Hi all I was hoping that I would not have any questions for a while and be able to enjoy the rest of the forums. No such luck.
I was driving home from work this morning when the car developed a missfire. I was praying that it would get me home but as per the norm it stopped just a few k's away. It seemed like it was running out of fuel but the filter is full and there is fuel in the carby. I pumped the gas a few times and it started fine. When starting to move though it would begin to stutter and fart around and then die. Stop pump the gas and away I went again...for a few meters. Things became a little better when the hill stopped and the motor was not under so much load. However if I pushed the peddle it would start again and end up stalling. I made it home and I am supposing it is either the carb or fuel pump. Does this sound like the best bet at the moment? They have a carb kit down at Sprint Auto but the pump will cost $150 which I don't have. Will a fuel pump from any other VW bugs fit and work? There are a couple of earlier models at the local wreckers.

Doesn't sound like the fuel pump to me. Your carb could be clogged or maybe timing is out? Will it idle ok or will it stall regardless of the revs? I don't know much but someone else might...

My Beetle was just doing similar things and it was the carb... only you were lucky to get yours home!

Try the electric idle solidiod valve on the side of the carby to see if its operation
Its should go click when you turn the ignition on.

Ok OK, you don't have to ask me twice..LMAO I kill me.
I just woke up so going to go get the kit. I will be happy if it is just the carb. I like working on them. Yes I was lucky to get home, the last two K's is in back streets, still stalled about twelve times. Mind you after the night I had at work I was quite prepared to get the thing home using the starter motor :bounce

Have you tried the old bring the revs up and put your hand over top of the carbie
until the revs drop but not stopped do it a few times it will force any grit out . I have done it a few times and worked well.

The car was only just tuned a couple of weeks ago by a (ahem) pro VW mechanic so I hope it was done properly then. I rebuilt the carby in a couple of hours, unfortunatly I didn't have and two part epoxy to put over the sealed off plugs or compressed air but it seems to run now, took me a while to get it to idle 🙂 However I can still hear an intermittent missfire there. I think it may be the plug the mechanic said was crossthreaded and only half in. I will have to work on that when it gets worse
