL ·
love ovals that colour, reminds me of how mine used to be. good work, look forward to more pics
blutopless2 ·
wont be that colour for too long... planning a full rework in feb next year, new paint, new interior etc... wanna change some things on the engine... fun fun fun.. 👍
mscabrio ·
I don't think that the neighbours are too impressed that she has been fired up again! Could hear you revving her 5 streets away!!!!!!!!
The neighbours hate us enough without this ! hehehehehe
blutopless2 ·
hehehe... ahhh F&%! em.... so they hate us... at least now they have one more reason to do so.... cant wait till i fire her up at 630 in the mornings for work... HAHAHAHAHA... and even better at 530 when i start at 6am... MWAHAHAHAHA
besides.. i had to rev her and clear out the cobwebs!! hehehe.
blutopless2 ·
well the oval is off to be tuned and a few minor things fixed up. should have it back tomorrow.
Fossil ·
You haven't wasted time and looking good
blutopless2 ·
lol... thanks... plenty more to do but dont have the time at the moment... will be working too much from now till mid/late december so lello will stay as is till around jan/feb... then its time for a paint job and new interior (mscabrio wants leather), some more mods to the engine (a new one if budget allows) mags are almost here and then she'll be sweet.
blutopless2 ·
well we picked her up last night after her tune up.. running much better now and sounds great with the new exhaust.. 👍
blutopless2 ·
picked up some goodies at the swap meet... chrome finger gaurds, some bits for the heater system and some polished Empi 5's. Cant wait to put them on.
blutopless2 ·
latest update....
have had the front shocks replaced, steering box tightened up and centralised, wheel alignment done, pedal assembly fixed up, new clutch tube and cable and tinware on the rear of the motor installed.
now i just have to source some whitewall tyres for the empi 5's and put em on.
blutopless2 ·
well its been a while... so here is another update...
tyres are being fitted to empi 5's on friday, new door handles and engine lid lock on order. fitting all internal door handles and window winders with new pins.

blutopless2 ·
with fingers crossed i am hoping to have her ready for picnic at hanging rock this weekend... but definitely for kennett river!
oval TOFU ·
That looks well sweet! Now for the slam job....
What tyres/whitewalls you running?
blutopless2 ·
nah... i like the stance it has... for the moment anyway lol besides it has to pass rwc first... then i'm thinking of fitting air suspension when she's off to be repainted.
tyres are a 165/15 with 3/4" band
oval TOFU ·
fair nuf..
are they 'real' whitewalls or is the band painted on? -brand?
PrettyBlueBug ·
Looks so nice!! What colour will Lello be?
blutopless2 ·
they are "real" whitewalls... not cut and painted on... will check what the brand is...
got them from antique tyres.
not sure of the colour yet laura... have our eye on a few from falcon or commodore.
BUGBOY ·
Time to put it on it`s belly after RWC Rod.
Looks good mate, so you`ll just have to keep Tracey out of it now!:thumb.
Is your body work cut to fit the heater boxes?
or did you fit them after the motor was installed.
Iv`e seen a few ovals where they cut the body work, not a big fan of this method but I guess most people believe you don`t really see it.
Fossil ·
Thats sweet looking - :kiss

thanks!... Trace hasn't driven it yet... but she's itchin for a drive!! lol
i didn't have to do anything to the bodywork to fit the heater boxes.. they fit right in.. so i dont know if there has been body modification previously... when i got it there were no heater boxes on it just the j tubes... all i have to do is connect up the heater outlet to the body tube and install some new control cables...
steve-89 ·
holy crud biscuit, that looks so cool. i want her back.
i love that car i told dad that it had plenty of potencial.
keep the good work and show us some more piccys.
steve
mscabrio ·
Hehehehehe Not a chance Steve! We love her to bits! Although she is not looking as pretty as she should be just yet she is running beautifully. Rod picked it up from the mechanic after having a little bit of heart surgery on the weekend and I couldn't keep up with him in my bug, it goes like a rocket!
Soon, she will be changing clothes .........
blutopless2 ·
got the RWC done today.... off to Vicroads on monday for registration.
oval TOFU ·
can't wait!
blutopless2 ·

blutopless2 ·

[ Edited on 13-2-06 by blutopless2 ]

mscabrio ·
I didn't really GET the plates ????? But now that I see them on her I think that they are quite funny. Damn slow my eye, that thing gave a few young fellas in their conformadore a run for their money this afternoon!!
Congratulations Rod, it is awesome to see her finally registered! Can't wait for the rest of the resto ! :kiss
mscabrio ·
Rod, I know that you were really stoked to have Lello on the road (legally ... hehehehehe), but surely you didn't need to take her picture in a half painted garage ??????
blutopless2 ·

Luv it-with that shadow on the side of the car-has some body got a gig doing a cover of the Village Peoples YMCA?
mscabrio ·
Thats what ya get for trying to take arty farty pics !
nbturbo ·
The reason I asked if it came from SA-I remember an article in an early '90's Australian VW Power mag about a 56 with a grafted in sunroof-and I don't know why-but I think it maybe your car.I dug out the mag,but it's hard to tell because it still has the side strips and later tail lights. It had "ITSA.56" rego plates.Maybe somebody from Sth Aus can help.If it is the one-it won plenty of trophy's here as well as interstate.
blutopless2 ·
not sure coz i understand it to be a 57 not 56
blutopless2 ·
nbturbo wrote:Luv it-with that shadow on the side of the car-has some body got a gig doing a cover of the Village Peoples YMCA?

blutopless2 ·

blutopless2 ·
have started fixing up the semaphores to run on 12volt and have flashing lamps... pics are posted in tech section... will update when they are back on the car.
blutopless2 ·
have now changed the indicators... didn't like the ones mounted in the air vents under the rear window so took them out. Ones in the headlights aren't bright enough at night with the headlights on so have disconnected them too. Now i have harley davidson indicators on the bumper rails.
Have progressed the semaphores and will soon be back on the car.
