Mate
also try realestate.com.au
they aren't too bad, but a lot of the real estate agents will have more houses on their own sites or in their shop window than they list there. Good for an idea of cost and what you get for your $$$$$

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

go northside, you would be lucky to get a house closeish to the city for less than $250. We are out at Albany Creek (maybe about 20kms) from the city, and we were paying $210 for a good house before we bought one. that 20kms is a real guess!!! Good luck with it.

kombi_kid ·

ok kool there is a couple around red hill kedron and the like which is ok what is the uburb of oxley like?
cheers
rhys

subibaja ·

my brother is renting his out as soon as we put the new kitchen in it

rhys.

wrote a whole book for u about oxley corinda etc...but rather than bore everyone sent it in a u2u...

family have lived in this area for over three decades...oxley is good...corinda better...and yes, agents in the area dont advert the lower priced houses...and they go pretty quick..so ask for lists to be sent...and call them each week for it if necessary.

neway u2u explains...also which agents for area are good and bad, or what their weaknesses tend to be...

cheers

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

Kedron is a nice spot, pretty close to the city. Nice old houses there that have been reno'd. But hey i am a northside girl, so i am not sure about oxley. All i know is that is where the Police Academy is......not much else. Good luck with it.

Why are you moving to brisbane?

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

because it is the place to be!
hahaha......actually i think i would rather your location byronbus........went there a couple of weeks ago, never had so many Kombi waves before in my life!

byronbus ·

Rhys lives in a pretty nice part of the world as well and there is a uni close, why would you move??? And to Brisbane? Dude, get comprehensive insurance...

Starbug ·

kombi_kid wrote:ok kool there is a couple around red hill kedron and the like which is ok
i can tell you straight off that anything under $250 in red hill is almost falling to bits (alot of the time even $275 is falling to bits)... not many houses that close to the city in good nick/with garage that close to the city (i live in paddington which is the next suburb along) if you have pets, dont even think about it... pet friendly houses in red hill almost dont exist!

if you are lucky you can find a good sized house in bardon (~6-10kms from city) for $250. they mostly have garages and alot are fenced, so pets are good🙂 its also right on the state forest, so heaps of wildlife and trees 🙂

oxley and corinda are pretty good suburbs, i have many friends that live there. nice and close to transport and shops and not too far from the city.

strangely enough, the next suburb from oxley, tennyson, has some amazingly cheap houses (right next to the million dollar mansions!!) public transport to tennyson sucks though.

the gap is always a good choice... you can get some huge rental houses for an absolute steal, and there are HEAPS of busses out there until very late. it too is right next to state forest, so lots of greenery, and its pretty pet friendly as well.

whats your mode of transport to work in the CBD going to be? that info would help alot!

buzzbug ·

Oxley is a good suburb.
I grew up there and spent 16yrs living there.
And it is only 20min from the CBD.

Lee.

beetlegirl ·

I live in kelvin grove which is definately a good suburb, however we pay $360 a week for a 3 bedder. if you look out a bit further like maybe newmarket, kedron, the gap, ferny grove (where i grew up) you will find something cheaper. Im a northside girl, there tends to be a division in this city, right where the river runs through. Strange that......

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

There is definately a bit of a northside VS southside debate in brissie. I have never lived on the southside.......don't know if i could. Don't go to the darkside Rhys!

buzzbug ·

the south side is ok

just dont live on the other side of the oxley motorway

though you could live in upper inala (forrest lake).

Lee.

koolkarmakombi ·

Go northside, so much easier to get into the city.

If you have to cross the river to get to town youre screwed.

kkk

BiX ·

I reackon southside, find one of the major transport routes and get as close to that eg railway line, or major road. But wouldn't go any further than evans road south, unlless you go way south. Also holland park sort of area is nice and also east if vry nice, norman park, camp hill, cannon hill area etc. Southside is much nicer.

Midlife crisis ·

Holland Park, Mt Gravatt and that general area are pretty nice.............also close to the busway.................Salisbury, Coopers Plains. Moorooka area not too bad and close to trains.

MikeM ·

BiX wrote:Southside is much nicer.
A game of paper scissors rock to say the Northside is better then the Southside.

You go first and tell me what you picked. paper, scissors, rock.

[ Edited on 02 November 2005 by MikeM ]

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

My what a debate we have started here, I will be on your side MikeM, northside is better.

winerot ·

i used to live at newfarm now thats a nice cosmopolitan place with the valley up the road
what about toombul nundah areas thats not far from city with good train & bus service.

Starbug ·

im a big fan of the southside... lived in west end for 4 years 😀
im now a big fan of the west-side...

looks like this thread is all about taking sides :P

if you will be bussing it, then most places in brissy have a bus going at least every hour, many every half an hour and quite a few every 15 minutes!

BiX ·

One thing with the buses is check where youa re wanting to travel, if you need to go across town eg south to west. it can be very hard, unless you want to go via the city.

bugeyedbabe ·

hmm,

honestly guys, I've lived both sides of city, and their pretty similar anyway, except that people north reckon their better positioned, and people south think they are....lol

Oxley is a good palce to live. Its next to corinda, and thing is, corinda is one of the major rail stops. rail up here is completely different to nsw, in that its pretty much on time...yes i lived in nsw too.

corinda is one of the 'express stops' so u can get home in about 20minutes...really kewl

now, corinda is nice, but in middle of a boom, so renting there for $250 can be hard...although not impossible. with oxley u have a better chance for that price range.

Both myself and friend rent for $250/260 his is three bedroom in corinda with garage and workshops...mine is 5 bedroom with garage and workshops.

When it comes to looking for a place, make sure ur ready...have all the contact details ready for ur referrees/copies of bank statement and/or wages. References from other agents is also good.

If ur references and rental histories are good, then negotiate on the price. Also of agents in the area of corinda/oxley/sherwood will do it.

Avoid Darra if u can, it still has a higher crime rate than its surrounding suburbs. Inala is the same.

If ur used to buses, then also consider mt omanney/riverhills/middlepark/jindalee. These suburbs are about 30years old, and so alot of investors are in there buying still. Also, good question to ask agents is: Is the owner planning to sell in next couple of years, and is this solely an investment. this reduces chances of u having to leave at end of lease.

Also, some agents penalise if ur more than a week late (noticed it once in the small print) and they may not mention it, so really check ur small print. Others give rebates if u direct debit or pay on time. I always direct debit, so never had ne problems.

Another thing...when looking, consider asking agents a little outside the area....they often have no idea about price, or are so busy trying to make their own area attractive to landlords, they underprice the suburbs outside their area...for example, we found by going to graceville and forestlake agents, you could pick up places in oxley and corinda for $20 less than the agents in that area.

And check that other agents dont have same house listed cheaper. Often people list their properties with a few agents, and sometimes the competitors are cheaper, up to $30/week in fact.

agents I have experienced that I know are good:
Centenary Real Estate, Jindalee (they also have lists for oxley/corinda)
Professionals, Graceville
Ray White, Graceville
Nanette Lilley, Graceville

Also, ask agents to fax the lists, because the cheaper house in their areas are often not advertised on the web. They also tend to go very quickly. This applies to most agents.

Hope all of this helps.

And yes, Im a gypsy and love to move, although last one nearly killed me..neway...i know the whole corinda/oxlet/centenary suburbs well, so if u need ne help, let me know.

Southside (oxley corinda etc tend to be considered more west)
MtGravatt
McGregor
Cannon Hill
Holland Park
They have decent transport, but its via buses, so if traffic is bad, ur caught in it. But they do have some nice houses.

For northside, some good suburbs to consider is
Clayfield - has great bus routes and train too, although tends to get pricey
Toombul - good bus routes.
Other thing is, it consists mostly of units, but there are poskets of houses in the area.

And I agree with Bix, once u know where ur working, it will amke it heaps easier...because its better to try to stay on side of river that u work. Unless u plan to always take a train. Buses and cars are often stacked in peak hour when having to cross river. Having said that, a brisbanittes idea of traffic is nothing like a sydneysiders...

Hope it helps.

oh, and for the debate on which side of the river is better, i think i can safely say

Which ever side ur living on 😂

~air fooled~ ·

everywhere is much a muchness, the best tip i can give you is rent somewhere on a minimum lease close to train or busway for a short time so when you do get a job its easy to get there. once the lease is up and you got a job sorted move to a nice area (which you would of had time to suss out) with great transport to the area where you will be working... ie- try to go against the flow of everyone incoming into the city but go outbound if you can to work... much quicker and easier..and cheaper!

YIOughta ·

The better drugs are on the northside - but the better pubs are on the southside - the rest is imaterial!

Its a 12 pub walk from the city to my place on the southside - the same distance was only an 8 pub walk on the northside - important stuff!!🤪

misskaleidoscopeeyes ·

It sounds like you have the right priorities there!

Simple when you look at it that way..........might move to the southside now hahaha

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

I am so itching to get back 2 the northside *starts jiggling in her seat*... poo to the southside, yuk yuk, my life went to shit once I crossed that river boundary,, I vote nothside.. (sorry southsiders, thor is southside, she knows my views 😉 ) southside is full of freaks...... :P

Was in newfarm for a fair chunk of uni, back before the urban clensing began, noise restrictions etc.. what a hoot, many a story to tell... *sighs* ahh the good old days... 😎

Depends on ur lifestyle and budget really, nowadays I will be opting for the nice quiet burbs *yawn*... but no further than a $30 taxi fare from the city 😉 😁

kombi_kid ·

sweet guys this is a great help and Bix that was a great suggestion aout what to do thanks heaps!!
anyway one problem for me will be that i do not have any referances and my money is drained into my volkswagen but i will make sure that i sell ome shit and get a good bank balance before i make the move!!
i like ur idea yiouta about the pub walk i might have to go southside just for those 4 extr pubs!!
and budeyedbabe thanks heaps for all your trouble its muchly appreiciated when i move up i owe ya a drink of choice at a pub of ur choice (aslong as its on the walk home ahahahahahahahaha)
thanks again guys
cheers

kittendeluxe ·

try chapel hill, kenmore, sherwood and graceville in the west. Paddington, Fortitude Valley closer to town and then tarragindi on the opp. All are pretty popular with students.

By the way let us know where you decide on after all this debate i am sure everyone would be keen to know:sandrine

kombi_kid ·
