29mm torsion bars, 26mm rear sway bar. STIFF!!
Amazer had a converted one for sale a while back, he may still have it.
when we converted my sisters early notch to late frame, we used the original late engine support cross bar and brackets welded to the body in normal location, but for rex conversion, for sure go the converted frame

How is your Subaru conversion going, I have had a look for a progress thread but couldnt find one. Any chance you have some pics you could post in a thread an talk us through the conversion.

I am so looking forward to pulling up next to a wrx powered bug and have both of us dissapear up the road in the click of your fingers. It would just spin people out!
I am going to make up a couple of dummy engines out of foam, then glass over the top of them and lend them out for fitting purposes. Bit lighter than the original.
Keep the conversions coming boys....

with the 10 and 11 inch slicks......still spins em at 160km/h (third gear) tho!!!!
then down came the rain and rubber width (7inch all round)....
don't forget your hail Mary!!....
don't be standing on the go peddle too hard, 29 p.s.i boost makes it kind of toey!!!!(you might be able to see the turnbuckles holding the intercooler on) and be wary when it gets some grip, a few second later your doing 128km/h, before changing up to third, which dissapears another couple of seconds later at 185km/h, fourth is gone in about 4 seconds when it hits 260 km/h!!
close the lid at the end of the day!, it will still start after 30 seconds cranking, a couple of years later:thumb

get those sway bars yet???

I dont know were I have been looking but this is the fist I have seen of this post !!

Gear box please tell us more ( we all need them )
The sway bar for the rear I have been using the old HR holden units .
your using 29mm torsion bars ? they are ?? good / no good ??
info please
I am going to the shed to do some more now !

i thought you were simply ignoring this one Neil😁
gearbox- i have been throwing 2L hints at you for months now- remember-berg five links, berg intermediate housing??
228mm pressure plate and 4 puck clutch-STILL SLIPS!!- but slicks and very tall first need to be taken into account. soon will run kennedy 228mm stage 3 pressure plate.
rear torsions (sway a way)carry the extra weight well. Ruby (above) runs them successfully too.
always remember WHITELINE BARS- have your bars stay stiffer longer!!!😂 KONI/bilstein-lifetime shocks!-rebuildable and adjustable!!
times????? very bloody quick!!!! looks like I'm going to make it to Warrick after all, so real times to come!!! much quicker than the beetle in my avatar -it ran 13 seconds flat.(N/A 2L).....so 11 second quaters would be expected.

But before i could install it all, i managed to crack both of the trany horns on the subframe and snap 2 of the bolts in half somehow.... So in the meantime, its parked waiting for a new subframe with a bunch of goodies.
Also, since i bought another car for the meantime (e34 bmw 5 speed), i can work on some of the bigger tasks i wanted to do to it that i wasnt able to do before because it was my daily.
You wouldnt happen to have any below pics showing the subframe would ya?

I have a plane for that ### housing I can tell you .Pauls has a box about to land then it is having babies .

seagull ·
But I have landed more WRX motors
Simon Have I got a deal for you ( ! )
hellbugged ·
those rex motors may cost $66.66, but the bullet proof gear boxes to match are worth the same as a hypo air cooled motor....................hhmmmm😉
the worlds best gears are made here in Australia and available in any size you want IVAN ALBINS.
the motor pictured is a wrx motor, not RS, with the biggest turbo able to be bolted to standard manifold.(bigger than STI).
close ratios are not need for these motors, this baby has no problems pushing any of the gears and even with the spacings as big as they are, still falls back into boost each change.
strength is what you should be after, not close ratios
ZF limo diff and moly pinion nut are all you need to add
Neil, desert moose was selling a built 2l box, it may have seemed expensive, but with all the gear inside, represented great value.

i will try to explain what each of those alloy bars purpose is.......
they all run up to the parcel rack (that has been seam welded all the way round the edges), which is sandwhiched between two heavy alluminium plates.
the top plate is tied into the cro molly cage...
the bar to the far left and the one just visible at the rear right side of the engine bay are boith tied to the top of the gear box (kombi mounting point), & practically run in a vertical position to stop upward movement and twisting of the gearbox/engine
(you can see this support bar underneath the intercooler in the first shot above)
[ Edited on 19-9-06 by dumone ]
hellbugged ·
the plate underneath the fuel reg has two purposes.
1 is to hold against vertical/lifting movement at the rear of the engine
it is bolted to the motor, next to the alternator, like so....
2nd job is at the botom of the plate, there are also two more alloy rods. one runs in either direction to stop sideways loads at the rear of the engine. they are mounted to the body near the rear bumper mounts
there is also one bar that runs directly between the two bumper points- works like a strut brace to prevent both stretching and collapsing of the body
the radiator you can see there is for the intercooler only, and is pumped via a stand alone electric water pump, it has its own little thermo too. liberty water to air intercooler.
you can see a T-piece into the main radiator line- this is the return for the water from the turbo. it previously ran to the coolant resivoir-strangely enough, they were melting:thumb

the cradle ties into the bottom of the gearbox/engine solid too...just see in the bottom left of photo. when you run a kombi box, you also get the benefit of kombi C.V joints and axles:kiss
rubber mounts of subframe are long gone.....
can you say "adjustable"????? rear swaybars, at 26mm, are bigger than most peoples torsion bars🤪

its a pity i took all these piccies early today.
we had towed it a couple of 100 km to go racing last weekend- in the pouring rain. needless to say, it was postponed, but the engine got saturated.
when we started it, it had a miss fire, and needed to come up to full temp, which won't happen at idle.....
what to do???? we don't have a race track, the local country road would be awsome, but we both need our licencses..............that paddock looks fairly smooth, there are no cows near it..............swshhhh, whistle brrmmmm, the rooster tails looked classic!!!........and even tho we stayed in first, the ground felt a lot rougher at 80km/h that split second after the throttle was opened, BIG diagonal drifts thanx to the limo difff😏

Hmm, i might try and build up off of a IRS subframe this time instead of converting a swingaxle one. It leaves more room for CV's. I bet those alloy rods work 100x better than an old fashioned traction bar too.
Theres so much i still need to do, it always seems like car projects are never ending.

the tops of the frame horns can be flattened to allow for the c.v joints
bracing the frame horns up to the body will achieve wonders
if we had the choice, ours would have been done that way, it was purchased roughed up before it was extensively changed to what it is now.
will get some front end detail pics soon

underneath the tank is the first fuel pump...
the steering is equipped with a quick steer block. one turn of the steering wheel takes it from one lock to the other
adjustable coil over konis
the front wheel spacers are rather large too. adjustable sway bar measures 24mm and attaches to the upper trailing arm. front discs are type 3 with matching calipers.

Can i leave my engine & box rubber mounted with no bracing, just 2 engine mounts and only the mounts at the front on my gear box (no horns)?
my 3 has the suby engine for years with out anything falling off or breaking but no turbo. now its turbo but not in yet.
hellbugged ·
well it's been a while, but i've finally got down the "must do" list far enough to begin repairing the race car......
last run was at Warrick '06 with dissapointing results because of lack of traction and then a fried clutch via attempting to do burnouts with 10 inch slicks strapped on the back 🤪...........(that was the call from the boss when i rang him informing him of the dissapointing traction and cosequent ET's)........
the 228mm, 4 puc clutch had lasted 4 years, but always suffered from slip due to the combination of a tall first gear, shirtloads of grip , but standard kombi pressure plate.....i'm sure it must be the only weak link left in there❗.......CURE?..........replace it with the biggest K.E.P pressure plate we could get and a new 4 pucka!
maybe it's taken the most part of 18 months to look this monster in the eye and work out where to start, but finally i have...............if man put it in there, man can get it out!
for all who complain about and delay pulling their aircooled motors from their cars (myself included).............try and get your head around this...............layers and layers and LAYERS!!!! of "must removes"..........
i can tell you there is H20 lines (separate intercooler and radiator circuits), vacumn hoses a plenty, fuel lines...........
BUT..........my personal faviourites are ELECTRICAL connectors..............injectors, sensors, solinoids they're everywhere 🥲!
there are several items that can keep the motivation up though.............anything to do with BOOST❗..........intake hoses, intercoolers, haltech controlled solenoids,
hellbugged ·
a while later, i had green coolant everywhere (even some in the catch tray😂).........the water/air intercooler , it's pump and radiator were out............electrical connections (as a guess at least 20) dissconnected and labelled CAREFULLY!...........main engine coolant pipes removed and intake pipes removed from both sides of the turbo (remember me mentioning HEAT!😬)
just the exhaust and fuel lines to go...........a nice way to kill off 6 or so hours!.................but hey, whos complaining, after bug-in, i'm, itching for some more track time and plan to do as much as possible before the...

trailer plugs would be a nice addition, but it won't be me cuting into those looms🙅
..... the bench full of removed bits and pieces.....
........job done!
"why did i get this job❗..".......... oh that's right, i fried the clutch 😁
flywheel will be removed and "ground"..........to remove hardened hot spots and uneven surface.
we estimated the standard 228mm pressure plate and clutch had done only two hours work🤪.........but that's solid HARD work! (several years of racing)........very sticky tyres, tall 1st gear, shirt loads of torque + horsepower and not enough clamp force, combined with a total lack of mechanical sympathy........results in a little bit of heat 😂 📝
undoubtedly the replacement will last much longer........
clamp force will be over three times as much on previous set up...........
that's life in the hellfast lane 👍
hellbugged ·
just undo the six bolts and off the flywheel comes........no 8 dowels and interferance fits and pullers to contend with 🙅
i'm starting to dig this subie stuff!
flywheel has survived the ordeal ok and resurfacing will be fine
took some measurments of the new clutch and pressure plate to compare to the old set up..........flywheel will be ground to provide maximum clamp force by adjusting pressure plate height relative to the clutch plate surface
1303Steve ·
Kennedy make nice stuff, I just got my G50 stuff today from them. So you were running a stock 228 pressure plate with the puk clutch?
Steve
hellbugged ·
the puck clutch injested so much heat it is warped very badly and has a build up of metal that came off the pressure plate on the pads. closer inspection of the pressure plate sees gourges 5mm deep!..... we knew it would need replacement and just tried to get it down the track for the spectacle🙄..........i'm very suprised the flywheel has survived
i'm looking for the dyno sheets for the motor.......new set up is good for up to 500H.P so should be A.O.K
nice to meet you at Oran Park by the way
1303Steve ·
Nice to talk to you as well. I'm hoping for about 260 - 280 hp at the wheels, 500 should be insane.
Steve
hellbugged ·
.... engine currently makes 260hp at the wheels and will stay at that for the moment.........
pete wood ·
BTW, love those EFI ida manifolds on the bench there. must be time to install them on something don't you think? 😉 [pete the broken record] 😁
hellbugged ·
got the flywheel done. looks heaps better! you may be able to see the swirl pattern from the grinding. checkout the operational surface area provided by the 228mm surface🤘
you can see the lip near the ring gear (pressure plate seat)
is also ground to keep the height correct.
further more to the plate seat being ground the matching amount, it had more taken to account for the thinner pads on the new clutch (opposed to standard plate) and also extra to lower the plate down onto the clutch to get even more "clamp".........
with the pressure plate sitting "relaxed" you can see the fingers of the diaphram rising up to the center........
now with the plate bolted down, the fingers should still be ever so slightly higher in the middle compared to their outer diameter mounting points..............this is a great indicator that the pressure plate installed height is good ... maximum clamping force with minimum pedal pressure🥷
hellbugged ·
with the flywheel refitted and new clutch in place, the motor was ready to go back in. the bellhousing was cleaned up, necessary's greased (throw out bearing pivots, guide etc) and new thrust bearing (german) installed.
the standard liberty pipe from turbo to intercooler was long since blown apart, repaired track side, but never replaced. there was no way i could leave it. so a few options were sorted, as it's nice to arrive at race meets far from home with spares at hand...........
to avoid reinventing the wheel at this point, it has gone back together as it was previosly run. the samco model specific hose (wrx) will allow the use of standard recirulatory style blow off valve.
in the future, we have the option of going to a aftermarket BOV which can be plumbed into either the stainless "up" pipe or the one from the intercooler to T.B
so here is where i'm at now..............note the "workshop manual" taped to the back window😂 a picture says a thousand words❗............and people wonder why i do boring threads with too many pictures, but for sure they come in mighty handy🤓
the hands on experience has been great. i now understand all of the engines components and have spotted some room for small improvements with routing of fuel lines etc.............might even consider doing a subie conversion for myself down the track

soo basically it all went back together fine. a couple of re arangments because of the new pipes, but nothing spectacular
went to start it and no fuel pressure at the engine. so the process of elimination lead us to the primary efi fuel pump which was seized probably due to "gumming" of residue fuel after the last run..........anyways got that sorted (not easy) and so it was time to fire up.
the engine sounds quite nasty on the warm up fuel curve from the computer, as soon as the temp reaches 50' it changes completely.
anyways, try this link for a video as i do the run around looking for leaks and noises having just got it fired up for the first time in 18 months.................damn sound has got me amped now i'm pretty chuffed with the results!

well, after the fireball at Raleigh the engine damage was quickly repaired and engine fired up......all sweet.
the supersprint date had been set and we wanted this car there in an attempt to "proove" it's worth as one very fast VW.
a month out i loaded it onto the trailer and successfully set a date with the panel shop to have the rear end repaired and colour shot over the cacky green and purple......all good at a very nice price and low priority job as a consequence........the turbo was spooling up getting it up the ramps, all seemed good.
the trailer was taken to the sparkies to have the lights and electric brakes fixed up and my "ol man" was slowly coming around to the idea that he WAS the nominated tow vehicle owner/driver
with 13 days left to our departure date, a visit to the shop revealed one untouched notch, no probs still time, i decided to keep things moving and finished removing bumpers, tail lights and the rear window, then grabbing the sander and roughing up the paint and ridding all the flakey burnt bog and crap over the next two days........then back to work till the Friday one week before Wakefield meet.
a visit to the shop on the Friday again revealed one untouched notch .....and worse still i wouldn't be able to access it over the weekend to get anything else done
go to plan B
a couple of phone calls later and a rescue team was on the way to reclaim the car and a deal struck on the phone Saturday morning to have a friend over see panel work proceedings during the next few days to have the car ready for re assembly and a test session by the Wednesday before the supersprints......HA HA!
the ever growing team made it to the remote secret rebuild location whilst i continued work Saturday morning (well someone had to pay for all this!).........upon arrival mid afternoon, with no expectations for progress on the rear quater..........i was greeted by my smirking cousin and this scene..........the car kinda looked a bit "blanker" than usual as i approached it from afar🤪
it would seem some confusion had reigned in my absence as to how much was to be painted and what was to be a quick lick of paint on the rear was now somewhat of a larger project!!..........Lukes laughter that he had been the one to authorise a total respray was probably the equivelent to my dumbfoundedness over the situation with just 7 days till the start flag dropped over 700kms away from us..........apparantly my mate had picked over the crappy paint and decided we may as well respray the whole thing😍
so that was Saturday afternoon so i removed the last two windows and went back to work........a late night visit revealed that the holes from chrome strips been taken care of and most of the small dents filled ready for sanding the next day..........the plan was one bog, one high fill undercoat, one sand and one paint session.......
Sunday afternoon, the bog work was finished (well it's rough but we all understood the body is just a mule for what lurks beneath).........and a decision on paint colour had been made as we masked it up...
"red or blue"....
"not red........blue like that bucket"
"that's too dark, it's not straight enough"
"blue like that trolley"......
"yeah, that reminds me of Falcon GT tru blu.......sort of similar shaped cars, bit square, bit round"
"sounds patriotic, Jeff will like that, it'll do"
"ok, i'll order it Monday, you pick it up and we'll paint Tuesday"
Jeff still hadn't been told we were painting his whole car, nor what colour😂
goodbye gay green 🤘
it was Sunday evening when we shot it with a guide coat..we were enjoying the sunshine and out doors.....but that was about to change😠
sooooooooo Monday i had to stop at the local sign writers with cams manual in hand to organise racing numbers and battery triangle etc.....and did the 2hour trip to pick up the paint in my luch break that "the overseer" had ordered before rushing off to Newcastle to dyno his 9 second drag car (that's why he needed the $$ and was willing to work on the weekend)......back to work till 6PM for me then return to commence hand sanding the high fill coat..........."no need to take off every square mm of the guide coat" were the instructions..........we'll with no finger prints left on my hands and a couple of red bulls later.......i had done just that, finishing up at midnight.
even worse was that the wind was now howling and rain a certainty on Tuesday.......PAINT DAY😬
yeah well Tuesady was WINDY and WET, but there were breaks in it and i pushed on, the snow ball effect was happening and more parts were being prepped for paint between work shifts and a temporary booth was sorted........
"the oversee-er" arrived back on a high after lunch with his 125HP shot of nitrous giving his car instant boost and 480HP on tap when the trans brake was released........he had decided the 600KG car might need wheelie bars after all🤪.......he went for it, saying again that getting ALL the guide coat off was madness........we were pushing each other now🤓........the car was painted, looked great and the Wednesday would be spent on re-asembly YAY!!
THEN TUESDAY NIGHT.........it REALLY started to rain, wind everything!.........the ol faithfull booth LEAKED for the first time........wet paint got, well WET 😬
so Wednesday (again between work shifts) against any desires of mine whatsoever, as i swore my last ever sanding was finished Monday........ the whole car was colour sanded by, you guessed it........my hands.......which were now beyond lack of finger prints, and bleeding 🥲
Wednesday evening, it was resprayed while i went to work.......and even tho the weather was conituing to worsen, it somehow stayed dry....pheww
so that night i went and grabbed some parts to touch up at home while the paint cured and i was tired of being wet and cold anyhow.........we were now facing the serious possability of being flooded in 🙅
couple of more red bulls and these were masked up and painted in the garage at midnight........
while they dried, the missus helped cover the headlight glasses to comply with cams, and they were pieced back together just before bed time.........Thursday was already here before we hit the sack, so it really was do or die time❗
Thursday morning greeted me, wet, windy and cold........on the way to work just before 7am, the last strand on the freying clutch cable of my beetle let go.......i was gutted and rang my dad and told him to flip a coin right then and there........wether we went to the supersprint or not rested on the result......how many signs did i need that it just wasn't ment to happen🤘
well, after my shift, i changed that cable in 35 minutes flat and headed out to the notch, a plan in my head and parts for it strewen throughout my car, sheds and home........the session went well, removing the masking for the first time got the excitment happening........more red bull......... the rivets and washers i guessed the size of were right and to my surprise the perspex windows went in without craking.....
the bumpers went back in their place (although the rear ones battled because of the engine stabilisers being mounted there).......... and that was all i had time for......grabbed the trailer and started the car as the heavens opened up good and proper.......what happened next was madness.......the car was spinning the tyres trying to get it on the trailer and in the back of my mind i wondered quietly why it didn't boost up and slam the new body work fair into the side of the trailer......sadly the rush had tasken over and i didn't think too long or hard about it, i was soaked to the core and didin't have a minute to spare to get to work
the chevy only just managed to get the trailer out of the driveway..........and a team of us were now running seperate pieces to get organised.
Jeff was 4WD tractoring the slicks and spare accross his now flooded driveway on the other side of the valley.........so he could rendevous with us all in Nambucca where i could conitnue working on piecing the car back together and load the necessities in together while everyone slept .
Mark was loading my beetle onto the tilt tray to get it into town for me so i could get home that night
my father was en route to take the trailer off the chevy when i made it to work so he could match the wiring to his tow vehicle that afternoon before dark and add some more clearence lights to the aging float
somehow it all came together, the passengers seat still there from the VW spectacular was removed and every vacant inch of the race car was loaded with race suits, helmets, tyres, spares, tools, jacks.........and strangely Jeff had delivered a set of "cut" slicks even tho the car was already on "wets"...........perhaps the farmer had taken more of an interest in the the wether forecast than someone who had been stuck under a race car all week.......
well it was on the trailer and packed..........nothing else was, but the car was ready bar the stuff that still wasn't put back on yet (well we thought so🤪).....Thursday night 11PM
then things went down hill, i knew i was possesed, but unbeknowns at this stage, the car was too..............😘

still the weather worsened Thrusday night while i slept (oops).......i didn't have enough red bull to keep myself awake long enough to pack my bags, but i did have the forsight to put my cams licence and paperwork in the race car (if i didn't have anything else i would be able to race still ) AND set the alarm.......
well, it really was flooding and the alarm never went off due to a blackout........i awoke an hour late and again asked dad to make the "yo or no" decision for me when i phoned him to confess that i was late and still not organised.........not his favourite trait of mine 😊
we did get away tho after the missus helped pack my bags and the rain and wind belted us all the way down to Sydney...........and then Golburn........i can honestly say the wipers were not turned off once during the entire trip.
Saturday morning we had a lazy start.......it was still wet and cold..... the list of things to do made weeks before was shrinking, but still long.
arrived at the track after stopping at the big sheep for some suitable 98 octane fuel and got the car off the trailer and into a nice dry pit lane shed...........and the gear unloaded from every nook and cranny
headlights went in, tailights back on (with the only reference to which wire where being a picture on my phone), dad put the wipers back on........Zane dried the car off so we could put the numbers and battery triangles on.......then he changed the harness to one that was "in date"..........coolant and intercooler liquid was topped up oil level checked and we headed for scruitineering........despite the tyres being on the wrong direction and lack of tow hook markers (i had bought some off ebay that didn't arrive in time).
man the car was running rough, but it does that some times and a quick squirt always did the trick in the past
well we copied the size of tow triangles off Boris' car in the scruitineering shed and put the wing mirror back on just in time............
the sighting laps and my first session came and went without me while we swapped tyres around and bled the brakes.........Zane fabricted a cushion for himself in the meantime and suited up and strapped himself in while we mounted the transponder on the roll cage........the door slammed shut and he headed for the dummy grid just after his group was called..........he didn't make it🙅
.........so again i hauled the car hurriedly back to the pits to mount the front splitter on and correct tyre pressures...........finally we were truely ready YAY!!
well, the anticipation of that first rush when the thing hits boost was eating me alive.............it's no relaxing drive in the wet and i was wondering if i would be brave enough to even get into the noise in third gear..........
Steve Carter sent me off from the start line and i flattend it waiting for the tyre spin of 260HP with no grip..................NOTHING, NOTHINg.........and still nothing.........i knew instantly it was lack of boost and didn't complete the lap.
opened the boot and started with the simple things......blow off valve signal vacumn line was split........too easy...........blat round the pits......still no boost
look deeper........ map sensor ok, wastegate not stuck, exhaust not leaking........
pull aircleaner pipe off the try and look in the turbo......no chance.......stick fingers in there, ouch HOT!!!........bite the bullet, it's hot, but it's also siezed 🙅........it moves a bit, then stops, then a bit then siezes..........the all of a sudden it spins freely.........Luke was there helping and tells a tale of their off road buggy having a drop of weld doing the same thing then dislodgining and the thing survived............could i be that lucky?
Sides wanders past and asks where the dislodged piece will end up?............i replyed "who cares"........and i ment it
re-assemble and off to the grid..........foot flat to the floor NOTHING😬...........it's stuffed
game over.
👍"THATS RACING" 👍
why?, how?, when? are the questions eating at me now.
i'm as keen to find out as i was to make the super sprints.......hopefully not too long for a diagnosis.........gotta wait for the floods to go down....
because the car is still in Kempsey, 70 Km from home.........where we left it..........the highway remains flooded and i caught the train back to my missus and reality from there.
what a week !!!!!

Sorry to hear that, was looking forward to seeing it blast around the track. To me it sure looks a lot deeper blue than in the photos.............and imo much better than the green. What weight do you have that thing at now, it should be screaming? Im a touch over 1000kg and about 20hp down on your figures plus nowhere near the handling setup. Would have made some nice times.
1303Steve ·
If we awarded a hard luck trophy you would surely get it, thanks for making the effort, I'm glad you got to have a few laps in Rods car at least.
Steve
hellbugged ·
.........the one lap i did, it was handling great, i thought i was actually gonna have to pass the mini till he drove away on the back straight........
it's somewhere in the 900kg region from memory......i believe Jeff had it corner weighted
times.........well, i wanted to go there and run right along side Rudi.....next year
yeah Steve, i enjoyed my drive and the whole adventure..........apologies for the red mist descending and my brain fade resulting in me passing on the out lap in Rods car........there were plenty of hard luck stories around the paddock, i just hope it turns out to be something simple (well only a fried turbo)..........although number 3 cylinder wasn't firing, but that may well be a burnt wire from the fireball or a spat cylinder🤖.......who knows
happy to support the event this year, and in the future..........i always said i didn't go the the nationals because there was no racing anymore........so when there was, i wasn't going to miss it....... what a great format and venue!!!!........i will have the "spare" race car there next year too, just in case🙅
PLEASE lets do it again.
matberry ·
hellbugged ·
anyways going through the motions to get number three cylinder firing we swapped coil packs, plugs then decided it wasn't either........went on to find a soldered signal wire from the computer had come apart and that sorted that. still no luck with firing and went onto find a terminal in the plug on the injector had slipped back and wasn't making contact.......so with those two repaired we were firing on all 4 again, YAY!
plug showed signs that it had been firing previously (they were only installed before going to the panel beaters)....so bad luck alone was the culprit for this going aray somewhere between home and Wakefield. 🤪
.......but there wasn't boost either 🙅
so we start nutting that out and having already dove into the inlet side of the little spinner trackside, it was decided to take a look in the exhaust housing.......so we took the exhaust off first
again we couldn't see anything in the blades nor feel anything through the wastegate, but turning it back and forth we could get it free spinning again. start the engine we could hear the turbo spinning, then a fluttering noise (like a kid on a bike with something clicking on the spokes)as again whatever it was in the housing would jam in there to once again stop the turbo spinning.
now feeling confident it wasn't a oil , nor H2O delivery problem.
it was obvious now it was something in the exhaust housing......although we were quite complexed as to what it was, as compression testing showed a healthy 165PSI accross the board and as such we felt it couldn't be anything that should have been still inside the engine.
so we pulled the turbos "up" pipe to have another go at copping a feel in that housing.........so up i go like a rookie proctologist to find some gunk in there.......grabbed the air blower and forced air back through the thing from the exhaust outlet side and for the first minute nothing fell out but the familiar "whistling of the blades (allbeit in reversed direction) was quite pronounced.......then some chunks dislogged splattering me in the face and the turbo could be heard spinning it's head off........
these chunks were about the size of a little finger interesting.....
i hadn't looked back down the up pipe yet, but this is what i found.......
one very messed up and loose catalytic converter......
so the heat shields were removed and pipe sectioned to remove what was left of the converter, then wleded back up again.......😎
soooooo getting rather keen at this stage of the evening, it was decided the local test track was begging for a lap and everything thrown back together about 6pm tonite............the best reason yet for having lights in your race car 🤘
........the familiar whistle was back as i negotiated the "pit lane", i didn't have dash lights in the boost guage nor rpm counter, but did in the speedo...............set the shift light at 6000rpm and when it flashed in 3rd gear in next to no time,i new that would be my last chance to look at the speedo 🥲
.......it was well past the 90mph and fourth gear was dissapearing damn rapidly too........👍
naturally the car still has issues, when i got back to the shed safe and sound, one of the headlights was GOOOOONE........how can you bounce a car 1600 KM on a trailer then take it for a 10 minute run to have the headlight dissapear on the side of the road?
possesed i say!
hellbugged ·
amazingly none of it was broken despite the scars from a good couple of bounces on the tar......maybe my luck has finally turned.
for those who have asked me along the traps, turbo is IHI VF30......good bang for buck in the VF series before going to ball bearing, good quick spooling, to avoid lag with only slight loss on top end, great for high boost aps (the car is set to run 22psi, but problems with it cutting out with over boost now has programming to run 7 psi over the 22 when air temps etc have it making more).aside from it's prformance characteristics, choice for that turbo was partially made on the basis it was rebuildable........thankfully it didn't need it this time around
JVLRacing ·
1303Steve ·
Good read, what model motor is that. I didn't think the later models had a cat in the up pipe. I have VF 30 as well, came with the motor.
Steve
hellbugged ·
motor is 2001/'02 (i think)...........however i suspect the exhaust might have came off the previous engine........i'll tell you what tho, with the heat shield removed, those up pipes are a fairly agricultural piece of work 🙅
will you run the VF 30 or ?
jzk25 ·
1303Steve ·
I think the VF30 will do for a start. With the little things Ive done and will do it should make a bit over 200kW at the wheels, plenty for a while.
Bigger intercooler, bigger cross pipe, 3 inch exhaust, boost up a little and Autronic SM4 ECU.
Steve
hellbugged ·
thanx heaps for your knowledge........so, going by that engine is '02 as i first suspected. HALTECH ecu, so no probs with changing it. cut it up and cleaned it out with the die grinder so will do for the interim till we get all our duckies in a row againjzk25 wrote:STi's don't have a pre turbo cat, only MY01-02 WRX have it. And yes, they often end up jammed in the exhaust housing. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes the piece of cat reprofiles the turbine wheel. Any normal up pipe will bolt in it's place but if you have factory management you need to either refit the exhaust temp sensor or put a resistor across it. Aftermarket management cares not.

200KW at the wheels is plenty for sure....if you come up for the Winter break earlier in the week, we can throw a few laps down at Raleigh to get you keen on finishing yours off......very similar specs.

cool, thanx againjzk25 wrote:VF30 should make 200kw atw at around 18psi. 18psi would be considered a safe boost level for an STi engine with good intercooling.
what about on standard WRX motor, safe PSI would be?
what difference internally of STI motor and standard REX?
jzk25 ·
Daimo, 200kw atw(all 4) is no problems for a std WRX engine if tuned nicely. An STi engine has forged pistons and rods(in 2001 on) larger cams, AVCS valve control, no tumble valves, 550cc injectors, semi closed block deck and a lot of other little differences. They can handle up to 300kw atw(with shortned life obviously).
I wouldn't go over 20PSI in a std wrx engine with good intercooling. Charge cooling is a big variable when mounted in a beetle so you need to be careful of that. You would be better going up to a larger more efficient turbo in a beetle as it probably doesn't need the low end power due to no weight and the larger turbo will free the engine up and reduce the chance of detonation. Something like a TDO5 20G with 8cm exhaust housing.
1303Steve ·
I thought was you, when I get mine running eventually I might look at things that can be upgraded on the outside, that's why I bought a STI motor, it has all the good gear from the factory.
Would a TDO5 20G be a good upgrade for a 2002 STI motor?
Steve
jzk25 ·
Kando Dynamic is a good source for TDO5's.

DAMN TRAILER SAILORS!.....
first step with this thing is always the trailer, but have managed to trim through the list of things to do before an event attendance is even possible.
:locate trailer and ramps bolt on the tyre chocks 🤪
:thorough de-mulch, degrease and wash the tray
:find some decent rims to replace rusty spares and get tyres changed over
:search faulty wiring, end up soldering half of the wires in the broken loom, more at the back, re-insulate many joins of which the insulation had aged and no longer served it's purpose
:replace rear tail lenses and clean up terminals so they actually work
:solder all wires at plug end
:replace "break away" unit
:weld broken tie down points and search and locate chains
:wheel bearings and electric brake maintanance
trailers SUCK ! 🤘
..........but they do serve a purpose....
did a fuel system clean and fired it up.
up to temperature and sent a can of subaru upper engine cleaner through the engine......got it safely onto the float and now in the garage at home for those late night stints.

: sort headlights

: install new air intake pipe and subsquent re arrangement of attached ancillaries
: treat K&N air filter
: insulate tank from heat and build radiator shroud (most likely some of the longest/hardest running the car has ever done SHOULD happen at Wakefield)
: check rear brake pads and lines then bleed
: clean engine bay of all soot and crap from the fireball (FINALLY)
: condense spares boxes down to at the most 2 boxes of "well shouldn't....... but could possibly happen" essentials
: "pallet wrap" 3 sets of freshly "softened" wheels
: get away for a test and tune before even putting it on the trailer for the trip

factory air intake was cracked at turbo end.........unlean air sucked in at a massive rate= YUCK!
wasn't easy to do but factory one came out and silicon back in with out removing intake or turbo
H2o return finished up sweet and BOV recirculate line about 3 ft shorter 😎..........BOV is stuffed found seat from it in line, heat damage has us suspecting it had been leaking for a while
coolant back in and fired up!

the ideal would be for the wastegate dump to vent externally, or at least run parallel to the main pipe and blend in further away from the flange/turbo housing. This will stop the gasses "crashing".hellbugged wrote:dump on the exhaust Craig?..........looks like the dodgy style where the wastegate just flows onto a square plate in that photo. it doesn't tho, its actually quite flowing..........

It's amazing that u run run 20psi with the standard Liberty intercooler. On the Liberty forums they reckon they don't bother with anymore than 16psi as it just wasn't designed from the factory for anymore. Have u modified it?

yeah well Jak, was making 30psi all day........Jeff has said he has seen it on the guage before, today i had a few looks at it reading just that!..........i too have been told the intercooler would be too small for that level boost, with it prolly producing near the same HP with much less .........originally tuned to 20 psi, it would cut out if it overboosted, so Jeff had it re-programmed to accept more even tho it didn't often make any overboost..........maybe with all the exhaust and intake improvements it is going to make it up high in the PSI regularly now..........maybe it will go POP too 🙅
maybe a simple boost T manual control in the line will be enough to save a trip to the dyno or computer guru?
i'm going to look into the operation of the haltech waste gate solenoid a bit more too.......ideas on how to tell its working?
anyways Johnny i said it felt inconsistent on one particular corner and found the rear left lower shock bolt GONE when i got home. effectively also disconecting the sway bar on that side as well. that and some issue with fuel flow out of the tank........maybe as simple as not enough fuel to fill the in-tank surge bowl quick enough as it was getting low........or maybe some blockage there.
apart from that, motor, gearbox, cooling, handling and brakes STRONG❗

What?
I have to stop replying to u JVL. I have to drop my IQ points so far to respond, that at this rate I'll soon be in double digits.
I'll end up with a pencil stuck to my forehead just to use the keyboard & all my solids will have to be liquified so that I suck them through a straw.
If I listed my greatest acheivment as having my car in the Zoom yearly poster book, after spending over $200'000, I would take a photo of my head & use it as the stupid smily icon in all my posts.
Daimo, really looking forward to this weekend. I have saved a pic of your slicks in the lounge room, next time my family is complaining about vw's, I'm showing that to all!

You will need bigger brakes....and get good quality (race) brake fluid, then you will be able to brake a lot later into the corners with confidence.
Great work mate 😎

It my first time anywhere beside raleigh. I enjoyed racing with you its amazing how much more confident i felt coming up to the people i know rather the drivers and cars i knew nothing of....not that there were any problems with the others or their abilities....just a trust thing, thanx for the tech and moral support during the lead up and day
No its not swing axle, the red glitter buggy has been labeled the heltoy and confused me too...its certainly a crazy swing axle!
Clearly paul was going to run the times the car was capable of and he was keen to play with the suspension settings to gain more time.....but he very justifiably lost confidence in the brakes
Got some more video footage that will have your sweet as beetle in it yet to load

Just upgrade the front ones & they will be fine.
On our last run out together, when u were warming up the brakes, accelerating & braking, I could not believe how fast your car accelerated! The potential of these little engines is amazing. mates JVL Stacey and Gannon....you all know why i couldn't go without ya
.......not to mention Paul Z for the PATIENCE, knowledge support and sensible influence on the day
BRAKES
yeah Dave........guess that's the problem when you take a hillclimb car and run supersprint.........yeah spoke to Jak about it all and the 911 hubs and rotors i was supposed to deliver to Carter's are now looking quite interesting
the brake bias and performance has always been more than adequate with hillclimb requiring quick pad temp reaction and only a few applications on a run..........stopping was not the problem, just the frequency of it...........they are slotted with competition fluid and pads......sadly still not enough
car was pulling top end of third/bit of fourth gear up to the hill, back to the middle hairpin and along the back straight to the last corner..........meaning 3 apps around the "fairly fast" mark........then the big one at the end of the straight were i suspect speeds were in the region of "quite fast"area! WOW.............on board footage will confirm this if we can see the tacho..........something we both confessed to only getting the odd glimpse of on the day .........shift light "WHAT SHIFT LIGHT" .........tell tale memory on tach showed 8000rpm for us both
loads of opposite lock in ALL gears and speeds....certainly makes you feel alive
Paul jumped in the seat after my first run asking how the hell did i stop it......."it's fine" i said until i realised he really did have the pedal on the floor. they were boiling once the car was standing after each run
yeah happy it ran hard.
after loosing pedal and bleeding after each of our 2 runs (one each on old tyres and another on the gooderer ones)........we were making every second dummy grid for each of us.......decision was made to bleed whole system dry and crack a brand new fluid bottle in and through.
the new plan being to ramp up the boost and have one good lap at a great time instead of 4 to try and keep the car out there
having just finished this, Paul instiinctly kicked the rear left just as i dropped it back on the ground........it looked like the rear wheel was about to fall off ........the trailing arm bush at the pivot box was completely absent !!!!!!!
don't know which run it departed on, but the symbolic hand shake between drivers showed it was the end for 2010 VW nats supersprint for us
Paul had done a 1:12.02 during his first stint in the car on the old tyres!
but lost confidence in the brakes in his run on the good slicks after menacing the BMW for a bit (fair reaction tho)......not sure of times here, but loading vids may give an indication
i managed a 1.15 in the traffic on the first run......that was fun cutting through the field again but
and then wrestled a 1:10.76 lap out of it the second run
by the way.....we only ran 18PSI boost for the entire day and ramping it up was a "must do" on the days running notes ........
hellbugged ·
"in car" will show how much work it was to keep it on the track (well for me)........quicksteer, although unnoticed when piloting, plays a BIG part to give the driver an unfair advantage in the wrestling match 🤓
yeah sounds like a plan Jak..........now reliability engine wise, is coming together, we can move forward with the rest of the car too.
the ducting around the radiator played its part during both warming up to get off the RICH start programme............and held temps in the high 90's for the stints..........the fuel tank was much much cooler too❗
we have a big LMS engineering WAIC there.......got to do a proper breather box as the fumes were again filling the cabin until we race taped the crap out of the firewall.
Jeff is excited again and as with the usual development of a race car the trailing arm bush will be replaced with greasable bronze ones both sides. Surprisingly the arms were never gusseted on this machine (which was usual practice at hellbug).........so they will be "boxed" completely for extra stiffness and constant camber/toe before long too. as usual keeping weight in mind with this process
naturally one thing leads to another so a more stable sway bar attachment will be fabricated as well
brakes will for sure be ducted either way. through the indicator holes in the front and most likely NASCA ducts in the rear windows.........there are boxes of options in the stores for front rotors and calipers, just a matter of nutting it out
thanx again

BIG wheels have some radial slicks opposed to the old ply style ones. This should work better with the amount of camber the car is running. They bit fatter too at 265 fronts and 290 out the back......pitty they not brand new, but have enough life in them to test the theory. All the tyres are being coated with slick softening treatment "GRIP" at the moment, as per usual
New kombi master cylinder has helped feel on the pedal heaps. It's 21mm bore over the old 19. Bit of fiddling with new hard lines and lengthening of pushrod to get it in. New race fluid of course (easy task with a vacumn bleeder 😍)
Rear needed some new bearings both sides.
Back together okay....and swapped out the standard falcon line to braided teflon after this pic was taken.
....Gotroundtoit with the NACA ducts for rear brakes. Front ones come in through the now removed indicator holes.0
Got side tracked talking about how we'd rather be fitting the oxyboxer that's waiting VERY patiently.....
Charged the battery, serviced the air cleaner, primed the fuel up to pressure with the pumps, turned over till it had oil pressure with the freshly changed oil.........added the fuse to the injector relay..........AND BAMM, first go she fired back to life tonight. Pretty unbelievable really 🥷
Soooo that's the usual chasing ya tail maintainence done. Jeffs enjoying himself and making up a fresh air box to seal the aircleaner away from the engine bay and I've been tracking people down to help knock up some "elements" for the already done uprights of the rear wing.
