ebay community members warning!!

I am a regular ebay user. About three weeks ago I awoke to find I had listed $5000 worth of gear, with a listing fee in excess of $300. My account had been hijacked. These were all 1 day listings and the description said to email me at an @aol address (substitute @hotmail, @yahoo) as it will be faster. Beware of such items. I told ebay there and then, was suspended, had all items being sold cancelled, all bids retracted and left to dry for two weeks, while they investigated.
Morale of the story. Have a password that is letters numbers and #$%^& type things. Don't tell a prospective buyer (esp. from the US of A) any details address/ph number until they officially buy (think that's where the Yankee got hold of me).
To see what I mean, type into ebay a worldwide search for apple powerbook and look for purple entries in $US. Most, if not all are 1 day listings on hijacked accounts. (i figure this out as the origin of the item does not match the sellers location, and by looking at sellers history, you get to see what they usually sell.
I did not realise this was so rampant, but..........

thanks for the warning, will keep an eye out

And just to prove a point, I actually bid/bought two notebook computers from the UK only to later find ebay cancelled my bid due to the sellers account being "compromised".
Play safe folks!!

oowaaaah ouch......... taa

Had the same problem a few months back. Someone hijacked my account and changed the mailing address to New York and I was selling a 100 year anniversary harley for $28000. I even got a few bids and emails of people wanting to take a test ride. That's how we found out someone had changed all our details. Lately I've been getting warnings of account hacking which want you to reenter your credit card details or be suspended in 72 hours. I told them to piss off unless they could prove who they were. Ebay will said fraud notices to your account not your email address so be careful.

ebay accounts really should be "checked in on" regularly, they are as cunning as shithouse rats!! I wouldn't know where to start if i wanted to hack!!

buying phones is a bit dodgy too. a lot of australian sellers have listed item location overseas. And the postage charges can be quite enormous. I saw 1 phone with $32 postage. It cost me less than half that to send 14kg of crank and rods. They are advertising cheaper than retail prices but making up for it in the fine print.

Who has a cheap K750i for sale?

eGay is more interested if GayGal (theirs) is also involved. There are lots of sites out there with horror stories...such as paypalsucks.

eGay makes is money as a gate keeper, taking a % on the way past, so are happy to live with these 'not so rare' scams, and solve them if they can, if not...then they are huge and rich, and the punter is not, so you'd be kinda screwed if they told you to rack off.

They also have one of the worlds best PR companies acting for them, so it's rare to hear eBay nightmares, but they happen, all the time.

There's also a danger in that eGay's demand for your home phone or mobile number and your address is publically available if someone buys, so it's pretty common to scrape details of users for future abuse.

There's bags of negative stuff about eBay...just make sure that if you 'leave it' for a while that you change your password or cancel, and dormant accounts are targets.

And we ain't even got talking about the vast number of cyber-drop kicks and e-tossers, I mean buyers, that make scamming and ripping of sellers their hobby.

Great when it works, s h i t e when it don't......ever looked for a phone number on eGay to call someone.....

it's a volume business, with a high revolving door of users....

I've had a few of those recently as well! I just foward those to spoof@ebay.com.au ...... Wonder if they do chase those up!

bobupp ·

Believe they do, takes time, but they do.

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

i have had a couple of second chance offers to cars that were already sold luckily one of the cars happended to be in my home town so i went round and saw the owner and he said he never sent an offer to me i let ebay chase it up

Robo ·

I keep getting a request from them to change my password, it seems that one word and a single number is according to them easy to hack. Is this request fair dinkum ?
Rob...

65busser ·

No Rob. Report to ebay.

bobupp ·

NO, ebay NEVER send emails to you requesting details. If you answer this, there goes your account security!! As said ebay communicate through their message board.

egay suck

i just won a three month tussle with the gaylords over $2.65. they reconed i hadnt paid, i had sent a cheque that was cashed by them 3 days after it was sent. anyway they have finally agreed following my last fax and email as follows:

hello again.

i have checked bank statements again and i can confirm that the cheque sent to you on **-8-2005 along with a full copy of my user and account info and refaxed twice (**-9-2005 & **-10-2005), was cashed on **-8-2005.

so, as far as i am concerned you have been paid. check your records and you will see the same.

so far ebay has not impressed with its service and approach however this situation can be overcome.

i would appreciate some personal feedback regarding this advice within 48 hours (by personal feedback i do not mean yet more spam saying my account hasnt been paid; because it has)

thankyou.

haha. they responded with:

Thank you for your payment on your eBay account. We have received and posted your payment today.

Your account has now been reinstated, and is available again to use for bidding or listing activity.

Please be advised that when you incur charges on your eBay account, you will be sent an invoice by email once a month. Your invoice amount is due in full by the next invoice date of the following month. These are the payment terms that you agreed to in the eBay User Agreement. You are responsible for making payment whenever you have a balance due, even if eBay's invoice is not successfully delivered by email. You can use this link to check your account's balance due and transaction details at any time:

When you maintain your account according to these terms, your account will not be restricted due to delinquency controls.

Welcome back to the eBay User Community.

Don't buy anything off it myself. Leave that to the wife. A bloke at work has bid on about 6 laptops in the last fortnight that were all being sold from hacked accounts. He's thinking of asking eBay for a job. Also saw a hacked account selling mobile phones, complete with fake TNT shipping invoices. Only problem was that the wording in english was so bad you could tell it was a fake from that alone.

...I had so many phone calls while I was with AusPost from buyers waiting for parcels to arive...another thing again...do they really send the parcels?? Do they have really the goods?

I'd ask people for the parcel details and there were never any....ordinary parcel post...no number that can be scanned...no contact number of the seller to clarify the parcels details for the buye, if there was indeed a parcel..'I only have their email address'...'they never reply'...get a phone number and ring it..pay the $2.50 extra to have the parcel registered and get them to send you the Registered Post number

AND give them an accurate postal address for yourself

It's amazing how many idiots there are out there 🤪

I've been so lucky with the few purchases I've made on Ebay....but now I realise how many people are riped off or just plain dealing with idiots

never open ebay emails in you email account, Only in "My Ebay".
and forward all spoofs to ebay in the same section.

cash on delivery is also a good option if yuo can get them to do it
