Hi

If you not using Mozilla Firefox for your browser you should give it a try, it has a shortcut bar and a tab feature which is really cool.

Well if you've got a Mac, you need Safari (all round better windows) and Firefox is definately a welcome break from IE for PC users, I now only use IE for Microshite specific stuff, like Remote Access these days. Defo worth the download, less crap and more realiable than IE under XP.

Avant is also a good browser.........

so does safari.

Yup, Firefox is great 🙂 I've been using it for ages now!

i used firefox for a while but it seemed 2 take FOREVER to open up (prolly coz im running an old old imac), so i switched back to safari, but for a strange reason i cant get onto the teachers credit union site with safari...it downloads some crazy quicktime file...so for teachers credit union i use internet explorer 🙂

barls ·

st george has the same problem. the other one that gets me is when i load any yellowpages sites it tells me i have an unsupported borwser and that i need to download internet explorer or netscape

Hi

I was using it ages ago, then when I reinstalled XP it wouldnt work, it was like the computer was off line, I found my firewall was blocking it all of a sudden. Firefox wont work on the Westpac site.

Teacher's credit union should work with Safari, I use it. Are you OSX or OS 9? The other issue with some sites is down to crap programming of the 'home page'. They write (or not) a 'browser sniffer' javascript to attempt to determine what they think you are useing and what OS/Platform. So sometimes they get it wrong and it frustrates.

It's a legacy issue, in the 'old days' - pre 1998ish, the browser wars raged, and thinks worked differently under IE and Netscape, and again different on mac vs PC, so people attempted to compensate by sniffing your browser on the way in to divert you to the right spot.

Now with personal firewalls and ISP firewalls and OS firewalls, these things often don't work, but programmers are lazy and like to leech code from other places that they 'think' are clever, without proper testing.

Highly recommend Zone Alarm as a firewall for broadband users under XP, it's a right pain when first installed as it stops just about all net activity, until you say 'yes' thats fine a few times and it learns to let you use your stuff, but is worth the initial hassles long term.

Zone Alarm and Firefox are a great combo for XP broadband users, makes your machine far less prone to things crapping themselves.

Zone Alarm is a real eye opener, it's amazing what you PC trys to send data too and from that you had no idea of.

Banks are all about 'risk' and are in cohoots with Microshite, so they want you to use IE else they won't 'guarantee' it will work, they would have to actually spend money to support other browsers and wont basically.

Anyone used the ATOs online BAS software, that's a real mind-melt, talk about fussy, it only works on limited editions of IE, does not like any patches you might have got and in my case I ended up having to install an out of date version of Netscape to get the damn thing to work. Dunno what moron specified that project, a real dumb idea.

Anyway.......go the anti-microsoft.....

butidontunderstand ·

im using osx, but it doesnt matter coz i can't be bothered doing anything else
GO THE MICROSOFT HATERS!!!
one of my friends just bought an ibook and she bought the microsoft office package with it! BOUGHT it!!!!! she must be crazy!!!! half of the microsoft stuff screws up when you use it on a mac anyway
boo microsoft

Starbug ·

butidontunderstand... the mac office suite is actually rather good... as in its so good that the windoze people are pissed that the mac version is superior in every way to the version running on the operating system for which it was designed!! so dont be too hard on your friend...

when it comes to most things, macintosh did it first... and when microsoft does it first macintosh does it better.

im running safari, simply because it integrates with mac OS seamlessly, but i do have firefox and occasionally run it when a website is being a bitch, or for webdesign purposes.
tabbed browsing is oldskool... i used to use opera back in the day on my old crummy pc!!

crash different...

mac kills my inner child...

I work for a Bank (one of the largest), and we struggle to maintain browser versions as each of the supported browsers has to be tested for *every* single feature and *every* single path including difficult to replicate error paths. It costs a fortune to test each supported browser.

Saying that, it's interesting as the developers use Firefox and we have to test for IE compatibility. 🙂

thanks,
Andrew

Firefox. It is fair to say its slower to boot up than IE.
I.E. for some banking sites.
I also use Mozilla thunderbird as a mail client.

do they still offer mozilla as a browser? if you are looking for something a bit more 'involved' in a browser then mozilla is your best bet...

I am in the minority that uses opera. Firefox is good but not as customisable as opera, and it doesnt have mouse gestures and it doesnt save sessions.

Macs are nice, but they aren't the be all and end all. Oh and they suck for playing games 🙂

zac_smits ·

firefox can save session..i have the session saver enabled. opera is gay. gay gay gay..

that is all

Starbug ·

yes, there is a browser just named "mozilla" and its pretty oldskool too.
its the browser they based netscape on, and firefox is a user-friendly (cut-down) version of mozilla.
mozilla has the lot... email, browser, chat, web-page composer... anything you want to do on the net...

and they still make it too (so i just answered my own question🙂)

71superbug ·

yeah i haved used firefox for ages now..excellent browser.
