Now I'm not making excuses here... I have checked my fuel lines... but i drive a 1977 2ltr kombi with twin solex carbies... it seems to me all the fires ive read about were in the single carbie setup with the dodgy brass fittings???
Are they more prone to fires than the twin setup?

The brass tube inlet pipe into the twin carbies (or any solex for that matter) has a habbit of coming out of the diecast carbie tops. To rectify it is a simple task of tapping the 6mm hole with an M7 x 1 thread and screwing in modified tubes with the corresponding M7 thread if you have the necessary taps, dies and lathe. If this isn't an option, use a safety tie wire to prevent any of the tubes in the carbies AND fuel pump from parting company. If one does come out, you will have fuel pumping over a hot engine!

That can be spread to ALL fuel line connections, including fuel pump etc, and put hose clamps on all joints with tie wire as above. Also unleaded fuel kills fuel line quickly these days, so replace your fuel line regularly.
It happens equally well to dual carb motors and single.
