Wobbly Gearstick

hey

my gearstick started to rattle, then progressed to being able to be turned, and finally can be moved to any direction in any gear.
So my question is, is this the Coupling Set, Shift Rod, that i would have to get?

Thanks

John

Sure would, but some are better than others.
I've replaced mine to find it was good for about a month.

thanks ill give it a go. is that bit where the balll goes in and bolt goes through suppose to be an open slot?

the bolt has come out so maybe itll be ok when i bolt it back on.

You better start by telling us the model and year of ya dub. Different cars/vans have different issues.
So what is the car exactly?

mmm think i fixed it, its a 69 notch. took the gear stick off and the pin that holds it in had come out. so i found it down the hole and put it all back together. think it should be ok now but still has some play. any reason why this should come out? its just held down by the spring i assume.

change all the linkages, really cheap and does a big difference

I just got the shift rod bushing done in my car... made a world of difference, used to rattle and have heaps of freeplay... now its a joy to speed up through the gears!

Is this bushing the one that seperates R from 2nd?? in a 71 bug

Umm, i have no idea... i just explained the problem to my mechanic and he said it was the shift rod bushing...

Shift rod bushing is in the tunnel just behind the gearstick. The shift plate under the stick has the reverse lock out on it. And just for the record the gearshift coupling goes between the shift rod and the gearbox under the back seat.
The coupling and the bush will give you rattles and sloppy shifting...
