Whats the usual fuel consumption rate for a '77 standard 2ltr kombi.
i think mines pretty bad although it runs well..... maybe 350km/tank (50ltr) on the highway.
cheers

sounds ok to me .
do you have the tyres pumped up to 40psi?
is the motor in good running order and in tune?
after all it is a brick on wheels not good aero.:jesus
kombikim ·
yep that is good. small motor, big vehicle, big wind resistance
azz ·
What about an auto? Does it make a difference?
Is 40 psi the ideal amount? I think mine are only at 32 psi
Bizarre ·
it will make a tiny difference
Is your fuel injected??

Was that available in 1977? Cause mine is as she was when she rolled off the line

:beerI have a 78 kombi auto with 2ltr,u have a 56ltr tank,I get 350 to a tank but I have huge jets in the carrbs. hope this helps....
crewcabconnection ·
wow, my 2.0 sucks down way way way more than that......time to go to the shop for a tune up......
ian.mezz ·
best i ever got was used 11 litres per 100ks .
:bounce:bounce
bugger ·
Time to mortage the house kiddies..... With the rising cost of fuel, it may be the only way of keeping our rides on the road.👎
mnsKmobi ·
Some simple ways to improve your fuel economy are to:
- slow down! Given the unaerodynamic nature of the kombi this makes a significant difference
- remove excess crap. If you've got a campervan there is a lot of stuff that can go.

hahaha u got it easy i have a jap r31 skyline uses $150-$200 a week and i only do about 450kms a week! time to get a nuva dub!

40 in the back and 30 in the front are the factory recommended pressures when using light truck reinforced tyres (also recommended by mr volkswagen).
Kombi Dad ·
The best that I have ever had from my '82 2l fuel injected bus is 13l/100k and that was on the Hay plains (probably with a tail wind lol)
tassupervee ·
As a matter of interest, my 1200 F-Vee uses around 450ml per 2K's around Baskerville
About 12.5 mpg.......A freakin 1200!!LOL

Yep at $1.30 a litre I think my air-cooled dubs might become more weekend cars. Because I do about 50000ks a year just for work I reckon one of those TDI VW caddy vans will be ideal. 5L per 100ks compared to 12L per 100ks.......the fuel savings alone would cover the repayments on the new caddy. MMMM ...........1100ks a tank......pity if my caddy was rear ended, I'd have to bung the engine into my bay dual cab !

My 78 Kombi Auto : best economy was 10.1 L/100km
(hope my maths ok - 28 mpg).
This was with premium , just been tuned, tyres hard,
I had put in just a little extra advance to see how good it could do so was mindfull of pinging, undulating freeway
towards coffs (easing off on hills and winding up gradually down).
- Previous Kombi was the 77 Auto with the Fuel inj
(yes it did exist)(the Delux!) and it was TERRIBLE ON fuel.
Did trip to Canberra and taking it easy got 15 MPG.
- the Skyline must get driven like my Beetle to do
that economy !, I race off at every light - behave like a
teenager - - But mine gets 300 km on $39.
ned ·
my 74 kombi gets between 18 mpg and 23 mpg depending on the season and the speed. if driven at 80kph i get closer to the 23 and if i sit on 100kph i get the 18mpg. she is an 1800 stock standard campervan with roof racks. dont understand what that all means in the litres per 100 stuff.
cheers

I get about 400 km out of 40 L in my dual cab ... but that has an EJ 22 in it not the 2L.
Grey 57 ·
The 2.4 Porsche 6 in my Ghia is getting about 15ltr per 100kms best case. Thats about 15 MPG in the old measure. Ouch Gets way worse if I start to drive it hard and have a little fun. Then I get about 160 ks outta a 30ltr tank. The price of fun hey
baybuscamperkid ·
ea81 1.8l subi engine in mine returns 10 to 12.5l/100km no matter how hard i flog it, no mater whether it is around town or freeway driving. so that means 35 to 42l for 350km but i never try more then 320km as i have no fuel guage.
Robo ·
350 kays a tank out of my 77 2ltr.
Rob...
pod ·
LOL Kombi Dad feel the same about my caravelle as well😁
bus914 ·
mine uses 11L/100km (at 110kph) on the hwy and 17.7!!! L/100km driving to work.:cussing

Dads commo v6 powered kombi gets 380 km to 50 litres, this is using a type 3 auto transmission...

This was posted last year re Kombis being a brick.
The Kombi is more aerodynamic than a Beetle. I posted the research from University /factory research some months ago.

Found it 20/10/04
I also have camper and bus and at 85-90 get around 10-12 depending on condition.
As for arerodynamics please read the following.
The idea for the Type 2 is credited to Dutch
For other uses of the word Dutch, see Dutch (disambiguation).
. Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, who drew the first sketches of the van in 1947.
Aerodynamics is a branch of fluid dynamics concerned with the study of gas flows. The solution of an aerodynamic problem normally involves calculating for various properties of the flow, such as velocity, pressure, density, and temperature, as a function of space and time. Understanding the flow pattern makes it possible to calculate or approximate the forces and moments acting on bodies in the flow. This mathematical analysis and empirical approximation form the scientific basis for heavier-than-air flight.
The aerodynamics of the first prototypes were not good but heavy optimisation took place at the wind tunnel of the Technical University of Braunschweig
. The wind tunnel work paid off, as the Type 2 was aerodynamically superior to the Beetle despite its slab-sided shape. Three years later, under the direction of Volkswagen's new CEO Heinz Nordhoff, the first production model left the factory at Wolfsburg
