Well we are about due for some new tyres for the Kombi but want to go a bit bigger than what we have. We are currently running 165 by 14 but want to go to 185's but also want something with a bit of grip so we can take the kombi on rough roads and the beach. Have got a price for a Nan kang light truck tyre for $95
Whay is everyone else running and if anyone has a set of 15 inch rims that they are looking to sell i may be interested

I've got 215/75R15 on the front & 31x10.5R15 on the rear. But you need to cut the rear guards to go bigger than a 9R

Terry's old Kombi with 9R's over on Moreton Island. Went pretty well except for ploughing sand with that bullbar....:P

Today I put on 4 Yokohama Y354's on my '71 microbus. I did it atTyreTech in Brisbane (149 Abbotsford Road Bowen Hills 07 3252 8022). I am so happy with the result. 🙂

Initially I was going to put on Y356 but when I saw the Yokohama Tyre's web site, I liked Y354 better for its tread pattern. Also I read an article saying it's better to avoid Y356's to put on a VW Bus (it was a personal opinion but pretty convincing, so I bought it).

You can see the sites below and compare;
Y354 http://www.yokohama.com.au/Tyres/tyre.asp?TyreId=59
Y356 http://www.yokohama.com.au/Tyres/tyre.asp?TyreId=60

And at TyreTech, they used air impact wrench to remove wheel nuts off but used a good old torque wrench by hand.
I had read " Don't let the tire folks install the lug nuts with an air wrench. They should torque them by hand if you ask nicely." (http://www.type2.com/library/tires/t2tirefq.htm) but I didn't have to ask at all and that was great to observe. 🙂

As I was taking off from the shop, I couldn't stop smiling as the difference was new and sensational. It also gives me so much a better handling feeling and it's much more quiet than the passenger car tyres I had on my bus.

If in doubt whether you have light truck tyres or passenger car tyres on your kombi, I suggest you had better check them out.

I definitely recommend Y354 and TyreTech.

Oh, I got 185/75R14C.

Wider tyre sure look nice, but too big is too harsh on the early bay's steering gear box, I think.

I had 195/75R14 on, and this 10 mm difference in width now requires much less and lighter steering wheel turning effort. It felt like at first as if I got a "power steering" on my bus. 🙂

There are some prety chunky 185/195 LT tyres around that will go nicely on your current rims (not sure on brands sorry).
If you want to go on the beach you'd be better looking at ~215/75R15's but you will be up for new rims.
Merc Rims looks OK and can be found at the wreckers OK.
Bigger tyres will certainly suit your bus :thumb

my old bus had 195/70/14 goodyear daytona's..
they were so good in the wet and dry..
dont know about the beach but..

I currently run 185X14 Wranglers on my 1982 camper. I do have a set of white spokes that I have fitted with 225X14 Cooper Dsicoverers. I havn't tried the latter yet as I am waiting for the Wranglers to wear out and may have to flare the guards when the time finally comes. Previously I have run 185X14 Dunlop Adventurers. Both the Wranglers and the Adventurers have proven excellent in the type of camping that I do. The Coopers were the only tyre that I could find that would fit the white spokes. I have been getting the camper ready for an extended trip to the Kimberleys next year. By the way I found the white spokes with worn out tyres on a bay window at Volksparts here in Bungendore.
