VW commercial vehicles director Phil Clark says he was struck by the resemblance to the old Kombi when he saw the new car as a concept vehicle two years ago. "I saw it and thought to myself, 'That is the Kombi, that is the traditional old Kombi'," Clark says. "It is a basic people mover, does not have a pop-up roof, has a little cool box, the seats lay down, put the surfboard in the roof, bags in the side.

"We are tapping back into our heritage."
What is this guy smoking? But seriously, $50k for a clone of every jap and yank people mover I've ever seen. VW needs to take a good long hard look at themselves. This car bears absolutely no resembalance to a bay or split besides have a sliding door and 4 wheels. And the colour scheme looks crap. You could get away with weird orange 2 tone schemes in the 70's but don't try and fool us into thinking it's retro cool coz the colour scheme is crap.

Phil Clark needs a new job. He's no good at this one.

Tapping in our heritage...yeah right...he's trying to tap into yuppies back pockets.:puke

No way does it look like a kombi. Sort of like a vanagon maybe (OK OK so some people say vanagons are kombis too, I don't want to start a type 2.5 war!)

wat a crock traditional stlying bull sh@t

Twokombies ·

I love it, put some curtains in and away we go. It is not much more exy than a new ford or holden and Kombis were always priced higher tha riceburning crap

pod ·

if thats a kombi i`ll start eating my caravelle:alien

*takes off glasses, squints, stands on head, pokes one eye out...*
oh yeah...a kombi..... 🤪

rustycamper ·

Kombi's were supposed to be simple right? On what planet do you need to raise and lower the roof using "a command menu on a control board"?

I bet the command menu wont still be working in 35 years as well as my pop-top is.

Looks like what its ment to be. A comercial Van with a surfboard on top. bought as much style as a house brick!

That looks like a Tarago mated with a Mitsubishi!!!
What a crock!!

still, compared to the current Caravelle, sorry Multivan - they are ditching the old Kombi (revived in bog T4 name) and Caravelle name - so much for heritage, oh the point....the price of a T5 Caravelle is getting rediculous.

If they cut out the bullshit and just sold T5's in 'kid proof and dog proof' format, as they originally designed them and pitched them at the 35k to 45k bracket, they'd sell shed loads of 'em and send Kia back to the scrap heap from which they were spawned.

But no, don't mass sell a bus people want/afford, lets make em 60k plus....good one....what marketing moron thought of that.....let's face it by the time you've got up there in the T5 price bracket. Can get a decent T4 Caravelle and a great Bay for that money and still have money for a split project....

Marketing people....now there's a real job.

i dont see why they market it as the new kombi, surely the caddy is the real new kombi. it is based on VW's currewnt small car (having a golf driveline), is a cheap (in VW terms) basic and fairly compact van, even has a similar load capacity (in weight at least) to the kombis, surely the caddy is the TRUE new kombi?

WOW.......$105,000 camper, no backpacking hippies here....:alien

The problem is VW of America. They control most of the "great new ideas". It was their influence that made VW want to become more 'prestige' and less...dare I say it...'people's car'. Unfortunately, the damage is done, Americans want shiny, imported crap these days, not simple, dependable engineering. Sadly, Aussies don't seem to be much better....🙁

crewcabconnection ·

America? surely not. That's the land of fresh ideas and champion of the poor, (unless your one of those black potential criminals in the unseen, un-voting, un-important underclass, currently up to yer arse in water).

So does that make Kia the new Volkswagen?

Anyone interested in spending $50k to get one of these so called "kombi's" and publically burning it in the next VW meet? I will be happy enough to light the it up 4 yas.

Maybe I will be to busy puking on it instead. Hmm, i dunno. But that ain't no kombi. Looks more like a piece of elephant turd wrenched out with a shovel from a fat ass (NOTE: Nothing PHAT about this kombi though)

Soz, im just pretty pissed with it. Cause if they can't make a noice modern kombi that is going to be impressive to the vw community, I don't see much potential for the kombi as a vehicle model to last though the ages and get betta and betta. But besides my babblin', if i was choice of taking either one 'new' kombi, or one 'split classic kombi', I honestly would take the 'new' kombi, sell it off for say $40k, and get me a 'split classic kombi' and restore it up to beaut. YEAH!🤓

amazer ·

Its exactly the same as my kombi but different! I got 4 wheels too!

If you think they are expensive, ring trakka and ask them for a lwb camper. gonna be a long long time before we see any backpackers in a t4/t5

The average poster around here expects new cars to be in the same range as your korean or japanese import shitheaps.
That is the subtext I get from reading the above. Not to mention that anything new simply cannot be any good.

Fossil ·

Sorry but Bays and SPlits have a greater appeal, class and sex about them
