Has anyone added an alternator for a larger battery, to run spot lights, radios, and other power sucking add-ons ?
I am planing on leaving the generator as is,( mainly for the sake of the fan) and just putting it to the right hand side ( opposite the dizzy) and running a larger belt around it.
The last ot the alternators (1975 internal reg) was 50Amps
Yes - you can rig what you are talking but i reckon it would be heaps easier to use stock stuff.

Just convert it to a standard Alternator. Easy and it works. Why bother having both? You'd have to figure out the wiring, figure out how to mount it and figure out how to drive both the alternator and generator. A lot of trouble for not much gain I think.

Thanks guys,
That does sound a bit easier...
And I think that 50A should do the trick...

you can get the kits for about $300. includes oil filler, alternator, fan backing plates

I've got a new Bosch alternator on my 1200 bug. I have so much electricity now I can sell it! :blush

We have the 50amp in our 1,600 beetle and have bought 75amp for the beetle vert we are restoring. I saw an ad the other day for one that is 90 or 95 amps that has just been released.

Where did you get you 75 amp from and where are they selling the 90 or 95 amp . I need one for my twin cab with a 1776 and new halogen lights and big boom box.

I have seen this done on buggies, mainly because the standard vw generator doesn't work and used alternators from "normal' cars are plentiful.....
Try the wreckers for a VW Alternator.... they were on the 73 on L Beetle and 76 beetle...

I got the 75amp from CIP1 in the US. The 90 amp I saw advertised somewhere in the last couple of weeks. I will try and track it down for you.

Dumb question:
Does a 75A "load" the engine more than a 50A at normal driving? Or is there only extra load on the engine if there's lots of electrical stuff drawing a bigger current from the alternator???
EgeWorks ·
I don't think it will load the engine more than normal. It runs with bearings and fanbelt just like a normal generator.
68AutoBug ·
Yes the more current used the more the load would be.
but I don't really think it would be noticable under normal driving conditions......
The bigger alternator is a 95amp and it was advertised for US$215 from Vee Dub Parts Unlimited at www.vwparts.net
