I just finished the rebuild of my 1800 van's topend, again.
It has a different head, and all the right pistons now.
It now has a non-negative deck clearance (big oops!) and no cracked heads.
The starter is now enthusiastic again too.
Here's the problems:
*It's hard to start.
*It doesn't like to stay running.
*It sounds like it's running on 2 cylinders on high revs and acceleration.
*It dies on acceleration before it goes 'vrooom' like a wounded lawnmower.
*There's a godawful banging sort of noise coming from the 3,4 side of the engine (which was there before the rebuild but occurred after the previous engine failure. Possibly after I messed with the carb. Don't remember).
*The brake booster is defunct but the vacuum line is intact (could be seized).
The positives:
* At low revs and steady throttle the noise is nearly nonexistent
* The engine seems to have full power (when its not trying to die)
* It's not blowing any smoke
* under steady throttle and low revs the exhaust output seems to be even.
There we go.
I know this may be a long shot but it's all i have. Could it be a vacuum leak somewhere on the lefthand carb causing the problems?
I have a few hours on the weekend to diagnose this problem. It's the decider on whether I drive it 200km or hire a car trailer.
