Thanks to everyone (esp Pete) that contributed to the recent thread - EJ22 in a Splitter....
I spoke to a guy at Kennedy in California - they seem to be the main place that the yanks (I mean colonial cousins) go to. I subscribed briefly to the Yahoo Group for Subaru conversions in VWs - mostly T3 people - and a truck load of email ... anyway ...
They recommended against the idea, as the height it will sit at is a pain - even with a sump mod, and the rear clearance means chopping the body to allow for the fuel tank ... they also spoke about torque issues and a few other things ... they had customers that had tried it, but didn't really think it was as good an idea as it is for a bay or t3.
So on that basis, I've opted not to go with it at this point ... unless I can find someone in cyberland that has done it successfully and without buggering about with the engine bay...
I bit dissapointed, but then not too into the idea of taking a multi-thousand dollar punt on the idea ... so back to the drawing board ... and stuck with the 1600 I guess for now ...

fair enough, now you watch, someone will turn up with one next month and swear by it. 😂
Anyway, there's plenty of time to do that later. Just get it regoed and on the road first.
BTW, Wouldnt a 2110 have all the same torque issues if it's just as powerful?

The way i see it is, if they can get them into beetles you can get them into a Split Kombi.
I might be persuing this avenue. Though I like the idea of the EJ20T myself.

Nice one, I can see me taking you on at the lights - me in the Kombi - you in a WRX packing a 1600TP - I might finally have a chance:bounce

it can be done...I just don't want to go chopping it up and defo not interested in stuffing with the fuel tank location, as I need the room inside the cargo area....Probably a reason I can't find a good running example on the net.....but still looking....
Kennedy people did suggest a smaller Imprezza 1.6 or 1.8, a Toyota 1600 twin cam or a Nissan with a small Turbo - but then if I'm gonna do it, can't see much point in going under 100bhp for 6/7k.
I'll more than likely do it with the T3 or Microbus in the new year ... just gotta get me one, one way or the other....

An EJ 22 will fit in a Split Bus .. how do I know you ask ... well didn't they come with a 1600 engine same as beetles ? Yeah ??
Well you can fit an EJ 22 into a beetle without any cutting so therefore you would expect to fit one into a split bus without cutting.
I don't see why you would have to cut anything at all.
Ask SUBIBAJA as he hasn't cut any of his fire wall bit and the EJ 22 fits in great with one of those invert manifolds from Custom Offroad, can't you use one of these in the split bus ???
As for clearance it will sit same height as a type 4 engine and is lower at the top than a 1600 TP.

Talk to DJ mechanical he will do it. 6c industrial ave caboolture 4510 qld phone 54280122. Asked him the same question last year. Hides the radiator at the side of the engine with thermo fans.
