I have been chasing one one too ( posted elsewhere) but I dont like our chances.
Dave in Adelaide took one to the tip last week he tells me LOL.
The bay ones are different in length to the splittys so are not interchangeable.
I have a link to plans for one somewhere ill dig it up and post it for you. Perhaps if we got a couple made ? could be cheaper.

yer i had a quick squiz at it that canopy looks like what im after!! might look into seing what it would cost to make yaself
obviously the frame isnt the expensive bit its the canvas!!

or something like this but i would want mine all steel no wood i think!

kombi_kid ·

i wonder how hard it would be to mould a fibreglass one? the curve along the roofline isnt too much wonder what a fibreglass one would look like?

Id be leaning toward alloy - you can get the hoops bent easily to shape, with feet welded on and little brackets to mount flat bar (or t bar) to make the shape for canvas (or the like). would be a clean easy strong light, rust free option, would even look sweet all polished up

waltermitty ·

Yes alloy good .
Fiberglass Nah dont think so if you wanted hard look get some thin gal steel and bend it over frames. easier and better I recon,
But for me If i do it it will be canvas only. I like the look.
Cabin height might be the go or a little higher to match the full cabin rack I have.
Im still mulling over it.

Dave is it noisey? ie does it flap much? Mitchell

I am also thinking about a camping setup for the rear of my Bay double-cab. I'm curious about the canvases that are higher than the cabin; can you cruise at 100 kph without cross-bracing the frames? All the frames I've seen look very light....

Here are some miscellaneous canvas images...

72Twincab could probably answer that - his canopy has been around for years - although its box shaped he might have some piccies of it nude that could give you an idea of the strength needed!

Menangler ·

Not noisey, and doesn't flap, has seen "bump stop" on the speedo a few times too!!

modulus ·

Hi menangler,
Could you post some close-ups of the hoops when convenient?
TIA

kombi_kid ·

sweet guys sounds like there is a few ken parties on the canopy idea!!
will keep this thread going!
